Haven't they figured out yet that the people that download this crap will NEVER EVER actually buy the DVD release. If you're going to spend DAYS downloading some crappy copy over a P2P network rather than spend a lousy $10 to see it, then that's sad. My time is worth more than a $10 movie ticket. I'll see it in the theater and buy the DVD when it comes out.
SCO is just pissed than no one will buy them now. This is all just smoke and mirros in the hopes that some big player will gobble them up.
Sad really. And if SCO is so damn worried abou their code in Linux, let them take the kernel, scrub it clean and release a tarball. AT&T did it with BSD.
See how fast Linux and Alan and CO. fill the gaps!
SCO sues IBM claiming UNIX source is in Linux. IBM DOES NOT buy outr SCO, despite SCO's plan for them too.
Microsoft sees this a great way to impact Linux, so in order to legitimize SCO's claim on Linux, they decide they're going to license SCO's technology from them. Though they probably don't need to, and don't have any IP issues, by spending some money, they help legitmize SCO's claims against Linux.
The probably would have just bought SCO outright, but the would sicked the trust busters on them faster than you can imagine...
And now SCO is threatening to pull IBM's UNIX license. Well both IBM and HP have announced that they plan to move to Linux as their primary OS for their midrange systems, instead of AIX and HP/UX.
I don't want to say UNIX is dying here, cause it's not, but UNIX is definitelyu being looked at less and less by it's 2 biggest licensees. SCO sees this and doesn't like it. After all, they abandoned their Linux business in favor of UNIX, and now they're learning a lot of people have abandoned their UNIX business in favor of Linux.
I think HP, IBM, RedHat and all those UnitedLInux companies should buy SCO and release all that UNIX source code under the GPL.
But I don't think they should buy SCO till AFTER they lose in court. Don't give SCO what they want, which is a buyout.
I would like SCO to show the copied code along side the Linux code. Then I want an independant party to take ALL the UnixWare source code, and I mean ALL of it, with the offesive code they claim Linux has and the COMPILE IT and boot up UnixWare and run something third party and shrinkwrapped out of the box on it.
If they just randomly cut and paste code into their own source to try and make it look like there's UNIX code in Linux, this might be a good test to make sure they didn't just snip code and put it in UnixWare.
1. ALL the iApps can easily be removed by simply dragging them to the trash and emptying it. Poof! Gone forever. Just try and do that with Internet Explorer or MSN Messenger. There's a difference between force bundling and comingling code.
2. WMP is spyware. iTunes isn't. If they want to put a music download service into WMP, more power to them.
Adobe makes a product called After Effects. They also make a product calld Premier. Well, products from Apple such as Final Cut Pro. iMovie, iDVD and DVD Studio Pro compete directly with these products.
Since you can now buy a Mac and get iDVD and iMovie for free, Adobe stands to make little money on the sale of Macs for video editing.
So, they need to show the world that the PC is a faster platform. If you buy a PC for DV, you way more likely to buy After Effects and Premier.
It's all marketing hype. Adobe is no better than MS when it comes to skewing statistics.
Yeah well, why the hell do you think that tickets cost so damn much? I can't get a sporting event ticket with even half decent seats for less than $60-70. Why? Because that damn athelete is being paid MILLIONS to do something every school kid in America does for free. Good work if you can get it, but worth MILLIONS a year.
The worst part is, KIDS LOOK UP TO THESE PEOPLE. If they are going to pay these kids this much money, their contract should have a MORALITY CLAUSE in it. If you don't abide by a certain set of rules (no drugs, no concealed weapons without a permit, no womanizing, etc.), you break the contract and get tossed.
If more people could get 10.2 million for become researchers, then more kids would want to do it. I don't see too many inner city kids playing with microscopes at home in the hopes they could one day cure cancer or MS. They're more interested in getting good at Basketball cause they think that will get them out of the bad neighborhood they live in.
There's a boatload of stuff that be used in terrorist acts. Paper can start a fire. Rags and alcohol can also be used. Gasoline can be used to light a subway on fire. But somehow I don't see them banning gasoline or alcohol. So they have to pick on model rockets? A hobby that encourages people to learn about science in a fun way and encourages young minds to consider real careers.
You know, before I went into technology, I used to be a research biologist. Hobbies like Model ROcketry are what kept me interested in science as a kid led me to pursue all science.
You know, if we had recuiters for Pharmaceuticals stading outside of colleges offering new graduates 10.2 million over 3 years, then cancer would have been cured 10 years ago. Why do athletes, that contribute NOTHING to society, get paid the most in our society?
I think this can teach everyone a valuable lesson

FreeBSD 5.0 RC3 Now Ready
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
No open source project is dead as long as there is ONE hacker out there willing to hack on it. Everyone has been screaming FreeBSD is dead for a long time now and guess what? Here comes 5.0. The success of an open source project is not measure by it's use, but by whether or not someone is still willing to hack on it.
So when iPhoto 2.0 comes out, the 1.1 version that came with their iMacs will suddenly stop working. iMovie also? Get a clue. Their machine still does everything they need. If they want it to do more than that, then they have to pay.
iMovie2 was a paid upgrade. It would not surprise me if the others were paid upgrades, but the newest version would be free with new Macs. That's been Apple's policy as far back as I can remember for the OS.
I have used a Mac since 1986 and one of the things I have noticed is that whenever Apple charges Mac users for something, they WHINE AND COMPLAIN like little kids that had their lollipops taken away. When System 7 came out and it was a pay upgrade the screams were deafening. Apple zealots (of which I count myself one), seem to think that everything Apple does should run on their old Mac Plus and be free.
And what makes you think that the MacOS would be able to play Flash files? I can see them discontinue their whole like of MacOS apps and stop releasing Flash player for Mac REAL FAST.
The last piece of cross platform software that Microsoft bought was FrontPage. After version 1.0, we NEVER saw another Mac version.
Apple buys parts and puts them together. They don't make HDs. They do make cases and motherboards, however. Or they pay someone to make them for them. And the price of OS development is factored into the price of the hardware.
BUT, I can buy an Apple with a smaller HD, less RAM and Apple will discount the machine for me. I can buy a Mac WITHOUT an HD and I get a break from Apple. Why, because Apple DOES NOT make these parts. But I can't get a discount from Apple on the OS because they consider that a freebie.
Now when it comes to PCs, Compaq DOES NOT make Windows. Neither does HP, DELL, IBM or any other PC maker and I should be able to have that part of the package removed and the price discounted, since these companies physically PAY SOMEONE ELSE to buy their product.
Well, the Mac is slightly different, because Apple clearly states that all Macs come with a FREE copy of the MacOS on the machine. New machines always come with the OS for free. You only get charged if you upgrade it. It's the same for Solaris boxes. You buy the hardware and Sun throws in Solaris. Upgrading to a new version of Solaris file.
What's different with PCs is that hardware makers don't make the OS, they BUY it from another company (Microsoft). Because of that, they pass on the cost to you and you should be able to get a refund.
If it does not work, take them back to the store. Demand your money back.
I was under the assumption that Sony and Phillips owned all the rights to the use of the CD Logo and the right to claim that a CD is Red Book compliant. I'm sure Phillips will file suit against this.
This is all just an attempt by a dying industry to save itself. With the advent of P2P file sharing services and the now defunct Napster, people don't NEED record companies any more to distrinute their music or to give them their music.
In my ideal world, the music would be available for download from some web site by an artist and then a CD/DVD is made with lots of value add stuff, such as 5.1 surround mixes, possible music videos, etc.
You are soo right. Novell's products are an administration dream! NDS eDirectory is incredible. I have never met a sigle tech guy who didn't praise Novell after having used it. Novell's biggest problem is the fact that Microsoft has much better marketing.
1. PageMaker and Freehand were not originally Adobe apps. They were Aldus applications. Adobe later bought Aldus and aquired PageMaker. Sure there were many DTP apps then, but at the time PageMaker was the best, till Quark came along.
2. PDF is so much more than RTF or HTML. The idea behind PDF was to be able to generate a static uneditable document that would loook the same on any platform you open it on. In the original PDF, you have two serif and sans-serif fonts that could be used by Acrobat to substitute for fonts that were not on your system and they would scale to preserve the spacing of the document. Now, with the PDF 1.4 specs you can EMBED the fonts in the PDF document, allowing you to see EXACTLY what the person who created the document saw. PDF allows for document consitancy on ANY platform. That's it's real strength.
3. You could say Photoshop was a rip off of MacPaint, but the original MacPaint was black and white. I believe Photoshop 1.0 was the first color bitmap paint program for the Mac.
There's nothing wrong with Microsoft taking an idea like PDF and trying to improve upon it with XDocs. What's wrong is that with their triple monopoly (desktop, office suite and web browser), XDocs can become a de-facto standard without it being a better product than PDF.
Adobe doesn't make a web browser, OS, or office suite, so they wrote Acrobat in an attempt to make it compatible with all of the above.
Oh, and the PDF specs are open. Anyone can download the FULL specs for PDF 1.4 and make a PDF reader, editor, etc. No such luck with XDocs, with their hidden DTD.
Just tested CD burining of ogg files and it worked flawlessly. Since I don't have a portable MP3 player, I can safely say I will never make another MP3 file again.
Soon as ANYONE makes a hardware Ogg player, they'll get my money.
10.2 is compiled completely in gcc 3.0. I would think even things like Apache would run faster when compiled with gcc 3, rather than the 2.x variant that shipped with 10.1
1. When a gene sequence is patented is STIFLES scientific research and prevents people from being able to do research on gene sequences that, in the end, could benefit mankind. Can you imagine having to pay a royalty in order to work on a cure for cancer? This is BAD

Good God! I would think half of UseNet's posts fromt he 80s could be used as prior art!
Has the patent been issued, or is this just the patent application?
There are enough LEMMINGS willing to pay. Sane people realize that tickets cost way too much.
Yeah well, why the hell do you think that tickets cost so damn much? I can't get a sporting event ticket with even half decent seats for less than $60-70. Why?
