If the auto-pilot outperforms most human drivers, then switching to it is a win.
What I really want though, is to trade off auto pilot for higher speed. A robot can drive at 180 MPH just about as easily as it can drive at 55. I want to see real high-speed lanes on our highways. They could go a long way to reducing congestion.
Didn't know she ever took a shot at closing down Playboy. I just remember those bullshit "tipper stickers" that the record companies agreed to in exchange for who knows what.
Yeah, I'm going to come right out and say it: Playboy has been on a fairly steady decline ever since Hef let his daughter start running the joint. They not only failed to gain a significant place in the online world, they also failed to deal with the wave of competition they had from the likes of Perfect 10 back in the 1980s.
If you look at any of their videos from the last 15 years or so, you'll want to slap their directors and cameramen and tell them to quit it with the artsy shit and actually hold a shot that shows bare breasts for more than five seconds at a time.
I wouldn't hire a man to run a women's magazine, and it's just as asinine to let a woman run a men's magazine.
Printing dollars like mad was the only response available.
You're confusing who was responding to whom. The Fed has been on a money-shitting bender since Volcker left, and the Chinese (like pretty much every other country) were inflating their own money just to try to keep pace with the US dollar.
The cause of the Depression was a widespread credit contraction,
That was the cause of the crash. What turned the crash into the Great Depression was the insane anti-recovery policies of Hoover and Roosevelt that kept the economy in the shitter until 1946.
One thing that is constant in most economies is that the majority of people are borrowers.
This has not always been the case, and borrowing has been enormously increased by the practice of letting central banks conjure money out of thin air. There was a time when businesses routinely saved their own money to finance capital improvements instead of borrowing and paying interest.
If everybody knows there will be deflation then they know that if they hold on to their money it will be worth more in future.
That's what Krugman claims, but it's bullshit now, and it was bullshit when Keynes first decided to try to convince people that they were better off being robbed by central bankers diluting their money.
Here's the example that disproves the claim: Everyone knows that when it comes to electronics, next year's model is going to be better/faster/more bang for the buck than this years' model, but the electronics industry isn't starving to death because of everyone sitting on the sidelines and refusing to buy devices because they'll get more for their money in the future.
Inflation benefits governments and other profligate borrowers. Deflation benefits savers (and everyone else, to a lesser extent.)
In my entire career, having worked with quite a few adherents of the Hindu faith, I've never heard one of them complain about the number that makes up your username.
It's not like he's friends with the president or anything.
The political class doesn't have friends. Rahm and Obama found each other convenient for a while. Either of them would stab the other in the back if there were any political advantage to be gained in doing so.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm just glad that this isn't a tax-funded boondoggle. Let the tree-hugging hippies waste their own money on this shit.

Didn't read the article, did you?
-jcr
Is there any reason at all for this to be on Slashdot
The reason is that /.'s new owners feel a need to perform virtue signaling rituals for their fellow left-wingers.

Obama is always on the right side of history
Obama signed an extension of the PATRIOT act within two years of taking office. Pull your head out of your ass.

Science is never settled.

I agree that fusion is unlikely to solve any of our problems in the near future, but what I've read about thorium reactors is very promising.

When you don't know what you're talking about, it's best to stay anonymous.
Apple's ARC memory management doesn't stop and run collection sweeps. This isn't an early 1980s LISP we're talking about.
-jcr
Yeah, can't really avoid that when you set out to emulate a Microsoft product...

Smoot-Hawley was one of a series of idiotic schemes. I wouldn't say though, that it did as much damage as Roosevelt's wage and price controls.
-jcr
Henry Morgenthau, thought Roosevelt was completely insane.
And he was right. Roosevelt did almost as much damage to the USA as Diocletian did to the Roman empire.

Saving your money is bad for the economy
WRONG.
Misers are ideal neighbors. By sitting on their earnings, they don't have their money out there competing with yours.

Do the math. How many people died in the 20th century due to government versus corporate crimes?
-jcr
Every dollar, yen, euro or pound that's kept out of government hands is a good thing.
-jcr
I should probably have qualified that with "anything any SJW ever said with the intent of being funny."
-jcr
In my entire career, having worked with quite a few adherents of the Hindu faith, I've never heard one of them complain about the number that makes up your username.
Conclusion: Hindus are better people than SJWs.
-jcr
Yes, they're now known as "prat" and "prat hub", respectively.
(Prat being gender-neutral.)
-jcr
Your loss, bro. Take it from those of us who actually have a sense of humor, it was funnier than anything any SJW ever said.
