Sorry but the best filesystem for high I/O by far IMHO is XFS on SGI Irix. When you run I/O via the distributed filesystem on a san where 40 machines mount to the same filesystem at once.
The thru put is only limited by the speed of your Fibre channel switches and storage arrays. Which is about 2GB/sec in today's standard.
Unfortunately no one has this stuff at home. And quite frankly SGI need to do some major catching up on software anyways.
I don't think it's a question of benchmarks. I have owned both nvidia and ATI cards. Every ATI card has a life span of about 1 year, that's including the new ATI 9800.
I am going back to Nvidia permanently I don't care what the specs are. ATI hardware has a real quality problem out of the box with cheap default fans. ATI software drivers are so bad, they need a new version every month. Nuff said.
People think HP, Novell, IBM, Sun and Walmart are the right partners.
It's actually the applications and storage companies that will make Linux the true competitor. EMC, HDS, Veritas, Oracle. How much do these analysts get paid?
Do you think rebranding linux via IBM and Sun will really help? It just dilute the OS. Linux doesn't need 8000 colors, it needs 8000 different things to add-on. A honda civic won't sell any better if there are 8000 colors to choose from. It will sell better if you have choice of upgraded engines, turbos, exhaust, sun roofs etc etc.
When you see ideas like this, you know the ideas came from people who don't play games. Or big management guns execs who are trying to make some dough.
Listen, the only you give away your IM name is
A.) when you want to join someone's clan
B.) when you want to someone to join your clan
C.) when you are really trying to know someone
In all of the above, I wouldn't want my regular user name to be my AOL IM. As if I don't get enough spam, last thing I need is to be IM spammed by the people I fragged.
You look at windows and Visual Basic and Visual C, those are all anyone would ever need in windows land.
The problem within the linux community altogether. There isn't an undisputed GUI tool. QT is good, but there are too many alternatives that are equally shoulder to shoulder with it.
I have a couple relatives who are extremely nontechnical. Their windows installation has already been plagued by 2 worm viruses this year. When they think virus in windows, they think virus in computers. Basically these viruses are giving computers in general a bad reputation.
I have suggested they try linux. But they are nearly at the point of no return. They fear computer, they fear the hassle, virus scans, repair etc. What's the world coming to.
This is not funny. As people always use young Google to compare with a young M$.
If Gates and Ballmer represent the typical Ivy league tactics turning M$ into a software powerhouse. I am pretty sure these Stanforders will turn Google into an internet powerhouse.
The question now... is not whether they can offer goods. But offering goods to the masses at what cause. Our privacy? Their monopoly? Our freedom of choice? Doesn't everyone have www.google.com as their home page.
I just did my taxes with H&R block. I specifically ask whether there needs to be any Internet purchases claimed etc etc. Basically I am avoiding doing taxes twice / audits etc.
I agree. It's becoming silly to have a new port come out every year with driver problems.
I wouldn't mind seeing a real high-quality port that can be used for 10+ years and can be performed with all purpose. Imagine a USB-like port that can do scsi, network, VGA, and every thing in between.
- Parents complain about ineffective rating systems.
- We make the labels bigger and train EB employees better.
- Parents complain about 1 kid out of 100 sneaking out with a mature game.
- We make better rating systems.
We are fucking pilgrims. The news just showed a couple american contractors dangled and burned publicly in Iraq. Where's the damn label for the news. Parents blame rock music in the 70s, then video games in the 80s, then internet in the 90s.
No no no... lack of common sense is when live ammo is leaked from police headquarters to the streets.
The worse that could happen to a video tape is undecent publicity like Janet Jackson's breast. Alot more things can do harm coming from the police department. Cocain.... I mean.... nevermind.
In that case I am worried. SNES will probably be emulated across many more platforms in the future, Amiga, Novell, casio stop watches.
Everytime a new emulator comes out the US is doomed economically.
Heh Catholic School and Windows. That's like straight out warshipping satan on school grounds.
My neighbor has a michael jackson casette which was degraded over time. The line....
"He He He The way she turns me on".
now sounds like
"He turns me on".
CDs would have just lost the whole line or song.

Heh. I can't even flamebait SCO anymore. Every bad thing that you could say about the organization has already been said.

At least you know you are wasting CPU cycles on SPAM.
We don't know what the hell we are calculating with Seti.
That's nothing. A recruiter in 98 called me once to see if I can provide reference for a friend with 10 years of windows 98 experience.
That's exactly what I thought too. I am starting to think no one knows how to market in the video game industry anymore.

1.) Kings dominate earth
2.) Kings useless, presidents and prime ministers dominate the earth
3.) Presidents and P minister useless, lawyers dominate the earth
4.) Lawyers useless, Geeks dominate earth.
5.) Geeks useless, machines dominate earth.
Here's a list of things linux needs to conquer windows.
1.) cleartype fonts
2.) automatic directX compatibility for games
3.) one solid universal gui
It's a pretty short list, and I just don't think this project is filling the gap just quite yet.

In open source world people blame the author because the code may not come from a corporate entity but an individual.

H&R Block said NO!!

What the hell is wrong with the U.S.
- Parents complain about no rating systems.
- We got a rating systems.
- Parents complain about ineffective rating systems.

I guess if you can't beat Sony with your xbox console and shaq-size controller. You beat them with M$ windows.
As much as I am a Sony fan, competition is damn sweet for consumers.
Only way to keep SCO lawyers away from you is keep your code private like M$.
I am so surprised SCO lawyers didn't try to trademark "you are fired."
Windows 2000 also has a network monitoring tool.
c:\system32\system\netmon\netmon.exe.
It's not going to support 500 protocols like ethereal. But hey, it comes default with windows 2000 without you having to install anything separately.
Ahhh no. The worst game ever was an import Arcade in a pizza shop down my street a while back.
- The game was in some dirty old wooden japanese case with japanese instructions on all buttons.
- The plug outlet was converted from the japanese wall adapters so that it could fit in the wall.
- The game consisted of this arkanoid like paddle except all you do is move the paddle left and right to get attacked by samurai stick figures.
- Monocolor screen + the greasiest joystick I have ever seen.
- It had an american 25 cents slot + yen slot or something.
