Thats all folks. It's time we start showing as a community that we're not just a bunch of freeloaders, anarchists & hypocrites.
Future versions of RedHat Linux are expressly "community oriented" - they don't really expect to make any money off of it (nor should they).
Their "Enterprise Linux" line (ES AS and WS) is where they'll be getting the cash from. The best way to support them is to make sure your company (and many a slashdotter is in a position to directly influence this) coughs up the (measly) $1,800 for the licenses, rather than installing the latest bittorrented ISO on their servers.
I thought the number one reason was that we have to acquire alien technology to defend ourselves against the Goa'uld, who are capable of reaching earth in their ships, even if we bury the gate?
Here we go again, the FPS given is an average, meaning that if your action game is running at 30, then there are likely times when you are only getting 10 or less.
Also, getting over 200 FPS is the best way to brag about your awesome hardware and gigantic penis.
Turns out we had a bug in Spry Mosaic that, when it hit an empty IMG tag
That's pathetic - to think there was actually a time when there were browsers which could be crashed with a simple html tag that's missing an attribute.
and users weren't forced to learn the artificial concept of a "file"
Um, artificial as they may be, these so called "files" have been around for some time, in fact long before computers. Users can quite intuitively understand the concepts of "file" and "folder." I really think you are trying to make the difference seem greater than it actually is. (on the user side, that is)
Elephants are all nice and good, but I can't really visualize it until it's converted into Human Genomes (the new trendy unit, Libraries of Congress are soo last millenium).
I know what those extras are for that database, but knowing OSS development paces, I'm sure the same is the same for PostgreSQL
I love this! You are plainly saying that you have no idea what you are talking about, and then go on to make some useless generalizations - bravo.
Postgres is a real database. All those features (almost all, in any case) that Oracle has and MySQL doesn't? Postgres has them. Good replication was one of the last major features that postgres lacked (good full text indexing is another).
I love MySQL to bits for the stuff it's good at, and use it extensively, but you can't just write off all of its shortcomings when it comes to being an application database to "marketing."
Dude, you don't get the entire concept of "beta" do you?
When you fix bugs, you always (always!) introduce new bugs; you release a beta to find and fix the new bugs (and to see if the bug fixes really fixed the old bugs) before you give it to the users.

WTF? We've had to patch that, what, twice? Like, ever? (And the best part is that up2date -u doesn't make me accept 8 different EULAs just to install.

This appears to be "Free as in Annoying," to coin a phrase...

All I know is that my Radeon 9800 makes my vi look damn good!
That's pathetic - to think there was actually a time when there were browsers which could be crashed with a simple html tag that's missing an attribute.
A bit superflous, given the context, isn't it? I mean, there would have to be girls involved.
Oh crap, does this mean that we have to wait for Apple and BSD to die before the music industry finally kicks it? Because that may take a looong time.
In all seriousness, name one religion for which this isn't true.
That's a tough one, we've been struggling with this whole "Christianity" thing for centuries now, and it doesn't look good.
Well, I still want to know who watches the watchmen who watch the watchmen who watch the watchmen...
If only operating systems came with a utility that would convert units for you...

Holy shit dude - complaining about dupe stories is a full time job, if you are gonna whine about dupe comments you'll have to give up sleeping.
Describe this "discontinuous use of slashdot" idea, it intrigues me.
Now, we could itemize all the stuff on the internet, but do you really think it's worth it?
Elephants are all nice and good, but I can't really visualize it until it's converted into Human Genomes (the new trendy unit, Libraries of Congress are soo last millenium).
Are you one of those people who think that "100% humidity" means "really, really heavy rain"?
Well, they don't have service packs as such... you kinda apply patches until the next minor release - could that be why?
And no matter what I do, MS fucks me in the ass. At least we are both consistent.
Let's use this opportunity to finish playing catchup and then surpass them.
Cool! What are you going to be doing?
(Incidentally, is there a single cliche more ridden into the ground than "ready for the desktop"?)
Well give them some time, it's not easy to copy features like dockable panels and virtual desktops.
Strictly speaking, it still doesn't. Using InnoDB tables kills most of the advantages of using MySQL, so what's the point?
