Might I suggest you (re)read Rebel Code. Having just finished it, I can tell you that RMS was left out of the little group that came up with "open source". He was left out intentionally as all knew he would have no part of it when it came to effectivly renaming a movement he created single handedly (almost).

Also the term "open source" was thought up directly to make it more marketable to the press/business communities, and also to setup a little distance between themselves and RMS.

  7. Re:Perhaps broadband should charge 'per megabyte'? on Death of Decent Australian Broadband · · Score: 1

I'm living in Christchurch. There are currently 2 High Speed providers:

1.ADSL on a system called Jetstart. Terms are 5GB limit 128k each way. This is comparable in price to a phone line and dialup account. You can also go to Jetstart, which is 8M down and 2M up, but is much more expensive.

    2. Cable from TelstraClear (this is more dependant on location), this is what I have and there are a few packages avaliable. You can get 128k both ways with a 10GB limit for about the same as the Jetstart price. You can also get 256k down 128k up for about the same price but you only have a 5GB limit. There are also various other plans avaliable for up to 2MB down speeds.

Other notes is that the cable service gives you a static IP for no charge and the external modem is just a media converter so your machine network card has the IP bound to it (good for firewalling), whereas on ADSL you eaither have to have an internal modem (and then try to find Linux drivers for it) or get an external router that does NAT.

Since it isn't mentioned in the article, the reason the BNETD team don't have CD-KEY checking is because they don't have the algorithim that is used by Blizzard... If they did then everyone could see the source code to make perfect Blizzard CD-Keys and anyone could play on Battle-Net without buying the game.

It's not the fault of Blizzard or of the BNETD team that they don't have CD-Key checking. It a no win situation either way.
