People frequently use "geothermal" to refer to ground sink heat pumps. While these are more efficient than air heat pumps, true geothermal energy involves generating electricity from hot springs and other geological thermal sources.

Bad idea if you like your liver. Straight Dope and LSU Alcohol Research Center links for some background... A main contributing factor to hangovers is dehydration, so try loading up on water or gatorade or the like. Or eating something first.

I don't see anywhere in their disclosure statement where products other than MS products are tracked, so I'm not sure why you're being alarmist about "competing products". Perhaps they are collecting more info than they say they are, but that's not the issue you raised.

If we're talking about point-of-use emissions, then yes, hydrogen is the way to go. The issue is, how do we get the hydrogen. With our current technology, the most likely way of getting hydrogen will be refining fossil fuels, so it does indeed benefit the oil industry. The combination of hybrid/energy recapture systems and more efficient energy conservation measures (like LED lights for instance) with hydrogen may serve to improve matters, but that's not where GM, Ford et al are heading. Refined methanol/ethanol/etc. I'm guessing will be far more expensive per joule of energy than gasoline currently is, so conservation remains a concern. Re: power usage/demands, you have a point - nothing else is viable right now. Clearly that's why the US government should spend 100 times as much subsidizing oil production as it does to stimulate research of alternative energy sources such as photoelectric, wind, etc.

  8. Re:Secret ballot on Avi Rubin's Thoughts On e-Voting · · Score: 0, Redundant

The issue of coercion and votes being bought goes away with secret ballot. If I'm paid $5 to vote for GWB or JK, the person paying me can now verify I voted as I agreed. Or my boss can verify I voted the way he demanded. Or a thug can verify the way he demanded. Secret ballot = protection. A better way to make sure your vote is registered is to tightly control the process from the time your vote is submitted until it is counted to guard against fraud during this step. Your point about vote fraud is valid but a distraction - no one is arguing vote fraud does not happen, we're talking about magnitude of fraud. More democracy will be denied if secret ballots are done away with. Belchingjester

I've got to agree - got our whole development staff hooked on TextPad several years ago. Especially nice for coding are things like the syntax libraries for color-coding, and the excellent search/replace/bookmark (grep-like, even) and extensible copy/paste. Vi - blech! I have used vi (even used WinVi a while back), but it's just too clunky. Yes, it's available everywhere - so is McDonald's, but you wouldn't choose to eat there unless you have an "Accidental Tourist" view of the world.

Sorry, poorly formatted HTML. Try this: Isaac Asimov wrote the story "Reason" back in 1941 which uses the technology. Here is an abstract. He talks about the problem of constantly focusing the beam through constantly changing atmospheric conditions among other things. I think the space worth keeping an eye on. As the article itself noted, the launch is prohibitively costly at this point. We've got a major chicken-egg problem with solar - it isn't cheap enough for consumers to turn a profit on without major changes in lifestyle, and solar energy won't get cheap enough for painless mass adoption until production quantities increase.
