    I don't use it. Is that a reason why I should refrain from criticising it? I don't smoke cigarettes either, should I avoid discussing their health implications when the subject arises?

    The problem is in using the same operator for semantically different operations. This is not like using "+" for both integer and floating-point addition. Stroustrup's example of using the left-shift for I/O was nothing more than a parlor trick, and it led a generation of C++ victims into some very bad habits.

    More than that, when you write in a language that doesn't have as much needless complexity as C++, then you have time debugging, and performance tuning that you don't have if you're using Stroustrup's Great Train Wreck.

    In decently written code, it's not a problem.

    In decently written code, you don't overload arithmetic operators for I/O.

    The criticism fundamentally boils down to: why should a language force me to think?

    No, the fundamental criticism is: why does C++ introduce so much complexity for so little benefit? It's not like Stroustrup didn't have plenty of examples of better work at the time. He can't claim that he made his mistakes because he wasn't familiar with the literature.

    Another post blames C++ for having an accretion-based design process.

    No, I don't blame the accretion, I blame the people who allowed it to continually adopt new misfeatures to try to work around the previous mistakes.

    Oh, that stings.

    Hey, if Stroustrup suffers a little bit of "stinging" for the thousands of man-years of pain he's caused to a generation of developers, I'm not going to shed a tear for him.

    The website I linked to is the first one I hit when I googled for "ADA abuse". I first heard about the problem about ten years ago, when I read a story about some shyster who was systematically shaking down bars and restaurants in Denver.

    the whole thing reeks of an astroturfing campaign. I wonder who's behind it...

    For example, the owners of places of public accomodation are prevented from discriminating on the basis of disability, but there is an upward limit on what they must implement.

    Regrettably, there's no limit on how many frivolous lawsuits can be filed against a business owner using the pretext of the ADA. Some people make a living suing businesses they've never even attempted to visit.

    This particular case will probably be rendered moot by the congress exempting the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from the ADA.

    There's no reason whatsoever other than laziness for not modernising the US currency.
    You seem to have neglected the millions that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing would spend modifying their processes, not to mention the billions it would cost to upgrade all the cash-counting machinery owned by private businesses.

    Hey, since you're so generous, why don't we just draft you and others who share your opinion to be full-time money-handling assistants for the blind? Think of the warm, fuzzy feelings you'll get from actually helping people yourself instead of just waving your hands and proclaiming that a problem exists only because of laziness!
