  1. Something like this actually happened on The Demise of Model Rocketry? · · Score: 4, Insightful
Once a serial arsonist used paper and gasoline to burn down 350 buildings, killing about 20 people in a month. He was facinated by fire. This happened in the US. For a determined terrorist, it just takes a can of gas, as what happened in Korea where 120 were killed and the man in question was just deranged and mentally disturbed. Banning things like this only cause inconvinience to normal people. Terrorists find a workaround.

Here in india, owning a gun is a nightmare, there are tonnes of documents and it takes ages. If somebody wants to own a gun it is actually a nightmare to do it legally, and guess what terrorists roam with AK-47s.

In my opinion, your adminstration has gone mad.

IMHO, wont this be unfair. There are small manufacturers in WLAN area who provide wireless cards for notebooks. In such a case intel can easily produce the whole package and very much capture the notebook wireless market bu keeping operating margins low initially. After competition is eliminated then they can put any pricing to their advantage. Its like intel manufacturing PCs with intel motherboards and only those PCs with intel motherboards will be allowed to be named as Genuine intel.

Its always good to have peripherals separate from chip. Another danger is that intel can have a set of proprietry registers and pipelines which are not disclosed however the WLAN card from intel will be able to use it to give better performance!. Not really good i think. Its okay to have own WLAN cards but the way intel is going about is not really ethical

I would like to add here that many times communications satellites used for TV also are used for VSAT communications. On TV if the satellite has wobble booters in the receiver can compensate, but such satellites are pretty much useless for internet(VSAT).

We has a 128kbps VSAT terminal at college supplied by aging ernet satellite. Data rates used to come down to 2kbps yes kilo BITS. Such satellites are normally space junk, however this may allow us to sqeeze the last bit of life from the satellite, and this will result in cost of cummunications to come down pretty much. The root cause of such difference in other products and electronic items is that the lawmakers tend to see the internet/electronics/software as a different domain altogether. We have not so much advanced in the digital age that it comes naturally to us. Think, the senaters read their snail mail, but email is left unread.

The article talks compares this to auto makers authorizing repair only at specific places. Such a practice will be shot down immediately. But in case of the e-world, the big cartels have hyped this up as a specific domain where rules are different. And the law makers are also beginning to see this as such. Unless we break this mindset of the e-world as something different and obscure such practices will go unnoticed. This will keep happening until the common man, the silent majority does not start using infotech in daily life. For example if such a practice came in a budget automobile, there would be an outcry, because many many people use it, but in case of DVD, a small percentage of the users will ever go to Europe to Buy DVDs. We need to go a long way.. and going by the incresing restrictions on internet.. this will take a long time. No matter how hard the detracters try, this revolution will come and nobody can do anything about it :)

the article is a bit misleading. Actually it is MPEG-4 which is being pushed. MPEG-4 is pretty save standard. Lots of chip vendors are incorporating it and this will kind of save it from patent troubles. As of now there is no liscensing/patent problem for this. If MPEG-4 is adopted as an industry standard it will be a big win for consumers..... Now only if they adopted ogg too!

This way we could have OGG for audio and MPEG4 for video. Current MEDIA processors are very advanced and low cost. So computation power wont be a bottleneck if a standard is evolved which uses both OGG and MPEG-4. M$ may be king in OS domain, but in the Chip and Digital entertainment industry its the likes of TI/Intel/ST etc which rule the roost... and they are going to push for all its worth.

In fact it is a very good thing. Normally hardware guys are not so touchy about software rights(most of the times) they are concerned with mostly selling hardware and if you buy hardware you get most software goodies for free.

I feel that rather than talking about extreme steps like boycott etc., slashdot should put up a page so that atleast slashdotters hit on it.... son it will show up on googles results too! More information the people will make things better. We can have an ask slashdot story about indie and small bands and then the most informative posts can be used to compose the page initially.
