to eat at your desk? It's so anti-social. Just like eating in front of the TV. Jesus, I sound like my Dad. But we shouldn't bitch about life when we're all afraid to talk to each other over a meal. My next company is going to have a real break room. That's my excuse.
This reminds me of that scene in Austin Powers (Pt.1) when Scott Evil reminds his father Dr. Evil that he can easily shoot and kill Austin once and for all rather than keeping him alive.
"Scott, you just don't get it, do you?" Then he's left hanging with no explanation.
Why do people still use IIS/Microsoft-centric web technologies? It's almost if people like making things harder on themselves. They should just stick to what *they* do best: OS's, office, and video games.
Let's see... I'm brainwashed because I believe that corporations (mostly people trying to survive, let alone make a profit) that deal in IP should get protection from the law just like everyone else? What about people who steal cars? Should they get fines? Sure a car is worth a lot more than a $16 movie, but that car doesn't cost the producer anything because they've already been paid. Yet, the car theif still goes to jail. That $16 movie being distributed before a release could cost the producer and shareholders millions.
Fines aren't scary enough. The punishment is not excessive here because 1) the chance of getting caught is low when all it takes to copy a DVD is 3 minutes and a copier 2) you should know by pre-releasing a stolen work that has the potential to make millions in profit for all the shareholders (over half of Americans own stock). People's retirement and educations funds are being robbed when that happens.
Just admit it. You don't like laws. I don't like the fact that if I want to ride in the carpool lane by myself in LA, I might have to pay $370 if I'm caught. It seems a little excessive, but all I have to do to avoid it is NOT go in the carpool lane by myself. There's an easy way to avoid jail time, just don't steal.
Or they're being bribed by every corporation that is trying to keep from getting ripped off a few bucks. If piracy cost them nothing, why would they need to bribe people?
60 cents?? Hmmm... Input A only costs X so product ABCD should cost much less. Wow. Where can I go with this... Tires only cost $100, so Ford should lower the price of the new Mustang, so I don't have to steal one.
Ah, a world without contraints... or prices... scarcity, what's that?
When are they going to launch a decent start page like My Yahoo? They could probably do some really cool DHTML/javascript for RSS feeds and it would definitely get more people to use their other services.
This is getting a little off topic, but retribution, especially the death penalty, is completely rational. Ask yourself, does the punishment fit the crime? Isn't revoking a driver's license one of the appropriate punishments for drunk driving? Regardless if it is a deterrant or not, you need to send a message that the society values the priviledge of driving. Like many things, it only works if we all play be the same rules. You screw up, we're gonna take it from you. It's not going to keep that person from drinking & driving again. Only a jail cell will do that. The point is that we have many punishments that aren't just preventative, they are very appropriate.
The Death Penalty, when fairly exercised, is appropriate because it is the ultimate punishment for the ultimate crime. There is nothing barbaric about applying a severe pre-determined penalty to a heinous pre-meditated act. If we randomly applied the penalty, then that would be barbaric.
Our society must have zero tolerance for the deliberate taking of innocent life. Knowing that Timothy McVeigh is no longer part of the human race helps me sleep at night. And that makes my life better and ultimately makes me less likely to kill someone.
We need Democrats back in the White House so people outside the US can feel good about the US Gov't being representative of its people??? Since 1994, Democrats have been losing election after election, and you think they represent the consensus? Their decline might have something to do with the perception that Democrats represent bureaucracy and regulation. And of course Republicans have the corporations behind them. Both stereotypes are based partially in fact and partially in myth. Regardless of your views, too much of either stereotype becoming reality will be harmful to society and/or the environment. We've been fortunate that both parties have been keeping each other in check to a certain extent. The two party system keeps both fighting over the middle (Dems are losing at the moment). Both are full of corruption, start wars, start programs that don't solve anything, and then stick us with the bill. Even if we had conclusive evidence showing that the theory of Global warming was becoming a major problem, you trust those clowns in suits in our nation's capitol to fix it? What have they ever fixed? Doesn't fixing something eliminate the need for people who fixed it?
Life adapts. For billions of years, it has. Are we really worried that our great great grandchildren are gonna look back at us and say "only if they had acted on those computer models right away...' What? the sea level would be two feet lower? It would be 5 degrees cooler on average? (Could it get any worse then when there are no more fossil fuels left to burn?) No, they won't be saying any of that. They will be dealing with it the same way I have to deal with getting out of bed with an acing back everyday because my job requires me to sit most of the day. Why isn't back pain a global crisis? Doesn't that affect more people than those who will be affected by rising sea levels?
I'm somewhat fearful of the man upstairs, but if he/she/it didn't intend for us to dick around with Life(r), then he/she/it wouldn't have given us the means and the desire to do so, or he/she/it would have explicitly forbade us to do so. At least the God I think I know. God gave us science. For the most part, we are using it to help each other. He also gave us common sense. A blob of a hundred human cells is not a human being. If that blob can save hundreds of humans, or say give them the ability to walk, then tough luck for the blob. That blob, and the life saving benefits that come with its destruction, are both products of the talented minds God gave the human race so that we can survive.
Half of God's expiriment is getting along with each other; the other is beating nature (tsunamis, earthquakes, terrorists). Earth is kinda like God's version of Survivor. As long as we play within the rules, we'll be alright. What we need are fewer people who claim they know God's "unwritten" rules (rules with no consensus, and the ones that make no friggin sense whatsoever). One rule we do need is if anyone is caught attempting to create their own little army of super humanoids, they will be sodomized by those humanoids every 15 minutes for the rest of their lives.
You know, if you have good reason to fear the cops, you're going to be against laws to increase their powers. That's all this is. A cop could harass me and set me up if he really wanted to. He wouldn't need a patriot act to do it. He would have to be a lot more careful about how he did it.
It's the same with gun laws. An assault rifle can make a maniac deadly, but so can a pipe bomb. Laws aren't enough to prevent bad people from doing bad things.
We all lack the ability to a certain extent. But in the end, there are a lot of factors that go into making a purchase, not just the effects of advertising. People have to eat and don't always want to eat the same thing. Why is it bad that Quiznos comes out with new subs?
Companies need to innovate or else they go out of business and a lot of people have to find a new job. That's what drives advertising. I don't know why people get all pissed off about it. That's how people put the bread on the table. There are some things in life you just have to learn to accept, like bad weather, annoying people, animals smaller than my fist, that dog's incessant barking outside my window, bird shit, etc.
C'mon... what was the last product you bought that they made you want to buy? When was the last time you turned on Fox because someone told you that you want to see it?
Give me a break. Yes, BMW came out with the 645i and they made me want one by letting me know about it, but in the end, it is my choice to purchase it.
So many people have been complaining about shows like Crossfire? Not in my circle. When there are 1500 channels, anyone might be able to get a TV show. The point is that we aren't forced to watch the same shows over and over again. They are competing for our eyeballs. I don't watch Crossfire. I used to when it was the only "debate" show. Now I rely on the blogs to challenge ideologies and hold our leaders and the media accountable. Yeah, if there really was a conspiracy to dumb us down, you would see more people coming to the defense of TV programming. There aren't. TV, in general, isn't good for you. Vote swapping is relatively harmless but that doesn't mean it should be encouraged. These rules apply for only one election, although a somewhat huge election because it represents control of 1/3 of the federal goverment's powers. But it's important to remember that you are voting for your state's choice for a President. The President is not your represenative in the federal government; he is the states' representative to the world and he is a check to the power of the leaders that represent you.
He's also our leader, so it may seem a little unfair that he can be put there with a minority of votes, but there are very good reasons behind it. There's one consolation - your vote does count as much as someone else in your state.
In regard to the Electoral College forcing a two party system, why does a two party system exist in congress? All of our votes count the same there. If there were more or better leaders in the other parties, being brought about more interest in those parties, you would have six or seven parties like they do in the UK.
I don't believe that an election process designed to keep highly populated states from electing a president that only listens to them is the reason behind the lack of political parties. It's more likely a combination of the general indifference to the political process, the great deal of compromise that goes on to get laws passed and/or the vote stealing (whoring) by swinging to the center during elections.
They're all going to look the same eventually. But who really cares? Life's too short. Drink and be merry!
That's like saying your opinion should count just as much as someone else's. But that's not how the system works. You are voting for your state's choice for a President. He's also our leader, so it may seem a little unfair that he can be put there with a minority of votes, but there are very good reasons behind it. Yeah, I've touched the stuff. I've even put in my mouth when it was on fire and inhaled the poisonous smoke into my lungs and held it for a few seconds. It was alright. Still would rather drink and more of a menace to society. I haven't done it more than 15 times in my life, so I guess I still have the mental capacity to work for the government. Hell, the commander in chief snorted coke, and he's not doing too bad. Apparently raging alcoholics will be able to get on before I do because I've smoked pot in the past 3 years. Oh well, their loss!
Bin Laden was in charge because he had a shitload of oil money with which he used to form an Arab resistance to the Soviet invasion. We merely provided logisical support and sold him weapons. What does that have to do with us fucking up the region? I never said they hate Americans because they're jealous. They think their society would be better off without western influence. Which is like a black man on welfare blaming all of his problems on the white man and the conspiracy against his race. But there is no conspiracy. It exists only in his mind. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist, nor am I denying we have abused or power in our foriegn policy. But absolutely nothing we have done justifies the brutal murder of three thousand innocent civilians. And that's not the best way to help your people. We had to play a dirty game during the spread of communism, which ultimatey threatened our existence, and we have a right to exist. Who knows what the outcome of the cold war would have been if we didn't help prevent the Soviet invasion of Afganistan. The world is much better off, regardless political idealogy, because there is no longer a threat of nuclear armageddon.
Oh, because their region and society was so perfect to begin with. I'm sorry, but our CIA used a bunch of hardcore muslim warlords to defeat a common enemy and keep them from gaining more territory. They would be a bunch of commies, or worse- a struggling former soviet republic, if we didn't use them. You honestly believe that a society that oppresses half of its population because they were born without penises, and uses education only to promote religious fanaticism, would have made much progress in the last 40 years? It's all about power and control with them. Somehow we have it without resorting to barbaric behavior and systematically pitting groups of people against one another. They try to bring us down to their level, so that we'll lose clout with our allies. We just have to figure out some way to get rid of them before more idiots like you fall for their lie. In the meantime, lose that pathetic argument and figure out another way can pit the ills of the world on the U.S. I highly doubt you'll come up with something because you think like a bin Laden, and probably copulate with camels too.

He's not as stupid as Will Ferrel's impersonation. Everyone is a monday morning quarterback and thinks he/she can run things better. Some of those things you list aren't exactly fucked up. There's substantial support for them among both liberals and conservatives. The ones that can be definately attributed to this administration are the Patriot Act and the Office of Homeland Security. As a libratarian, those scare me. But when I voted for the guy, no one had any idea we were so vulnerable to terrorism. Bush ran on a promise of smaller government. Unfortunately, he feels we need more protection from the fuck-ups of the previous administration. I say if we cut down on the number of idiots we put in charge to handle public affairs, the better off we'll be.

No, stupidity is universal. We all do stupid things. And some only do stupid things. We can only hope and pray that these people don't manage to procreate.
But the U.S. is not a superpower for lack of intelligence. You could argue that we've been lucky, but I think it was the intelligence of the founding fathers and their ideals that paved the way for our industrial and financial success and our academic strength. Just look at how many people come to this country from all over the world just to attend our fine institutions of higher learning.
Our culture is so open and free, that it's hard for us not to notice idiotic behavior. We ridicule it impart because we like to feel better about ourselves. So does the rest of the world. "We may not have your boat loads of cash, but at least we don't give stupid washed-up blonde actresses their own TV show!" I'm pretty conservative and I think we have an idiot in the white house right now. But that, nor does the Anna Nicole-Smith Show sadden me. It just tells me that we have a great support net (good will) and we'll trade some intelligence for guts. (I wish I could have used 'land of opportunity', but those two had everything handed to them)
Not from what I've read on the technology. Laptops require a backlight whereas these do not. Motorola actually employed a 3 color oled display in one of their cell phones a couple years ago which I had no problem at all viewing in sunlight. But those were large led's, so I guess the verdict is still out for the tiny ones that will be required in graphic display devices.
I'm surprised they don't have an email only option. It looks like.Mac is for the people who want the complete Apple experience. The power user would use most of these services. I own a PC that requires a $20/yr subcription for Norton Antivirus, $20/yr for yahoo email, and if I wanted 100mb for online storage (photos, briefcase), it would run me $35/yr. That's $75 without support. So if the support is worth $25/yr then it's an OK deal. If not, I think a $25 premium fits within the typical Apple user's price range. It was a typical bait n' switch, but what isn't on the internet. Just like when Datek started charging account inactivity fees.

As a libratarian, those scare me. But when I voted for the guy, no one had any idea we were so vulnerable to terrorism. Bush ran on a promise of smaller government. Unfortunately, he feels we need more protection from the fuck-ups of the previous administration. I say if we cut down on the number of idiots we put in charge to handle public affairs, the better off we'll be.
the French, too!
(I wish I could have used 'land of opportunity', but those two had everything handed to them)
Congrats! You've been quoted in a News.com article. http://news.com.com/2100-1023-955617.html You're an authority on this subject now. ; )
No, these are the displays of tomorrow. So, you better get up early and get that digital newspaper before the neighbor's dog does his business on it.
I'm surprised they don't have an email only option. It looks like .Mac is for the people who want the complete Apple experience.
