No wonder the Catholic Church is in the mess it is, if "for the record, that the average Catholic is taught that the Pope is infallible"
The doctrine of Papal Infallibility was of the driving forces behind the (First) Vatican Council in 1870, and the wedge that split off the 'Old Catholic' Church. The teaching is that when the Pope speaks ex cathedra or "from the seat" on matters of Faith and Morals. Generally, such pronouncements are made only after a lot of colsultation and debate among Theologians, and are VERY rare. About the only instance of this doctrine being used that I can recall off-hand is the declaration of the Dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
Most don't believe it but that's another matter. Be careful there, friend. Every denomination that has split from the Catholic Church has split because they didn't choose to accept one or another of the Church's teachings. Remember that refusing to accept even one article of faith is enough to seperate you from the Church.
You might be a confirmed something but not a Catholic.

It's really insulting, the way they treat paying criminals like criminals. Every time I go to a new store and they try this, I make a point of sending a very nasty letter to the store afterwars. Then I never bring my business back to them.
Especially in the examples given above, there are too many other choices (including on line purchases) for me to bother with them ever again.

Where I live, they offer a "Master Gardener" program , which lasts about 9 weekends. The cost is basically buying the book for the class and helping tend some public gardens for 1 or 2 weekends.
Another good resource is a locally owned garden center or nursery. Don't expect the people at places like Lowe's/Home Depot to know anything.

  21. Re:Oops on Fuel Cell Car Goes Cross-Country · · Score: 1

In Harris and the surrounding 7 (?) counties (Houston, Texas), we recently reduced our freeway sped-limits from 70 to 55 because the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC, "train wreck") estimated that this would eliminate something along the lines of 12.3 tons of NOx pollution air per day.
Even the Harris County DA said that they would have a difficult time making speeding tickets stick, since a speeding ticket says that the vehicle was being operated at an unsafe speed. Given that the state had already posted a 70 mph speed limit, the state would then have to prove that >55mph is unsafe.
The latest word is that the model used to come up with the pollution reduction was flawed, and that based on the same levels (something like 5.8 tons per day), the same results can be obtained by Tx DOT burning only emulsified Diesel.
Now, one month after the last 55mph speed limit sign went up (the first went up in february), the speed limit is returning to 70.

Do we feel better now that we've got that knee-jerk reaction out of out system?
Having worked in systems for one of the major oil companies for 13 years, I can tell you that your weekly fill-up is NOT what's filling their coffers. The fact is that due to the competitive nature of selling gasoline, the margin per gallon is mere pennies.
Where they REALLY make the money is specialty products (lubricants, etc) plastics, and petrochemicals.
Even if Shell, BP/Amoco, ExxonMobil and the rest never sold you another gallon of gasoline they would STILL make money hand-over-fist because of these products, and possibly even more, since the expense of exploration and production would decline with the decline in demand.

There is also the lost city of Indianola, on the upper Texas coast. The city was washed away by a hurricane in the early part of the 20th century (or was it late 19th century?). Nothing but a few foundations remain as far as I know. The few who survived left to settle elsewhere.
An interesting anecdote related to this is that in St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, is a stained glass window of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. The organist at the time had never been to the coast, and decided to take a vacation. She told people that if anything happened to her, she wanted a stained glass window.
She was one of those lost at Indianola.

And while we're on the subject, I'd LOVE to have feeds of all the BBC channels from the UK, so I can see what's on NOW instead of what was on 2 years ago.
