  1. He makes a good point... on UNIX Security: Don't Believe the Truth? · · Score: 1

He does make a good point about the stop gap between mortal and root users privileges. Most non-technical people don't appreciate the Unix security difference. They also don't appreciate strong passwords or good patch hygiene either.

I would opine that the weakest link in security is user ignorance. IT professionals and the l33t g33k types have no problem understanding packet filtering, host limiting, disabling services, strong passwords, patching, etc., etc., but the large throngs of ignorant users out there either don't know the significance of those types of security measures or they don't care.

Windows is so ubiquitous and MS markets themselves as the most secure, consumers just go with it. Ever try explaining why you think *nix is more secure than windows to an "ID10T" user?

Granted, MS has lots of problems with security (complacency being the most severe), but *nix in the hands of someone who doesn't understand it is even more dangerous--which is the authors point about the Mac users who are sitting on very powerful unix kernels and don't know it.

Having the most secure bunker in the world doesn't do a dang bit of good if you don't bother locking the door.

I'd say user education would be the best place to start improving security--arguing over why unix is more secure or which myth is "truthier" is yet another dead horse beating.

  5. Trojan Horse on Pixar Eaten by Mickey Mouse · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think Disney will become more Pixar like. If Jobs and Lasseter have any influence at all, the Disney shite that's been pumping out of their crap factory will start to improve.

This is actually a sneaky move by Steve to put the iTMS in a solid position to distribute content.

Let's not also forget that Disney distributes and produces under other brand names as well:

    -Buena Vista
    -Touchstone
    -Dimension
    -Miramax

So what kind of hook-up do you think "The Steve" is going to have for adding content to the iTMS?

Oh, also (if you, too, have read the wiki entry for Disney) Disney owns the rights to lots of music, too. Buena Vista Music Group--Disney Records, Mammoth, Lyric Street, and Hollywood.

Oh, and what else? Oh, let's see:

    Disney's Media Networks:
    -ABC
    -Disney Channel
    -ABC Family
    -Toon Disney
    -ESPN
    -SOAPNet
-Holdings in A&E, Lifetime and E!

  8. The Biggest Mac Security "Problem" on Mac users 'too smug' Over Security? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've seen this problem on our university's campus more than a half dozen times (oh, the horror!).

-User reads something about "SSH" to access his machine.
    -User turns on SSH
-User also has no imagination with password--uses common dictionary spellings
-User is cracked into with dictionary attack
-Security team shuts down port or blocks MAC after a bank calls to report attacks
    -User calls helpdesk
-Consultant re-installs MacOS X and smacks the user about the head and shoulders because they had no business enabling SSH
    -User has admin privileges stripped
    -Problem solved--for now.

So, the biggest "problem" is, indeed, user ignorance. But, out of the box, I'd say Macs are in pretty good shape against attacks and malware given the current lack (and history) of Mac spyware, trojans, or viruses (none that I know of).

Macs are not impervious, but they enjoy 2 major benefits:
    1) There aren't enough of them for a worm to spread quickly or effectively (which is what I'd want if I were in the black arts).
    2) They don't come with giant holes from the complacent company who wrote the OS--why work when you can pick the low-hanging fruit from MS?

With the new Intel chips, executeables might find new life in the Mac...but we'll see.

  10. Damage Pre- or Postmortem? on Ancestors of Homo Sapiens Hunted by Birds · · Score: 1

The article didn't say much about the damage or how it was ascertained that it was not a postmortem marking from scavangers. (Ever see a big buzzard chow down on a carcass? They tear the crap out of it). They also steal from each other carting off verious pieces (like the skull). Say monkeys (or some pre-humanoid critter with an unpronounceable name) had some ritual where they were creeped out by the dead still eyes of the recently departed--what if they liked to poke 'em out with some stoney object they made/found? Or maybe The Falconer set the steely talons of Donald upon his mortal enemy--the pre-humanoid critter with an unpronounceable name, feasted upon his worm monkey brains, and thus, drove him to extinction!

Science like this begins where you assume something is true and you run with the theory--and if you can't find any evidence that goes against your theory, everyone congratulates you on your brilliant discovery. Perhaps a new technique down the road will prove this one wrong like this one refutes the sabor tooth tiger mauling. I think the damage could have easily been done postmortem by scavangers--unless they can prove otherwise with necropsy details. Although, with a 2 million year old cold case, it's anyone's guess.
