    Best distro eh? Thats just *begging* to begin a flame war!

    Personally I like the idea of United Linux. There's no reason that all Linux venders can't use the same base for rpm compatibility, etc. It'll hapen one way or another. Do you want one company to control the standards, or a shared effort?

    There are probably very few viruses that only the author knows about; the number of different viruses in the wild is actually very, very low.

    And people have discussed using so-called "anti-viruses" but there are too many legal issues to deal with. If people just patch their boxes, problem solved.

    To be libel, it has to meet certain conditions. First you have to know you are lying and it has to do actual damage. So, you etll me how much money this is costing source forge?

    No, not at all. IT's a private company, and they aren't accusing them of anything illegal. I could make software and block every site with the word "the" in the URL. Or block all sites and give the reason as "This site has content which I want to block."

    I recommend not jumping to sue every chance you get, there are too many lawsuits anyways.

    The real solution is, of course, for companies to drop their contracts and un-installing the software.

    It's hard to get her to understand that a class website is first and foremost a way to convey information, and secondly entertaining. She likes to have 1200*1600 resolution pictures of Lord of the Rings characters all over, piocked a color scheme of green-on-black, and uses ALL custom fonts.

    Maybe I should buy her this book, heh.

    Yea... more likely than not, they're probably paying an intern $5/hour to scan the 'net for violations, and then send "fill-in-the-blank" e-mails to any "violating" site. Glad to see a reasonable response, and thank for all your work, it is appreciated.

    Do *not* find the lowest prices on eahc part and use that to spec your system. The absolute worst thing you can do is "cheap out" on parts like RAM, motherboard, and the case. You'll end up with a potentially buggy system that is hard to maintain.

    Make sure you only buy *retail* packages and keep all receipts in a folder in case you need to RMA a bad part.

    It may cost 10-20% more, but if you do these two simple things, your overall value goes way up for building your own system.

    No offense, but that reminds me of when I thought that nuclear reactors somehow transformed uranium into electricity. I was so disappointed to learn it was just making heat...

    But anyways, there's no good way to "beam" energy from the moon. Lasers? Microwaves? Photon streams? None of them would work, but it has nothing to do with greedy oil companies, it has to do with physics.

    It's well known that you use Linux in your mega clusters. I was wondering if you have ever been approached by Microsoft, Sun, or HP in an effort to switch to their proprietary OSes.

    I can't imagine that you haven't. It must have been a huge decision to invest in one technology, so are you satisfied with what you have?

    There is nothig in US law that says a monopoly is illegal. What is illegal is to use the advantage of a monopoly harm other businesses.

    If you make a great product and everyone only buys that, there's nothing illegal about it.

    So, I rememebr hearing about all this what, two years ago? When Rambus was going to the "the" definitive memory solutions. While DDR is certainly very successful, Rambus is still the premier memory technology. Now, it's always been clear to me that they've done this illegally.

    I wonder, if they persued this earlier if we wouldn't see Rambus out right now. DDR, IMHO, is the better, cheaper solution. A small push against Rambus two years ago might have been enough to force them from the market.

    Ah.. I see...
    I'm prety sure there are automatic update agents for Mandrake, but I'll have to check on that. I know there are update *programs* out there, but whether or not the users use them (just like Windows Update)

    Have you ever used Mandrake? The default install is very secure, if I rmember right FTP, telnet, etc are all disabled by default. Anyways, is it any worse than yet another MS computer out there to be infected by nasty e-mail viruses?

    I guess beign scared by change is one thing, but I'm glad Walmart and Mandrake are attempting to bring some choice.

    you're missing my point, I in no way stated that DVDs made VHS tapes drop from $65 to the $8 they are now. My point is that VHS has dropped due to DVD (Seriously, before DVD could you ever find a new release hit movie for under $30? Now they're about $15! Older movies are $5).

    But it works both ways, DVDs lower VHS prices, and the low price of VHS forced DVDs to have lower prices. It's a simple economic principal, dealing with "substitute goods."

    Yes, it makes sense. But take a look at my original argument, I was addressing this statement:
    "competition goes down due to low demand"

    Which I'm sure you'd agree with me, is a misleading at best, totally false at worst statement.
