I made the switch over last December. Love it. I was really more of a FreeBSD user, but you get the idea. It's wonderful to be able to have an attractive GUI with all too many bells and whistles to work with, but still be able to throw up a terminal window with bash and work with the real heart of things if you feel the need. Plus the ability to run XFree86 rootless on top of the GUI is nice.

My karma would look alot better if I was :D

I think the problem is that the music industry is charging too much money for a CD. Artists benefit more from live performances than from CD sales to my knowledge anyway, so who are we really supporting?

Read an interesting article in PC World this month I believe where Dvorak ranted about how CDs should cost $1.40. I don't know if I agree with his logic in that article totally, but the real point he tried to make was this: at that rate, they'd still be making money, and when something is less than $2 the monteary lines between burning a CD and buying one are blurred.

Sorry if my original post was more like a ramble, but I don't know who else is supposed to solve the piracy problem. I don't believe there is physically a way to stop piracy, only ways to make it less attractive.

  16. Re:Security though obscurity... on More on DVD-Audio and SACD · · Score: 1

I don't know. To some degree, I think they've got a point there. For example, look at some serious technology flops. Even if bandwidth and computing power hadn't restricted things, I really doubt people would have been pirating laser discs. It's just a PITA. Same with MD when you could actually buy minidisc albums at Best Buy and Circus City.

If nobody adopts the technology, they're definately less likely to have to worry about piracy. Of course, they're also less likely to have to worry about making money,.

  17. Thank God on More on DVD-Audio and SACD · · Score: 3, Funny

I'm relieved to hear that someone has finally come up with technology that will prevent audio piracy. I will sleep so much better at night knowing that I can no longer comit these horrible crimes against society. Thank God these new inventions are so often complicated enough that nothing short of a black magic marker can break the glorious encryption! [/sarcasm] Now, I understand these people are trying to market their goods, and stressing the fact that it's difficult to copy is probably a good strategy for them to use to sell to record companies, but jesus.. is anyone still stupid enough to believe that if a technology can be invented to "prevent" compying, that it cannot be surcomvented just as easily? I wish they'd spend this much time coming up with a real solution to the problem rather than trying to throw money at it.

I'm 20 and I just moved back to the college town I originally started Uni in and I'm hoping they're going to let me in without a struggle because of my poor GPA. The company I went for was doing fine for a good while, but then steadily became taking turns for the worse, and eventually I was laid off and because of how my sneaky boss worked things was unellegable for unemployement or anything. In the market right now, it's a real bitch to find a job (at least where I am, I'm still unemployed and about out of savings, feh) especially without a degree. Juggling full time work and night school is a pain--I left--but I promise you if you keep with it I'm sure it'll make for a great backup plan. One thing has been bothering me about our "search for Osama" or whatever.. assuming we did find him, wouldn't we have to produce hard evidence that he was behind 9/11? Now, don't get me wrong, I understand what we *know*, but what we *know* and what flies in some kind of court ruled by international law is totally different. I can't seem to recall anything where he claims responsibility, but rather that he's always just praising whoever did it. Assuming we found him, do you guys believe that we would have any idea? I personally think that we wouldn't be informed until after he was tried and executed by the military. It seems we're after Osama more for vengance than for our own safety at this point, so that just makes sense to me. --- Anyway.. I understand why today is very serious and all of that, but did America just forgot about 9/11 until a year later? It sure as hell seems like everybody decided to pretend it didn't happen and then just remembered today. I was not personally affected by these events of course, but I had coped with them fairly quickly. It was the first real attack on America from an outside force since Pearl Harbor as best as my memory serves me.. thousands died, and I do feel sorry for those who lost loved ones, but relative to the number of people who die every single day, or just when compared to the total number of people in this country, let alone the world, the number is small. If we continue to freak out about this and allow it to change us, then they've really suceeded. I mean, the point of "terrorists" is to terrorize, right? I mean, they scare the hell out of it, it's what they do. Well, apparently they did a damn good job since we're all freaked out as hell about all of this.
