  1. there goes a "good" online retailer on Microsoft Shuts Down Lik Sang · · Score: 1

geez just when i was about to get a mod from them, M$ had to pull off this stunt ...
I guess there aint many online ecom/retailers like lik sang =(
the rest is more of making a quick profit and offers little information like lan kwei, alot of fancy pictures and ridiculus pricing but not much of technical details =(

  2. Would you use it? on Nokia 7650 Modified to Record Video Clips · · Score: 1

Video messaging would only take off if users deem a need like SMS, but the average john doe in the west doesn't like to SMS, unlike the feverent asians which deem it like an extending and enhancing their communication languages.

I remember the japanese were using it and one of their commercials promoting their services shows this guy bowing profusely to appoligize to his girlfriend ;-)

But would the average john doe do the same for his girlfriend? Or for other matters?

The other factor would be cost, it's already prohibiting when they first launched data services over GSM/CDMA networks, now even with GPRS i doubt there would be much drop in pricing. It would be nice if telcos were to evaluate their charges for data =)

Some of my friends recommended www.netspace.com.au for their ADSL packages, worth a look, but pricing smells abit like "i resell some line down from telstra" but its quite attractive for the bandwidth caps check it out and see how ...

There's nothing to proetest about, would you go protesting to your ISP if you can't get to a pr0n site? Not very likely, unless you run that site. OT, Anything you do that doesn't coincides with the general public can get you into hot soup. So do you think that Singaporeans would choose to protest over filtering of internet access? Not very likely. The government only oppresses "trouble-makers", the few being oppressed are those whom have went out-of-line. The general public is very content with what the government is doing and has done for the last few decades and you can't compare it to those governments you mentioned.

Proxy is required by law for end-users aka dial-ups and general public, but for business consumers its not madatory and the actual responsibility of internet access control is delegated down to the company itself. As for the general public, its up to them if they want to access pr0n, the policies ISPs imposes just follows the standard rules and guidelines from IDA. In short you as a general public defaults to no pr0n, but as a business user you can get yourself out of the tranparent proxy loop ;)

This sounds great ... ermmm but how are they goning to implement that ?

Previous experience with 8xP3 cluster rendering PVM via 100bt already shows some signs of information passing problems, i guess they won't be using it for rendering then ;)

But its still interesting at what the internet could offer for them ... i think they're over zealous with the news of seti over performing hehe ...

Maybe the distrbuted net might be in the "neighbourhood" area rather then internet based hehe ...

I really hope they'll lower their prices no matter what they come up with ... but as we all know, sony was never known for being a "cheap" brand ;(

Great way to get rid of users like us whom depend on their fantastic POP cum web mail service ...

Previously yahoo was able to stop spam from coming into my mailbox, but since dog gone years i'm mail box is filled with hourly spam -_-;... and they want to charge $20 for this type of access ???

I guess users like me whom depend on yahoo for getting my mailing-lists need to find someone new to "host" my daily spew from ipsec and redhat mailing lists ;)
Its really such a waste that there would be so many users whom would be migrating over to hotmail cum outlook ... even though we detest M$

Maybe not ... why don't /. start a POP3 service for us then ? hehe

And you got to admit those email gatherers could also stoop so low as to get your email from mailing list archives ...

Is it no longer safe to be online ? lol

  10. My experience ... aka my first post on /. on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 1

I started off as a untrained (dont even have high school) IRC freak on galaxynet and after 9 months joined a local IRC/ISP, started off as a helpdesk operator and was exposed to redhat5.0 (all boxes was running either SCO or linux) and beginner WAN, with time and initiative, i progressed to larger WAN/LAN and later went for CCNA, RHCE & CCNP, i was promoted to manager level but instead choosed to leave in pursuit of my degree ...

Well all these years i found out everything is up to your initiative and the best place to learn is start from a small shop or ISP where linux is prevalent ... you would get bogged down by work but you would learn, of course there's the pay cut you've to take. Of course the other method is to join a major ISP, but the major pitfalls is in such environments what you learnt is limited and you get quickly bored of it.

I've known friends from that environment whom approached me to teach them about boxes and such and major push factors are like rigid work scope, non-departmental transferability which means low scope of internetworking on LAN/WAN.

Now I only wonder if big companies out there would accept your experiences and professional certificates instead of only pure degrees and such, while i'm stuck down under for 2 years to gain this crappy paper which doesn't teach me anything at all ...
