    Well...

2600 may be first published in the States, but now the culture and those who believe in the freedom to hack - not only on 'puters but hacking ANY system and device - is all over the world.

So what if the US supreme court decides to deny 2600 a right of hearing ?

The publisher may close down the 2600 mag in the States, but heck, the world is NOT YET under the control of US justice system. We can continue to do whatever we do in China, France, as well as Argentine or Uganda.

To hell with the US justice system. 2600 _will_ live on, no matter what those idiots on the bench think.

This is not to say that there is no "Chinese devils", of course, there are. But in terms of skill, numbers and resources, the Chinese can't even come close to those from the States.

But individually, if you really want to know who has the most experience - Those from Russia (or the block formerly known as USSR) are the most experienced.

I've personal experience with Russian hackers. I'm a sysadmin, and I pride myself on making my Linux machines secured, but no matter how "secure" I made my machine, those Ruskies always find ways to hack into them.

Oh, I've traced hacking attempts too, there're a lot from China, the States, Israel, Europe, Africa, Asia and Russia, it's almost always the Ruskies who got through the layers and layers of "security features" I've set.

Even "honeypot" can't stop the Ruskies.

The one thing I've learnt from these experience is that I ain't gonna do funny things to the Ruskies. I only have my respect for them, even when they are blackhatters.

  10. Please Read The Microsoft "Case Study" on Peruvian Congressman vs. Microsoft FUD · · Score: 2

If you ever wonder if using Microsoft's product will actually "save you money", vs using Linux, wonder no more.

Please read the NEW "case study" published by Microsoft.

    It's at

    www.microsoft.com/business/casestudies/b2c/micro so ft_hardrock.asp

Among interesting "facts" in the "case study", here is a little snapshot ...

"We wanted to offer additional Web-based applications for accessing detailed financial
data and communicating with our stores, but the lack of security and functionality in the
Linux platform meant we would have to develop everything from scratch."

"In March 2000, Hard Rock Cafe standardized on the Microsoft platform to lower its total cost of
    ownership."

"Since we migrated to Windows 2000, we've been able to rapidly deliver the tools and applications
needed to reduce costs and streamline the way we do business."

"We've only had two developers working on our intranet--the same number we had working on the
Linux platform--and the Microsoft platform has enabled them to deliver upward of 50 applications
over the last year. We're definitely getting more results for our development dollars now."

"In the past, new menus required sending a large amount of materials to all our stores--
recipes, food display guidelines, and so on. Now that we can do this via our intranet, we're
saving upward of $20,000 per year for just this one task."

Since you have reached here, let me tell you that the "case study" by Microsoft is not something coming out of thin air. In fact, Microsoft has named names - in this case, Hard Rock Cafe (HRC).

The funny thing about the "case study" is the claim that using Windows 2000 HRC actually "saved" money !

And then the HRC's IT described Linux as suffering from "the lack of security and functionality" is indeed intriguing.

Digging some more on the thing and we find that the HRC IT department, under their Linux deployment, opted to have their ENTIRE network to run under ONE PASSWORD.

Yes, I kid you not. Read the article !

This only shows the "capabilities" and the "wisdom" of those working in HRC's IT department.

I too, am in the IT field, and I for one, am horrible at what those two HRC guys are doing. If I were their boss, they would have shown the door long, long time ago.

When people talking about "Tech Support", most often forget about the "Built-In Tech Support".

So what's that "Built-In Tech Support" all about ?

    Intuitive-ness !

That is, something akin to MacIntosh's GUI, or (once upon a time) Compaq's way of packaging their hardware in a box.

If a company takes great care on the "Built-In Tech Support", that is, make the unpacking, and installing process INTUITIVELY, as the case of the (once upon a time) Compaq, or the intuitive GUI of MacIntosh, the need for EXTERIOR Tech Support (that is, the call in, hand-held session Tech Support) will be lessen.

It's often the tech developers' fault that the tech support comes at the high level need. That is because, the developers don't care enough about how their product will do to the users, that the users got confused and / or annoyed, then they (the users) call in and screaming at the poor Tech Support people.

I've participated in many software projects and developed enough softwares on my own to know that if you DO NOT CARE ABOUT HOW YOUR SOFTWARE WILL APPEAL TO THE USERS, you will get TONS AND TONS of ANGRY USERS, demanding to know HOW THE HELL THIS WORK, and WHY THE HELL YOU MAKE YOUR SOFTWARE SO DARN DIFFICULT TO USE / UNDERSTAND ?!

One time there were people (users) demanding why my software runs so SLOW, and after asking the users why they say my software runs "SLOW", I came to realize that the users EXPECT everything to appear on the screen, AT ONCE !

I learned my lesson ... now, I will NOT let my users to WAIT for any information. Even when my software is busy cruching numbers at the background, on the screen (foreground) I will LET the users see SOME RESULT.

I know, it's kinda cop out, but if that means making users happy, I will do it.

In addition, letting users see SOMETHING ON THE SCREEN rather than wait for the ENTIRE RESULT AT ONCE is part of the Built-In Tech Support.

My software is no longer consider "SLOW", because the users get to see "SOMETHING" on sceen. It's little stuff like this that matters.

Then came the BIY (Built it yourself) Personal Computer. Those hacking it were pointed haired computer scientists.

Now, we have MILLIONS of "Computer Literates" coming out of the colleges all over the world, and resulting in many untold thousands having difficulties in finding work !

    Now we have this report.

If you look at Computer Technology as commodity, as it already is, you will know that in the future, there won't be so much DEMAND for those who are "Computer Literate".

    Look at farming.

How many farmers are needed to operate the farms ?

There may be millions of cows, but it won't take one million of farmers to raise one million of cows.

    Same with Computer Technology.

In the future, computer technology will be everywhere - embedded, Internet, whatever.... but the DEMAND for those who run and/or create these things will be LESS than what it is today.

    Why ?

    Look at HTML.

Used to be that if you want to run a website, you gotta know how to code HTML.

Today, the only requirement for one to set up a website is to know how to click, and what to click.

It's ironic ... The progress of Computer Technology obliterate the need for those who INVENT / CREATE the technology in the first place.

In other words, the future is NOT BRIGHT.

Forget the report. Whatever the report tells us, it's from Microsoft.

Of course Microsoft wants the world to believe that the world is BRIGHTER THAN BEFORE... only in that way, the world will CONTINUE TO BUY EXPENSIVE SOFTWARES from Microsoft.

If the world knows that the future ain't bright no more, the world will NOT PAY THE HIGH PRICE for the CRAPPY STUFFS from Microsoft.
