EE is more towards the hardware side while Comp Sci is more on the software side
And I've met with brilliant folks from both the EE and the Comp Sci, and some of them even have earned both degrees (bachelor Comp Sci, master/phd EE, for example)
The geometric growth rate of the human population is NOT a consequence of technology.
While you may be right that the geometric growth rate of the human population is not a CONSEQUENCE of technology, I would like to add that technology _does_ play AN IMPORTANT ROLE in the whole scheme of things.
"Modern humans have been around for about 2.2 million years. By the dawn of the first millennium AD, estimates place the total world human population at between 150 â" 200 million, and 300 million in the year 1,000"
"At the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the mid 1700s, the worldâ(TM)s human population grew by about 57 percent to 700 million."
"It reached one billion in 1800."
"The birth of the Industrial Revolution altered medicine and living standards, resulting in the population explosion that would commence at that point and steamroll into the 20th and 21st centuries.
"In only 100 years after the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the world population would grow 100 percent to two billion people in 1927 (about 1.6 billion by 1900)."
I never said anything about "technology powerhouse" that is overpopulated
I said, it's technology that have rendered many diseases that previously killed a lot of human being no longer so lethal, and as a consequence, many human beings everywhere (not only those from the super powerhouse) get to live longer
How much land in the United States alone is sparsely populated and in fact owned by the Federal Government? Do your own research, don't believe me. Go on genius, I dare you!
What exactly do you want, AC?
You want to cut down all the trees ?
You want to turn all those "sparsely populated land" into densely populated and highly polluted cities ?
if everybody could get together and hash out a single thing including the best points of CUDA, OpenCL and this new HSA thing (how many times must we invent this particular wheel?) we'd probably all be better off.
This lies the irony
The more "committee" we set up, the more wheels get re-invented, and, this is the most important part, the programming community ends up waiting, and waiting, and waiting, with no end in sight
The Intel X86 architecture became successful partly because it offers the programming community to tap into its raw power
If the Intel X86 architecture hides itself behind layers upon layers of hardware/software obfuscations, I do not think it would be as successful as it is, today
That is exactly why I ask for the opening up of the innards of the GPU engines, and let us, the programmers, do wonders with it
Presumably, from the standpoint of the "Get the Facts" site, the only reason the European public dislikes ACTA is because they don't have, well, the facts.
Like the way a rape victim's only basis for fighting back is that they don't realize how good the rape will feel if they just accept it.
In other words...
These Pro-Acta people are laying out the "facts" to the EU people, telling them to enjoy the shove, even if they don't need 'em ?
One of the main thing the programming community needs is getting to the innards of GPUs
We can sense the raw power of the GPU engines, the parallel structures, but, so far, there is no way we can tap into all those power buried inside with assembly language
We are forced to jump through official hoops such as CUDA (from Nvidia) and OpenCL (from ATi)
I am not saying that CUDA or OpenCL are craps, but they should let us, the programming community, the option of getting to the very guts of the graphic engines inside the GPU itself, with assembly language or C
My only hope is someone actually come up with a thing that works like this ---
You are inside a car. The minute the driver starts the engine the driver's cell phone automatically transferred to a recorded message "I am driving now, Stop calling me, Please !"
As if we believe in the fairy tale that someone has gone all the troubles (and the associated costs) to file a patent RESTRICTING access to specific academic texts to only those who are authorized that THEY WON'T CHARGE ANYTHING ??
EE and Comp Sci, while related, aren't the same
EE is more towards the hardware side while Comp Sci is more on the software side
And I've met with brilliant folks from both the EE and the Comp Sci, and some of them even have earned both degrees (bachelor Comp Sci, master/phd EE, for example)
... I did not graduated with a comp sci bachelor degree
I graduated with a EE degree, simply because the courses in comp sci in my university was more towards software and I was more interesting in hardware

You have a problem with reading comprehension?

I call bullshit.

The best way to avoid making mistakes is not doing anything at all.
Unfortunately it's not that easy. My biggest mistakes have consisted of not doing things.
Even someone as smart as "the Bard" was deeply troubled by that. He left us "... to be, or not to be ...", didn't he ?
I am not a luddite, but I still gotta say this ...
The technologies that we have today have given us a lot of good things
It has made our lives "better", in the sense that a lot of diseases that previously can kill us, nowadays are not that lethal anymore
But, the consequence is that the world human population has exploded
20 years ago, there were less than 5 Billion people
Now, 7 Billion people, and, as we speak, the figure keeps going up and up
Our planet simply can't support it
Either we human completely depleted the planet and we die off - and in the process a lot of other plants and animals wiped off as well,
Or ...
There will be another full scale global war, that ends up cutting down the human population to more manageable size
In other words, the "world peace" that we have today is but only an illusion - our technologies are delaying the what will have to come, ultimately

First thing first,
Very very smart people do not post stupid "foist post" comments
Plus, very very smart people do not hide behind "AC", posting garbage trying to stink up Slashdot

Can't argue with most of what you've written, but ...
1. Since when are the competent hackers in government?
There are, and a lot of 'em who are working for gov are very competent
Can't tell you how I know, tho
Keep in mind that "computer science" is not the science of building computers
Keep in mind that Lady Ada Lovelace didn't take any part in the "building computer" phase
The role of Lady Lovelace is in the "Programming"
Do read up Lady Ada Lovelace when you have the time
Easy, just use my patented DPUTFP method.
Don't Pick Up The Fucking Phone.

I'm moving to Norway
Remember to take plenty of supply of those "blue pills"
You'll need 'em !!
7 itself isn't actually stable - it is. it's used every single day by 1000's of people
Count me in as one of the "1000's" and I've been using E for a long long, and I mean, looonnng time :)
I'm surprised they didn't sample Balmer yelling "Developers!"
Better take away all the chairs !!!
... until he gains employment
After that, that hacker becomes a programmer
I've been in this field for too long, I've seen the same thing happened to many excellent hackers
It does not mean they do not contribute any more once they are on the payroll - it's that somehow money has corroded that hunger / urge to hack
I don't think Alan Turing qualifies as the "Father" of computer science
Long before Alan Turing, Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace had already done incredible things with the Difference Engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Difference_Engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace
No offence to Mr. Turing's fanbois, but we need to give credit to where the credit is truly due
As a web developer, I was surprised to find out they actually offered a useful service for end-user.
Care to list the benefits of Meebo, after being acquired by Google, I mean ?
As if we believe in the fairy tale that someone has gone all the troubles (and the associated costs) to file a patent RESTRICTING access to specific academic texts to only those who are authorized that THEY WON'T CHARGE ANYTHING ??
They think we live in fairy land
We need to bring China in on the ISS.
China was / is specifically banned from joining the ISS program
They're just getting even for gun powder, and paper
.... and compass
Anybody care to provide a link that isn't paywall'd?

Google is always very helpful
Don't you think so?
