Our Norton Exchange AV kicks out "we-saved-your-butt" emails to the admin, the original recip, and back at the "sender"

Not only is this something which you can configure, IIRC it's also not the default. I think the default is admin and recipient only. Perhaps this illustrates that those who select all the options are also part of the problem...

On WinXP at least, you don't need to install the Apple software if you're using EphPod. WinXP recognises the iPod as a FireWire disk, and EphPod prompts you when you first start it up which disk is the iPod. Simple as that. EphPod is simple and effective, like software should be. In fact, I never installed the Apple software.

The problem in this case is not that no-one knows what the data is, or how it is arranged, the problem is the "custom-built laser transducer". The laserdisc readers themselves are not around. (I wonder what happened to them all?). The Domesday project was only about 15-20 years ago, and no-one has got the laserdisc readers any more, or if they have, they need an Acorn to connect it to (our school used a BBC B IIRC)
One of the cool things was that if you put the disc in upside down (it was double sided), you started off with a video of the SAS storming of the Iranian embassy in London, ca. 1982.
