DRM is coming.
Yes, we'll all start to whine and complain but there is no way to stop it.
Without DRM to whole business chain of the entertainment industry is fucked. So they'll enforce it.
With this background fact, you won't wonder that OGG was turned down. The encryption shemes will make sure that the song only play on certificated players. However a player which supports formats which can be used to illegal copies will never get such a certification.
So the manufacturers will avoid these formats at all cost.
When you watch this development the original movitivation of the OGG development team seems to very naive and economically clueless. While there might be some niche applications for OGG, it will be useless for the downtrodden masses. Basically the development of OGG has merely an academic value.
With more and more scientific advancements in ex-third world countries, I'm starting to wonder if this is the often predicted end of Western civilization.
The Western countries have lost their population advantage long ago - there are much more Chinese and Indians than Europeans and Americans.
The military advantage is already gone in thecase of e.g. France or UK or is already decreasing like e.g. US and Germany.
The industrial advantage is also gone: most industrial consumer products are not produced in Western countries these days leading to the huge trade deficit of the US.
What is remaining is the technological advantage.
However, India and China are catching up. The US has traditional 2 strategies to keep this advantage:
Sucking brillant minds out of 3rd world countries by getting them into the US via e.g. graduate schools.
Blocking advancement in 3rd world countries by covering every rubbish with patents.
However, both strategies are failing these days:
Foreign graduates from India and China are in fact returning to htheir home countries. By this they are exporting the US technology there and creating unbeatable (cost !) conpetitors to US businesses.
With reducing importance of the US in the world China and other countries are less and less willing to accept the US patent dictatorship - killing the exploiting by IP strategy of the US.
Bush tries to cover these facts by made up wars in the middle east. But the Iraq war wouldn't last forever and the US public will be forced to face their bleak future.
But I think that Apple computers are the world's greatest tech flop.
Why ?
Apple was in the mid-80ies the world monopolist in personal computers. But they managed to be crushed by a combination of small and not even innovative companies: Microsoft and Intel. And they nearly got killed in this process - only financial aid by MS (who need desperately a living competitor due to anti-trust trials) and a aggressive Steve Jobs saved them from oblivion.
The main reason for the near-death experience was a combination of high prices together with a lack of innovation. E.g. MacOS used still cooperative multitasking when even MS - not particulary our main innovator - had already ditched it.
And that's very sad because the foundation principles of Apple computers - easy to use and intuitive high quality computers - was in fact ahead of its time. But Apple managed to drag these principles down the chasm with them leading to the clumsy, security holes ridden software we see even in OSS these days.
Jobs tries to revert history right now putting Apple back to it's foundations. But he will fail. It's always impossible to get the wheel of time turning backwards and people who don't realize this usually get crushed below it. Just take a look at the history of communism.
The time to get IT into the high quality direction is over now. People are too much used to cheap resources, so they won't pay for quality any more. Take e.g. the fuss about the iPod batteries. Apple seems oddly out of place these days - like a living fossil from millenia ago. And all PR magic by Jobs won't change this.
Perhaps in the fullness of time people will get back to high quality IT, but I doubt that anyone living today will witness this.
The development team focused mainly on minor technical and legalistic issues like the naming of firebird, code clean up etc.
But they failed completely to incoperate the rising new mark-up technologies like XML-Signature or WebCGM.
If this development continues this year, Mozilla might lose it's technical lead to IE or Opera. And open source software might be again only the second winner.
Come on, magazines like Forbes are just low-level MBA entertainment.
Real buisness people don't read articles how this or that develops: they just getting their work done right first time.
No real entrepreneur cares about Forbes etc.
Personally, I think the direction of Mars exploration of ESA, NASA and JPL is totally fucked.
All the stuff is optimized for PR and not for scientific value.
Take e.g. the Mars Rovers. For the public these cute little robots look great and when they wheel around on Mars people think "Yeah, that's space exploration !". However from a scientific point these rovers are pretty useless. They have extremely limited range. So if you don't find anything on the landing site then it's very unlikely that you'll find something a few hundert meters away. The same goes for the ESA probe (if it ain't dead). The Euros realized that wheeling around on Mars is fucking stupid but they failed to realize that the same hold for scraping dirt and burning it. Face it - you cannot put a decent lab - even automated - on a small probe. A real robotic lab would HUGE.
But that's not the point. The point is that the 2 real scientific methods for Mars surface exploration are either getting a real lab there or getting a real drill (10 meters at least) there and returning the drill core to earth. And do you know what's the shame ? THIS STUFF COULD ALL BE DONE WITH MODERN TECH AND BUGET.
But these NASA and ESA wankers are just out there for cheap PR and job creation for their buddies instead of doing science.
From a mathematical point of view most surveys are fucked anyway. Biased data collection, misunderstood mathematical rules and "correction formulas" if the results don't seem to fit.
The problem is that many of the people in this business aren't mathematician and if they are then they are at best only second rates ones.
This poblem doesn't appear only in public survey - in fact most "statistics" in natural and political sciences are usually fucked. Most mathematicians don't care - we know that significance tests don't really give any viable results etc. So if people aren't interested in maths or aren't willing to invest time to understand it, then let them believe their rubbish.
Nevertheless all this whining about "skewed" surveys is meaningless, it's like complaing that the moon is made from bad tasting cheese.
We are not looking on Viking photos.
Most of the "Mars" photos we see is made up stuff: the resolution of the Viking probes cameras was too low to give good PR photos. NASA used first old style fakery, but it shifting to CG these days.
And before you start whining: it doesn't matter. Real Mars photos don't look interesting at all, it's basically just a endless, boring red desert. Even a waste dump looks better. So NASA isn't doing anything particular bad there. We must keep the public interest with cheap PR - unfortunately it's nearly impossible to get people interested in real scientific goals like acceleration free space travel and sub-Newtonian dynamics.
The mad cow disease is a 100 percent British invention.
And SARS was created by creative Chinese chicken traders.
Wankers like you claim that every invention comes from your country and you don't hestitate to spread lies and counterfaits.
Such fucking cultural imperialists like you are the reason why everyone hates Canada.

This is not always true.
E.g., the most influencial exporter of porn movies is...TATATATA...no, not France, but....FINLAND !
I found this most surprising, but they seem to have the most creative pron movie industry there.
I'm pretty confused that the timeline ignored all Perl-related advancements in the last year.
Has this something to do with the Perl license or are there other reasons ?
This is illegal according to the monopoly and shortage exploition act. Might also be private accumulation fraud but IANAL.
Get a chainsaw !

Contributing to this OSS project might be illegal for US citizens due to cryptography export laws.
