Pennsylvania recently passed the "No Calls Please" law, where, if you register with the state, you are added to a do not call list and Telemarketers have to download the list and remove you from their database if you're on it. Adding yourself to the list is free!
When a telemarketer actually does call me, I explain to them about the law. A lot of telemarketers actually tell me they don't believe me. I then ask to speak the supervisor on duty because I need to get the companies name and address in order to report them to my attorney general so they can be fined $5000 for disturbing me. They usually hang up real fast and don't bother me any more.
What we really need is an active law NO ONE in PA can receive telemarketing calls unless they ADD themselves to a list.
1. They are comparing WEB servers. These are not app servers, or file servers. The total number of web servers in your enterprise is not same as the app servers.
2. They claim Linux is cheaper that Windows due to licensing costs. I think it's cheaper because of lack of downtime and less time spent on the phone with the vendor trying to fix a problem. Downtime alone is what makes me HATE MS Exchange as a product. The 2000 release may be better, but the 5.5 release was nothing but a headache.
Personally, I like Linux, but NOTHING beats a Novell server for a general purpose file server. There is no one OS that will serve your enterprise needs. It's as simple as that. Novell makes EXCELLENT file server. Linux make great web and database servers. If you want your e-mail to never crash, run Lotus Domino on an AS400 Server.
Remember, Microsoft wants us to believe one OS can do it all and do it all well. Well, Linux can do it all. But it can't do it all well. But no matter what it does, it still does it better than anything Microsoft has out there.
Well, you are correct. I guess the real point I was making is IF you don't like what they did with Gnome/KDE/X then you're free to change it to whatever you like. GNU/Linux distributions are completely customizable. Heck, if you don't like either KDE of GNOME, feel free to install GnuSTEP and go crazy.
Personally I think it would be nice for GnuSTEP to be completed. Then we could have apps that run on X as well as Aqua on MacOSX.
I tend to wonder if all the Gnome/KDE effort would be better spent on GnuStep. Just my humble opinion. I could be wrong....
I sought medical help and was directed to a program called brag. Now I can happily download all the alt.binaries that I want at about 2:00 AM in the morning.
So, now I get my binaries AND I get my life back!
It's amazing how much porn you can download in just a day!:-)
Seriously, though, there a LEGITIMATE binary sites out there. I don't download software. What need is there when Linux comes with everything I need. I don't have a single piece of computer equipment in my house with Windows on it any more.
I don't believe in counter offers much. I went to an old employer and asked for a well deserved raise and was told no. That they didn't feel that I was worth what I was aking. The manager actually told me "If you had another offer on the table, then we'd know you were worth that much." So, I went out and came back with another offer. The guy chuckled and matched the offer cause I had played his hand and won. Well, I simply used my new salary to turn around ask for more money from the next job and left shortly after that.
A lot of times, they'll counter offer so they can keep you on until they can hire your replacement at their pace.
BEWARE THE COUNTER OFFER. I would only consider it, if I asked for a raise first and was turned down.
I big chunk of Apple IS NOT owned by MS. I don't know where people get this notion. MS made a 25 million dollar investment in Apple back in 97 to end a bunch of lawsuits Apple had against them. The investment gave then 25 million dollars in NON VOTING shares. It was all a beautifully crafted move by Steve Jobs to get a new cash influx into the company. So, Apple got the money they needed from Microsoft, without giving them one ounce of control.
And now the Apple-Microsoft partnership is over. Notice the UNIX ads with Netscape in the Dock, instead of IE? How about the fact that Apple now uses Chimera at presentations? The fact that iChat talks with AIM instead of MSN? Microsoft really has no control of Apple, and never did.
I'm sure Apple is worth a heck of lot more than 25 million dollars these days.
Hmm... Perhaps someone should tell Apple BSD is dead. If I understand your post, Apple isn't selling a single Mac with OS X (whose core is BSD). Heck in a year or two, there will be more Macs out there with BSD on them than all the Linux servers in the US.
I guarantee you all these BSD guys will come on over and get jobs at Apple and all of the sudden Darwin will be running great on Intel hardware as well as Macs, and we will have a new BSD king.
Soon as GUNStep gets done and runs on Darwin, we essentially will have Darwin with the Cocoa APIs.
Oh, and when it the last time you called Microsoft with an issue you have with IE that you couldn't resolve?
The #1 tool for IE is Microsoft's knowledgebase. And guess what, Netscape and Mozilla have one to. it's called bugzilla.
Making guidelines that make sure people know that they have to buy the latest and greatest OS from Microsoft in addition to that donated PC that came with Windows 95 is just another indication that something bad is going on in Redmond. Think about it. 1. Product activation prevents people from installing office and Windows XP on multiple computers in the same household. 2. Microsoft is now telling chartitables that if they want the latest OS they need to buy it, cause it probably did not come with the PC that was donated. 3. Microsoft is forcing users to upgrade to Office XP, by taking away the upgrade price if they don't upgrade by a certain time.
This all does not bode well.
Something else that is interesting. Did you know that Microsoft does not pay ANY dividends to it's shareholders? What this means is that they don't have to put their money where their mouth is. They can claim they made 11 billion dollars last quarter and don't need to send out divident checks to back that claim up.
All this evidence together makes you really think those boys in Redmond are COOKING THE BOOKS bigtime, and they're hurting real bad.
I expect at this time next year to see Bill Gates sitting in front of Congress pleading the fifth.
Here comes Enron all over gain.....
Just imagine the lawsuit if this thing was released in the US! The RIAA would go nuts!
Still waiting for the day when they figure out the DMCA is a bad thing and repeal it, or have the Supreme Court overturn it for violating freedom of speach.
The reason why MathML is not enabled is because the current MacOS X builds are not UNIX native. They are MacOS9 code that is carbonized. This is done because it quicker for the developers to generate OS X build. I'm sure once 1.0 comes out that they'll work on other OS X builds like ther Mach-o builds and Chimera and release them to replace the current Mozilla build.
Having done contract work for Comcast, I can confirm that their ISP project internally is called JumpStart, and I am pretty sure they're using some Linux servers on their back end. I can attest to that, but there were a whole lot of internal job postings looking for Linux guys.

Let them have what ever interface they want. This is Linux. You are free to change it.

You know, I just downloaded RedHat 7.3 from Red Hat Network today. 6 CDs have got to be an easy 3 GB right there.
Ok, tell me where it says I have a 5 GB download cap at Comcast? I was not informed of any cap by Comcast.
It's amazing how much porn you can download in just a day! :-)

You know, they're doing this just to keep the JAVA 1.3.1 and 1.4 VMs out. This way Windows comes with the old Java 1.1 VM. This blows. Andy
