I have a problem with people having to say "I am not a Lawyer" all the time. I don't care if you are a lawyer or not, you are a person.
I like to think that a person can think for themselves. As a person who can think for themselves, i can make decisions about what is right or wrong in this world. If i see something that is wrong, i will do what i can to see that it is justified. When i look at the laws that are passed lately, and the judgements comeing from our courts, i see a great wrong being done. I don't care about the fine print in some obscure copywright law that could insinuate that the founders of this nation would think in one way or another. I want what is right.
People in general, and humanity are being trodden upon by money, politics, companies and government. What should be looked at, especially in this case, is whether the world in general would be a better place if SCO would own Linux (and could supposedly benefit research), or if Linux stayed free to all, and distributed in the way it was before (and thus benefitting the entire world's population, given they're looking for such an OS).
What is the best answer, what will the judges choose? Sadly, I believe that they will look at arcane laws, and not set a precedence of their own. They won't look at waht is truly wrong or right in this world, but rather at facts that they have been taught: Previous court cases, and technicalities. The outlook is dismal my friends, but what are we to do?
And this book review is of interest to nerds WHY EXACTLY? The reviewer makes a comparison to the lead character of this novel and a supporting character in a technology-based cartoon and that's enough to get this accepted on slashdot? WTF? This book has nothing to do with technology or nerds or anything that nerds care about!
This has about as much relevance on slashdot as Martha Stewart's latest "Cooking Simplistic Crap For the Masses" book.
Engineers deal with business too. Do you think that every geek/nerd sits in a cube all day, working on crap, and never has to manage? Please, don't feed me that.

Also, you'd think they'd want a variety of O/S's, ect, for security purposes.

My bro-in-law is a lawyer, went to the law school where i'm an undergrad at. I'd probably just do that, as i am not someone who looks for a big-name as valued.
I am running out of money, fast, so i don't know what i'd be able to do for those 3 years. I was thinking of perhaps working for a couple years, then going back to school for another degree, perhaps law, depending on where i want to be.
Anyway, i laughed at another post where someone mocked your name. Thanks for the laugh today at work (co-op job), i needed it
As Law and Technology are two fields with little in common, what kind of real-world working knowledge do IP lawyers have? Do they simply prosecute/defend cases based on what their told by a handful of "experts" or do they actually know how to use the technologies in question. Is there a call for more Engineers-turned-lawyer for cases such as this? I am about to finish my bachelor's in EE, and am thinking of law school. Thanks.

Fascinating, isn't it?
More than fascinating... anyone who follows yro.slashdot or any copywright laws could pull some very helpful court decisions from this one statement alone. Heck, it sort of infers that P2P is legal, especially with copywrighted works. Obviously, that wouldn't stand up in another case, but it's very interesting nevertheless.
And the winner is.........The FIC ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. We compared these cards in every category we could think of and in the end, we saw better performance overall from the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Did the FX 5900 fail to impress us? No, not at all. We believe both cards are worthy of any good system but we do have to tip our hats to the excellent performance that the Radeon 9800 Pro has showed us here today.
But it looked pretty damn close in most of the benchmarks. Interesting that in 3DMARK, the FX 5900 ran away with it. Hmmmm.. Oh well, I doubt 5% of the people who post comments on this are going to buy one soon anyway. I know i'm not in the market.
This isn't a problem because most people have extras of the body parts used for most biometric schemes. For example, you probably a large supply of fingers (about ten), so it doesn't matter if a few get compromised. Similarly, if you have two eyes, it's not a big deal if your retinal print becomes known to bad guys.
(P.S. Please no replies from humor-impaired folks.)
I don't get it. The way you're talking isn't in a standard joking format at all. Maybe you Canadians have a different sense of humor?

Windows has obviously been trying for the last couple years to control every electronic medium it can get its hands on. And, everything it touches, turns to proprietary. And with the number of MS machines out there, and with the direction the government is running (allowing corporations to be police, ala *AA), I am fearful that MS will be able to dominate e-mail as a whole.
I can imagine MS trying to persuade the Gov't to mandate MS technology to protect against spam. I find this laughable at first, but given how well the US gov't understands technology, i find it quite plausible.
Gates is jumping on a bandwagon, where there is already public support. It's what he needs, public support. The tide has been turning against him, with poor xbox sales, Linux becoming better and better, OpenOffice closing the gap, and losing in the server market. He's deserate to gain some public recognition, and spam is an easy target. Be wary of the Vole, for he knows exactly what he's doing.
While i am forced to use MS for academic, work and extracurricular purposes, I am on a lookout soon for a point. This point is going to to be HUGE. Where useability and ease of use come together to create a Linux and OSS Office product that competes directly with MS's systems for the everyday user, millions will flock to the cheap alternative. It's coming, and Billy knows it. And he's doing everything in his power to prevent it.

There's some new stuff in there. Apparantly, they insinuated that even Microsoft and Apple are not immune to being sued, though they have not taken action yet. Perhaps if they get money from IBM, they'll snowball down the chain of OS's, using the previous court cases, gaining billions as they go to fund the lawyers? We'll see
Also, it seems they've been searching for this sort of IP infringement for a year now. Was it in an earlier article that I saw that the CIO or something of SCO has a history of using IP to extort money in this fashion? If so, he's been planning this attack for a while, and i'd be surprised if he didn't have series of plans if things go/don't go his way. Very scary, for everyeone.
And, I want to say, even though you may be a huge corporation, serving your own ends, please help fight SCO. They are not simply attacking IP, but humanity's well-being. The future of computing could be as bleak as the Matrix's blackened sky if SCO has its way.
In case of GM'd crops (resistance to pests etc.) the modified organism could well be superior to the wildtype. But even if an advantage is introduced, its still questionable if replacing the wild type with the improved version is a bad thing.
Who cares if GM'd corn or soybeans are better than old ones? Don't you realize that corn and soybeans are entirely domesticated, and can't survive without our cultivation? If you walk through a forrest or meadow, there isn't any corn or soybeans there. They can't survive against wild foliage.
So basically, any GM'd product, animal or plant, would not survive long enough to make any impact on our natural ecosystem. And, yes, i am a farmer.
Negatives? Windfarms are, in my experience, very beautiful, quiet, aesthetically pleasing things.
You are talking about some of the richest, most pompous, uptight, annoying people in the world. If you put a poster in your window, that doesn't conform to what they think you should have, you get dragged before the local council, and possibly fined. It's stupid.
