um, the current approach is that the MD5 sums are stored on a separate server, many separate servers, in fact. I have nothing against PGP signatures, I'm just saying there's really no need to get hysterical - the current system is still pretty damn difficult to get around.

see a pattern developing? This whole "there is no software" argument is great, but here's a little secret (I feel confident saying this, as I am a developer) - people actually write software! Software that does not currently exist, can come into being through the efforts of mere mortals. Of course a relatively large software company getting into the market has absolutely nothing to do with this...

I am neither a director (who is the person against whom my "hate" is directed), nor am I a graphic artist, so I am not in a position to set an example of good CG. Then again, I do not try to charge people $10 to go see what I create.

My skills notwithstanding, what exactly is the problem? This very bad movie (not my fault, that Lucas blew $300 mil to make a very bad movie) contains some bad CG (again not my fault). There are movies that have some really good CG, and the bar for very high-budget, intensly hyped movies has been set much higher than what we saw in Episode II. I think I am understandibly upset that I've spent money (even if not all that much) and expended time to see people do their job badly.

Hell, I'm not even from the US myself, just happen to be living here for a while, and I'm sorry if I am mean to most of the world, but believe me, an overwhelming majority of them have much bigger problems than not having fucking DSL.

CDs aren't quite what I meant - the portage tree is maintained by the Gentoo team, separately from any of the ftp mirrors you use for the package downloads (updated via rsync, incidentally). So for the attack to succeed, not only do the ftp mirrors have to be compromised, but also the Gentoo tree (and then the attacks would still be caught by the FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc, rather quickly) Certainly this system isn't impregnable, but there's enough redundancy here to make successful attacks rather difficult.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for PGP signatures, it's just that out of the 500+ posts in this thread, around 2/3 have mentioned it, it's probably enough advocacy for one day :)

It's a great idea, though will only work effectively if the checking is done automatically by systems like Portage; and I'm sure it will be implemented not that long from now, it's not like the guys who write this software know less about security than we do ;)
