  2. Re:Mangling The Story on Sci Fi Gives Green Light To "Children of Dune" · · Score: 1

I've tried to stay away from seeing too much,
but I'm hearing that they've "expanded" the role of Arwen Evenstar (Liv Tyler) .. And one of the
commercials seems to show her drawing a sword. There is only one place in the books that I'm aware of where she is even remotely connected with a sword, and it wasn't a combat situation (yes, i'm a big tolkien geek, sue me ;) .. I'd love to see a Very faithful rendition, and not one changed to fit the pay-for-name headliner actress of the day. Silliness .. just silliness.

  3. Mangling The Story on Sci Fi Gives Green Light To "Children of Dune" · · Score: 2, Interesting

Hopefully they won't mangle the story as badly
as they did the first time. Am I the only one
that would like to see producers / screenwriters /
directors *stop* inserting their creative fancies
in to classic works such as Dune or LOTR? ..

And, if anyone out there for the SciFi channel
is reading - please - don't dress the mentats
up as a bishop from a five and dime chess set ..
they really deserve a little more than that,
I think. Tho both attempts at making a movie
from the book (the DeLaurentis and the recent
SciFi) took quite a few liberties with the story,
I think the DeLaurentis productions costume work
was excellent. The SciFi production looked like
nothing so much as a third grader's costume
    party.

Blah .. and now they're going to mangle LOTR.

  5. OSS in The Real World on Open Source Course for Managers? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Assuming you are up against the "free" prejudice (nothing good is free), one of main points of emphasis would probably be the quick release / report / revise cycle that a successful, widely used OSS product enjoys. Major (or minor) flaws are quickly discovered that might not appear during even a rigorous bug-hunt by the developers. Given that OSS makes the source available, any customization needs can be handled in-house if necessary - flexibility is the key .. would you rather wait for a corporate entity to raise itself from the rust to release a patch or a new revision, or adopt an OSS product for use that allows you as granular a control as you need? Without any overriding reason to use a non-OSS product, the choice would seem obvious, all other things being equal.

  6. CS and the career on What Do You Do When CS Isn't Fun Any More? · · Score: 1

This is something that a lot of us are facing these days, I'd expect. For so many years for me, computers and technology were a source of joy in and of themselves, but there really Is only so far you can go with them as a self-contained entity before it all begins to feel fairly broken-recordish. My suggestion would be to change your major, and apply your CS knowledge to your new field of study, if theres anything else that interests you that you can relate your skills to. Computers are, after all, only a tool. I think it interesting that the world (or at least America) is finally hopping somewhat off the 'net bandwagon (has anyone else been screaming about the idiocy of the banner-ad economy since it began? .. i'm guessing i'm not the only one). Good luck to you - finding a career that you enjoy is very important. For the moment given the market today, I'm going to stick with CS .. but should the rug come out from under me, I'll likely bite the bullet, head to school and pursue a career in genetics .. an excellent discipline for a programmer if they enjoy it ;)

  7. CDE on Solaris 9 Will Be Updated WIth Gnome 2.0 · · Score: 3, Informative

It depends on what you're after and what you have the time for. CDE is simple and doesn't seem to get in the way. Having been forced to use either CDE or OpenWindows for several years, and having found OpenWindows to be a royal pain, CDE was what i stuck with. I use KDE now, because it most closely resembles CDE for me. I've tried some of the more feature-laden (or ridden) window managers - tho some of my acquaintences may grouse and complain that i don't give things a fair chance, i require two things from a window manager : that it doesn't make me use the mouse any more than necessary, and that it doesn't force me to eat up screen real-estate with whizbangs and visual funthings. I'm definitely a terminal power-user, and would operate in text-mode exclusively were it not that I require a web browser (feh). If you gave me a choice between Gnome and CDE, i'd take CDE, just because i'm not convinced spending X amount of time learning how to deal with another environment will buy me anything - it certainly won't improve my productivity, as I am definitely of the opinion that GUI's hamper productivity (unless you're doing something visual).
