I watched the D8 interview with Jobs. Basically, he pointed out that they have been cutting off technology before the rest of the market many times in the past. Floppy disks, various external ports, etc. He argued that Flash was just another technology they didn't see a future for.

  2. Re:Calling it now on Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Arrives For Android · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think their position on Flash is a strategic one. Even if Flash does start performing well some time in the future, the Flash content out there isn't very well adapted to small screens, and it's probably much more difficult to do so with Flash than with normal web standards. Apple wants a good experienec, and they may not be convinced that Flash will give users a good experience even if the performance is reasonably good.

That's a good point. Hardware acceleration is probably going to help a lot, but will it be enough? If anyone can dig up info on whether HW acceleration is mandatory for Flash and Android 2.2, that might shed some light on this..

What about general performance? Does it lag as badly as early previews of Flash on Android seem to indicate? Is the Nexus One officially supported by Flash?

A lot of people are excited about Flash on Android, but what about the performance? My impression from reading various previews is that it's rather slow and laggy. Have they improved on things, or were these people running Flash on devices that aren't supposed to be running it in the first place?

I must admit that I want Flash to go away and be replaced by open web standards, but at the same, time I would like to be able to view all web content on my mobile phone.

So did they manage to get decent performance out of this thing, or is this still more of a tech demo than anything else?

The problem isn't Twitter. The problem is people reading only what boring people have to say, and then whining about boring people on Twitter. Instead of whining, correct the problem. Only follow people who say something interesting.

I used to play the NES, SNES and all that. I spend hours playing the good old games. I could play through the first few Mega Man games blindfolded. I knew every secret and trick in Mario games, including Super Mario World. Knew the Zeldas on NES and SNES like the back of my hand.

    Then I stopped playing.

I guess I grew up. Or something.

I've always felt like a gamer at heart, but I came to realize that even though games are looking prettier and prettier, they are feeling rather empty. Maybe it was just the thrill of being a kid discovering new worlds that hooked me, and now that I'm an adult I don't have the time to be sucked in anymore. I certainly don't have the time to play games all day.

Until the Wii came, I did keep an eye on the gaming market, but I definitely wasn't interested in getting a new console.

The Wii was the first console in many years that created a small spark of desire inside of me to go back to playing games.

I think, as someone said, that Nintendo isn't competing with Sony and Microsoft these days, as much as they are competing with disinterest.

But... Am I a casual gamer? I suppose I am, now. But I used to be "hardcore". Nintendo managed to drag me back into gaming, at least partially. I think that might be part of their success -- winning over disinterested traditional gamers such as myself.

For all the bashing of "casual" games for the Wii, didn't any of you notice that, in, fact games of the past were usually quite simplistic? They may have been hard to play all the way through, but they certainly weren't the monsters of bloated cutscenes and story lines we have today.

Frankly, I'm getting sick of the whining about "casual games destroying the market". Accessible games means that people like me get to pick them up and play, and not have to invest many hours a day to do so. Ok, I admit I played through Super Mario Galaxy and managed to unlock Luigi. But it just doesn't feel like the "good old days".

It can be frustrating for the rest of us, but personally, I understand it if someone would want to work on something they love working on, and make money at the same time.

You ask why they won't submit the code to Android, but then their differentiation would be gone.

And I don't think the goal should be for all phones to have identical UIs. Variety means choice. If people find that the Sense UI is better, that's one of the things that may compel them to buy a HTC phone. If they find it to be worse, HTC will lose business. Other companies can go for stock Android, or make their own custom UI. Thus, there is competition and choice. Not just one stock Android phone vs another stock Android phone.
