just a nitpick, but the gram (kilogram) is a measure of mass, not weight. I believe weight would need to be measured in newtons, and would depend on factors like the atmospheric pressure at the location of the litre of water...

yes, and as such it is not posix compatible. the sh in /usr/xpg4/bin/sh is, but that doesn't help me when I am trying to write a shell script that works on linux and solaris (#!/bin/sh). i can't user /bin/ksh, because it prbably doesn't exist on linux. i can't use /bin/bash, since it probably doesn't exist on solaris. so I am stuck with the good ol' bourne shell - how's that for standards! most java developers i know would mutiny if you told them to write all their code to java 1.1.8, don't you think.

almost all modern unixes include a /bin/sh that supports posix syntax. solaris doesn't. this is one example of the many things that the engineers at sun have done to intentionally drive me mad.

... or just wait a couple of weeks until nvidia updates their drivers. I'm running FC1 at home, and there's no way I'm upgrading it until there has been a bit of "soak time" for new drivers to come out, and for third parties to update their package repositories. I don't really have time to mess around with a broken system (nor would my wife and kids tolerate it.)

Although we imagine that Linus would not, Microsoft does have a lot of money to offer. You are right, we probably would have heard of it if it had happened, but you should also not underestimate the lengths MS would go to to crush their competition - including buying a developer just to get him to stop working on his project. MS obviously has the balls to hire from Suse, I don't see why they would be ashamed to admit to offereing a job to Linus, even if he turned it down.

Possibly, but I think it would be hard to dispute that removing a project's leader would create problems for the project. Fortunately, the linux kernel team is deep enough that they problably could recover from losing Linus.

Anyhow, that wasn't my point. Microsoft does have a great tradition of buying up the competition, and the article shows that this applies to not only companies, but individuals. Linus is the king in this world, but I could have mentioned others like Alan Cox (who apparrantly has had an offer) or Miguel de Icaza (who would probably consider it ;-)
