First off... getting slimed is damn sure better than getting a riot baton to the head (cops) or an M-16 bullet(USMC). I've treated both injuries, and neither are very nice.
The military wanted this research done for non-lethal stuff because our politicians, in their infinite wisdom, feel the need to use a combat force as police. Ie... haiti, croatia, somalia. Open up on a rioting village with a 50 cal. Your butt will be in front of congress so fast you couldn't believe it. For all of you who worry about it's use. The same things ring true use in the civilian world. It's not like every cop is going to have a hood mounted slime gun. Most likely the vehicles that carry the riot squads to the scene would be equipped with them. If the poop hits the fan, slime 'em and bag em, just like today minus the concussions from batons and fatalities from "rubber" bullets.
Breaking up a violent mob is not impinging on anyones first amendment rights. It is stopping them from being assholes.
Heck... we get good movies in smaller cities. Matter of fact I just went and saw Tron last night, It took me a while to get there on the dirt roads cause my model-t kept getting stuck in the mud and I ran into some guy driving one of them new fangled Gremlins.
As for sushi, we just rangle a dirty ol' catfish out of one of our three rivers and starta chompin.
Ok I admit it. I use M$ software. (I feel like I am in a 12 step program.) I have for the past 10 years or so. I have also used Solaris, AIX, MAC and Linux for about the same time frame. Microsoft has done wonders for the technology field, just as AT&T did with the telecommunications industry prior to them becoming a total monopoly. I doubt any of the fun stuff that is around now would be in use if M$ wasn't around, like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, or Diablo II, or Civilization. Not to mention, sometimes, guess what? I want to write a document, not download, edit, compile, debug, or anything else in order to do so. A freaking document man.
The big problem is that MS has been increasingly volatile towards competitors, partners and competition in the past few years. (Especially since Steve Balmer took over as CEO.) They barge into new technology areas as subtly as a bull in a china shop, do a half ass job while crushing competitors with marketing and money. Meanwhile the entire corporation gets a little more mis-directed because there is one more area to look after.
Split the company up. No collusion between entity's allowed. Make them focus on their respective areas. Office apps on office apps. OS company on OS, etc... Hopefully, this way products will be just that products, not parts of the operating system.
one more thing i forgot... I built some claw thing with the erector set prior to electrocuting myself with it...
The motorized gear thingy-madoodle got caught in my little sisters hair. Stayed there until the next day when my ass-kicking mother finally noticed this little motor sticking off the back of her head.
I tried screwing around with some powered erector thing in the 70's. I electrocuted myself with it a week after it was recalled. Damn toys.
Oh yeah.. I also gave myself a few chemical burns with a home chemistry kit.
Those experiences probably caused the following: I ripped apart all of my old star wars toys... with a stock pile of M80's.

There is one hell of a difference between posting instructions on how to make a home grown fertilizer bomb on a web site that is attempting to incite people to taking down the government and some 40 year old virgin librarian with a technical manual on how to make a hydrogen bomb in the local library. Last I checked, you can buy fertilizer anywhere. U235 and other fun stuff is much harder to come by.
