You cant call NVidia anti-open source. I've been a happy NVidia customer for many years and I've always loved how they Support my Open Source Operating System.
Can you point out the buisness case or value for NVidia to open up their hardware or drivers ?
What I want to know is how is Raven going to do the in game Physics ?
Will we get Quake2's fantastic movement/jumping feeling ?
The thing I love most about Quake2 and what still keeps me playing it (ActionQuake) is exactly that:)
Well.. RedHat distros have you import their GPG key into RPM the first time you run up2date.
Then RPM takes care of the signature checking for us and cries bloody murder when a package isnt signed or is signed incorrectly.
Dude, there was no Fedora Core 2 debacle. The 4K stacks patch went into the vanilla kernel also.
Thanks to the Fedora team, NVidia had a 4K stacs driver much sooner for you vanilla guys.
There is a big difference here. Red Hat does NOT force you to buy an upgrade. If you are so inclined, you can buy their AS/WS/ES line or upgrade your RH8 box to Fedora totally free of charge, with no strings attached.
Not exactly a good example. The C library (libc (glibc)) is always loaded. One copy is in memory serving all applications that are running on the machine (except ofcource programs that for some reason use libc.a)
Then runtime linking only links your program to those few calls in the library you use.
With all due respect, how long do you think it takes to make a working distro like Red Hat's ?:)
I know it's not been long since 8.0 was released, but it's not like they are going to sit on their hands for a few months doing nothing and then throw something together in a week or two and release that.
I'm pretty sure that this beta doesnt mean a new release is coming any time soon.
About the uglyness of the fonts. Im a (proud) Red Hat user and the fontserver that comes with it knows how to handle TrueType fonts.
M$ distributes some TTF fonts for free (ms-webfonts something) plus you can use the TTF fonts from your windows install (you can technicly, but Im not sure legally).
With this setup, I have the exact same fonts as the typical M$ user. Im typing this in Opera thats configured to use the TTF Helvetica font and it looks great.

Robot rolls up to an Intruder and shouts out "Halt! Who goes there!". Intruder gives it a nudge and replies "Seeya around" :)

Guys, HP-UX has supported ELF since 11.00. See here for more info.

I guess, while Unix is in the hands of a company line SCO, that finally Unix is dead. Sad..
The adult thing to do here is to do some serious (virtual if needed) handshaking and put this behind you guys.

It's not the net's fault. Blame (or shoot) the spammer's.

My wife goes out regularly for walks and I go with her in spirit :)
