    So having a resolution independant desktop would be a good way of solving that issue (though obviously you still get these issues with the web).

    But SVG can be used on the web, too, and with generic CSS styles (font-size:x-large etc) and no more pixel based layout (points is fine), then this problem should also go away. In theory ;-/

    I'll give you a wonderful example. Brigham Young University decided to show Schindler's List to the students. Except, they wanted to show their own version, with all the "offensive content" removed. Speilberg said "no way", and he was fully within his rights to do so.

    Bad analogy. It was a public display, so permission was required.

    No they don't.

    The RIAA has (should have) no hope of a subpoena unless they have reasonable evidence that someone has been illegally downloading music for which they are the copyright holder's agent.

    For months the State IT Agency had winced at the incessant expense of buying software licences for hundreds of thousands of staff spread across government departments. Now the agency has declared that it will ditch expensive brand name software in many cases and switch to opensource alternatives.

    It seems they have merely made open source the stated preferred option. Closed source alternatives will not be banned.

    Damn, i was agreeing with everything you said, up to the last line ;).

    In all likelihood, it DOES hurt Toast. If there's no simple way other than buying a big, powerful package, you'll buy it. For a lot of people, the iTunes/Finder stuff will be enough, and they will not buy toast. Does that hurt? Sure. Is that a problem? Nope. The end goal is benefit for the *public*, not companies. MS did bad not (for example) in crushing netscape, but rather because in crushing netscape it harmed consumers.

    This is essentially the same as the "five nines" reliability that was touted for uptimes. Failures require deviations from the mean of six standard deviations, corresponding to 99.9996% success rate.

    It's just another metric. Don't get too excited.

    Electromagnetic forces are very powerful, but only over short distances. The nuclear strong and weak forces fall in the middle accordingly. The nuclear strong force is stronger that electromagnetism over short distances, IIRC. This is why protons can stick together in the nucleus although electromagnetism pushes them apart.

    And I really hate prefixing all variables with '$'. Maybe they can do something about that...?

    And maybe C should get rid of the *'s for pointers, they look ugly.

    Seriously, one of PHP's great strengths is the very nice and simple "do what i mean" syntax, which would be much harder without an easy way to distinguish variables.

    Perl is even more flexible with how you write things, but it has @'s and %'s everywhere. I think PHP has a good compromise.
