Excuse my twisted little mind, but has the GPL ever been tested? Do AOL have the money to go up against it? If they win, they then have a very good OS with which they can change to do whatever they want very easily.. I'm not saying AOL would do this, but buying the biggest Linux distro, then killing the GPL would get them a good way to have something to go against Windows with.

Make that percentage 100. Do we need the money? Not really. The only problem I see is that eventually (If they were good), they would run out of spammers to sue, and so would be out of a job. And it would all start again.

While this sounds cool. Why? If you need to go to a phonebooth to send an email what are you going to use as a return address. Presumably if you had access to the internet you would also have acces to email of some kind, and if you didn't have access to the net you wouldn't have a return address and they couldn't reply.

To address your first point. It seems to me that there is only 1 user defined in /etc/passwd and that user is root. So the comment was correct. Assuming the only 2 ways to get into this box are by hacking one of the services or logging in as root. In either case the hacker will have root access and so either has the password (if they logged in), or have no need for it (if for example they added a /bin/bash line to inetd.conf)
