Having your data destroyed by a virus is no different than having it destroyed by a faulty HDD. HDD's have moving parts and therefore _SHOULD_ be expected to fail. Anyone who doesn't backup something as important as that doesn't deserve their data
The difference in this instance is probably that most things we discover these days that are considered artifacts are NOT made of wood. Even in extreme cold how long would the frame etc of an ark actually last?
The way I see this fork is basically like an unstable branch of the linux kernel. This way they can just work on the video and voice without messing up gaims normal development and without having to work out why something has broken because someone else applied a patch for something unrelated that breaks it. This way the only patches applied with be fore video and voice, and once thats working properly they can drop it into the current devel branch and make it work
While you make some valid points I think it's a little harsh to say this is a bad decision. If I remember my Apple history right Jobs pretty much let Apple run itself for a long time. Over that time their market share dropped to almost nothing, then he came back and released the iBook with all it's pretty colour and pretty much turned it around for Apple. Now he's told a dead end company that most of will agree are on their last legs to go away and die quietly.
You'd be surprised how many things, internal to Windows still use Win16. It was one of the things bought up when talking about the 64bit version for AMD64 and how making it fully 64bit would be almost impossible.
The thing is if Longhorn isn't secure out of the box they will be. That means no open services binding to interfaces other than 127.0.0.1. Whilst this won't kill them outright people are now starting to learn just how fundamental some of the problems with windows are and just how futile it is to try and keep a system up to date on a dial up modem.
Based on the way SP2 for XP is looking they may finally be learning this lesson, but if they don't it may not be a question of running out of money and more a question of running out of customers (one leads to the other I know but they have a LOT of money to spare even without customers)
Not baging LOTR, but Gollum was NOT consistent. When he was shown in fellowship he was NOTHING like the last 2 movies. This was primarily cos theydecided to have an actor do his movements and ended up using said actors face gestures.
This is the major point that is overlooked when people talk Gb networks. Only with PCI-X slots do you see a major improvement in performance, and I would doubt that a home network contains even one PCI-X slot.
once you get around the IDE or SATA, the audio, the USB2 or Firewire (if we're talking video editing) etc etc etc, you would be better adding another standard network card and teaming them for your major data stores in the network and leave everything else as it is.
Also on a side note a 1 X PCI Express slot is ~250MB in each direction (about ~500MB total) so yes a 1 X PCI-E slot will do Gb ethernet fine
I think what John has done in this article is not try to understand exactly what Eric meant. He took the words at their face value. For example Eric basically said that the UI sucked cos it didn't automatically do this and that and help him in the process, which is true. But there was also the underlying notion that whilst the UI didn't try to help him (and when it did it was wrong), his major problem with it was that it didn't work. Buttons lead no where, help didn't work or was unhelpful.. now making your buttons work as advertised and having at least some help when you press the help button (since someone had to put the help button there in the first place), isn't hard or too much to expect in my opinion
We can buy a DVD player and take it to a repair agent and have them replace a chip that removes the region code and the unit must still be covered under warranty.
It's not really done these days though since almost all of the DVD players are region free anyway, or can be made so via the menu.
Haven't read the article (wouldn't want to ruin the tradition), but maybe is they use recycled wood, as they would then be saving trees that would otherwise be cut down to make computer parts
So use a mail client that doesn't use ActiveX and if you can't (eg using Exchange) implement some server side virus scanning with auto updating or some gateway filtering of activex code
I'm assuming you are linked to the project, forgive me for the rant if thats incorrect.
Might I suggest you get a webserver/ISP that is somewhat reliable. I've been trying to get a copy of this software since it was alst mentioned on Slashdot. The site was slashdotted when I first tried, cool I thought, I'll check again tomorrow. Still down the next day, OK I think maybe there's still an effect. I wait a week and check again thinking maybe they went over their cap from their ISP and they shut them down, but the site was still down and stayed that way for weeks.
I finally get back to it today and the site was up, great I think, so I try to download the latest version (before this story hit v2.08 if I remember), and the file wasn't there, although it was probably getting 2.10 copied up and linked. Then when I hit Slashdot I see this and of course the site is now down again (imagine my surprise).
How long will anyone that actually wants a copy of this have to wait? Could you not actually host a copy on your sourceforge site too so that people who want to use this could actually get a copy to install?
On a slightly related note when I was there I noticed they are looking for someone to write some installation scripts to add installation with various MTA's, again kind of hard to do if no one can actually get a copy.
OK I'm finished:-)
If they were disabled due to "silly rule violating" then they deserve to be disabled. How would you feel if you were on one of the teams that got 7 miles and then had someone pass you and get 8 miles but broke 3 rules on the way.
They all knew the rules going in, and if they didn't comply then they deserve to be shutdown (this is ignoring DARPA's rule change to include teams that didn't finsih the qualifying course).
While I agree with this COMPLETLY. The simple solution is do not enter an industry where this is a possible outcome. I know that sounds simplistic but it's something you must consider before you start, and if you continue down this road then you have accepted it as a risk.
Laws need to be put in place (or perhaps the current laws enforced _correctly_) that will address this as the current situation is worse than a death sentence.
We're going to make you broke to the point you have to become bankrupt, and then after that since no one in your field will EVER employ you again you will have to completly reskill in another industry costing you more money (that you don't have) and maybe in 10 years time your bank balance may get into the positive again (if you're lucky)
Not to mention XeonMP processors aren't up to 3.06GHz, and thats what you need for 4 way
You wouldn't be saying that if it was Microsoft with the mysterious aura

Or when he gets Real to link to their free player from their front page :-)

You make the large assumtion that people that do not attend a university are incapable of learning the theory of why/how things work

This is correct, the NX bit is missing from the Intel implementation

Actually the question we should be asking is where the HELL is the firmware update to remove this "feature".
I can't understand anyone releasing an advisory that says "Yeah we screwed up and got caught, but we're not even going to try and fix it so there"
Since when was 35 greater than 232? While I suspect it's a typo one would think (hope?) Taco may have picked it up

I'll elaborate... Yup :-)

It can be done already without much work at all if you currently have a linux firewall http://www.freenet6.net/requirement.shtml
Might I suggest "Alpha and Omega" by the same guy that wrote Zero (as referenced above), als Zero would be worth a read
So get a pager, they are not cell phones and will do all you need
Fantastic.... Really I would live to try it.
:-)
