I submitted the Norm and Star Trek arguments to Bounty Quest a long time ago.

In Cheers, Norm orders a beer with one comment and receives it. All additional details of the transactions are handled using information already stored by the bar, similar to the amazon one-click experience. For example, see the exchange below.

    What's going on Mr. Peterson?
Norm: The question is what's going in Mr. Peterson. A beer please, Woody.

Norm has completed the entire shopping experience in one click of the tongue.

Unfortunately, O'Reilly didn't see fit to split the bounty with me but I'll be OK. I just hope this doesn't reduce my future 15 minutes of fame.

To be frank, I just don't believe you. There is no evidence to show that people did not whistle while they worked or sang or banged on things during that time. It may not have had a written language to go with it and it may not have been very organized but to say that everyday folk did not have music is downright ludicrous.

  7. Re:Good Idea on No More Coding From Scratch? · · Score: 1

Today's computer are so complex that code re-use is only the only natural way to progress.
Any time you don't start coding in raw machine language you are re-using code.

Developers learn first to code at a high-level. As they progress they learn the limitations of coding at a high-level and occasionally drop down to the lower levels. (One advantage of open-source programming is the ability to do that.)

The low-level programming is there to enable the high-level programming and works best when it can be mostly forgotten. We need programmers who can understand programming at all the different levels and that can select the proper level for the job.

I expected an action movie featuring snakes. I expected it to take place on a plane. I didn't expect moronic scenes like snakes attacking boobs and penises or physically impossible scenes like a snake striking and being able to pierce through the eye into the head. I also didn't expect people to die every time they fell down, even if no snakes were present.

Sorry but I don't consider this movie to have had any snakes in it. While I know they had some real snakes involved in the filming, the computer generated ones were totally ridiculous.

I'm not one for gross horror anyhow but this one could have been renamed "Tripping and Falling and Impaling On a Plane" or "The Attack of the Mutant Snakes on a Plane".

The reason it didn't do so well? It was a very stupid movie lacking any entertainment value whatsoever.

RIAA would love it if we would quit talking about it. I believe this is an attempt to run under the radar. Probably by selecting cities where the population is most likely to agree with them.

They would like to change public opinion and the nationwide attack strategy isn't working for them.

Personally I think that public opinion is generally anti-RIAA and no amount of attacking will change that. They're lucky we buy any of their recordings at all. If I had an option to choose artists who went with RIAA vs artists who went with Association X, I would probably pick Association X.

  12. Re:NO! on Two Jobs and Retire Early? · · Score: 1

Two jobs does not automatically lead to retiring early unless it also means you don't have time to spend the money you make. In reality most people are very resourceful when it comes to finding time to spend money.

The key to retiring early is saving/investing money. Learn to live on 80% of your salary if possible. If you have 2 jobs specifically for the purpose of retiring early, can you save the entire salary from the 2nd job?

Start putting money into investments that can support you wholly or partially without having to wait for retirement.

Suppose you reach a level where your investments are paying an amount equal to 25% of your current salary. You could then get a more exciting job that pays a bit less and still maintain the same level of earnings.

If you actually reached the level where your investment earnings were supplying all of your needs you could basically do whatever you want, in theory.

I also find that I do better at a job that I have a passion for, rather than one that I find boring and unchallenging so you might look for something like that. It could turn out to be more lucrative in the long run to take a job that pays a bit less and run with it, turning it into something that pays much more.

He obviously is familiar with web servers, web concepts, and configuration. In the long run he will do a better job than an under-experienced Apache admin.

Knowing concepts allows the administrator to function well beyond his knowledge level. Anyone can learn or get a list of "if X happens then do Y", which usually works out to "X happened, reboot again". If they actually learn the concepts and can figure out the reason behind it then they can say "X happened. We can do this and X will not happen again."
