Star Trek: Voyager:
Unmemorable characters, superficial plots, enough gaps in the plot to make Spock have a stroke. The previously immortal and near unbeatable borg were made to look like a bunch of pussies in this. Time travel became more cliche than it previously was. It's crap, Jim.
That's not fair.
Nobody would forget the huge boobs of Seven of Nine.
Indeed Voyager set new levels of boobiness of Sci-Fi series.
If we get "Attack of the martian nude megaboob amazons from outer space" in some year then you'll all know whom to give thanks.
Star Trek: Enterprise was just a slight foretaste of the boobs to come.
Story aside, I don't see a problem with whoever registered "hotmale" which is a lot easier to confuse than MikeRoveSoft. To get MikeRoveSoft confused with Microsoft, the user would have to not only have serious issues spelling, but likely would have to have never seen the word in print. I can't beleive a user meeting those qualifications is going to be making any major software purchases soon...
However, as Dan Geer, former CTO of @Stake, notes, authentication can't possibly keep up with the number of people who need it and the number of transactions we try to control with it. Authentication doesn't scale.
But surveillance does. "The costs to observe are virtually zero, so it's not a question of will it exist, but what will we do with it?" Geer asks.
I sometimes wonder how clueless these "experts" can be. There seems to be no limit. The only logical consequence is that I, slashdot user Krapangor and well-known mensa member, declare myself to be the security overexpert of the world.
Your liberterian left wing propaganda suck giant donkey balls.
The Homeland sec dept. was created for well known reasons. Perhaps you do remember that crazy guy flied full loaded civillian planes into the twin towers in New York. Do you want this to happen again ?
And the dept. is no assorting of ultra jerks who put kids into prison who live in their parents basements. They go after real terrorists. They don't care about HOPE. These are professionals and not jerks. While some of these "h4x0rs" seems themselves as ENEMY NO. 1 they ain't.
The dept. goes after real criminals who try to kill and harm people. They don't mess with playing children. And they don't put a sticker "terrorist" on random people. They put people into jail if they have proof and are confident that they doing/did something criminal. And when they use the term cyber-terrorist they don't mean your HOPE attaing, website defacing kiddies.
The book relies to much on deprecated approaches for dynamic webpages: they heavily propagate Perl and PHP.
But decent professional development needs integration into n-tier business applications which must be done with
an object orientated programming language
supporting webservices or at least Corba and DCOM
with aviable RAD tools enabled for the Rational, Waterfall or Xtreme Programming development process.
This reduces the choice to Java, Ruby and.NET, but.NET drops dead due to Apache being un.net.
Honestly, I think that such books should burned in public to give other authors a decent warning.
They are the source to unprofessional web portals, downtimes and Javascript terror rubbish we see these days on the net. Either do it right or don't do it. Sometimes I think there should be regulations for web application development like we have these days for plane or rocket design.
Yes, that's hard but you must admit that I have a point.
If Linux get Desktop world domination then this raises the question which desktop will rule them all.
It's relatively unlikely that two desktops will be supported to the same extend by the OSS community.
So, what do you think KDE or Gnome ?
My bet goes on Gnome because it has better backing by Debian, Novell and Redhat.
Instead of dominating other distributions they should focus on something useful like dominating the desktop. And it would help if the Debian project drops their snotty attitude versus KDE.
Curvature and long term behavior of space time is not really known, thus you can't create such a map. Furthermore because Lorentzian curvature is not constant in time-like directions you would have to do a 4D and not 3D map aways. And you cannot really produce such a 4D map for it's still unknown e.g. if closed time-like geodesics (allowing time travel) exist. And their map would be fucked around black holes for obvious reasons.
PR science is ok, 'cos you need public funding and acceptance of science for laymans etc., but it's no excuse for stating wrong stuff, even if you want to make it understandable. There is no such thing as a good lie.
It's wrong to introduce young programmers to semi-professional hacking languages. Ok, PHP is not the worst, e.g. Perl or C are much more evil.
But the main problem is always the same: young people get their coding style fucked. And it's very hard to get rid of bad style.
Good code is not about obfuscation gibberish or hax0ring. It's about reusability, stability and portability.
When did buffer overflows and instable system surface ? At the beginning of the 90ies. And no Mr. Slashjerk 2000 Bill Gates is not to blame. People like Ritchie and Kernigan and Wall are to blame the introduction of gibberish programming languages. These fucked entire generations of programmer. Before C and Perl people had to learn Cobol, Lisp and Fortran and produced stable, working stuff. No Beagle 2 not calling back from Mars.
Natural chaotic systems can only decently predicted for a timespan of 9 days due to the limits imposed by the Heisenberg uncertainity principle.
Someone is whoring for funding and PR here.
If you reduce the water amount in saliva of the mongolian veld goat then you get stuff with nearly the same properties. The goats need this to be able to eat the cacti in the desert.
However this is known to some time now and nobody seems to care or even to use it.
People in the US always like it when they get the positive effects of globalization: cheaper products, good and cheap holiday locations and more revenue for US companies.
But when you get the "negative" side effects you always start to whine and scream around, e.g. when a German company buys a second rate car maker or some IT jobs are outsourced to India.
But, sorry, this is basically imperialistic egoism. People in other countries have - believe or not - the right to be happy and succesful, too. Especially if they are more competitive and innovative. You cannot always suck all reasources and revenues out of third world countries. Especially if these countries cease to be 3rd world countries and become first world countries.
It is indeed not required that Gunjaraa the Indian with eight kids and 2 wives has to be jobless and live in a slum just that you can afford you second hummer.
That's not fair.

Spot the beagle !
So, you won't buy any software ?

Where is the problem ?
Buying a second hummer is not a fundamental human right.

It mean that several friends of mine working for the FBI have to do extended service and our pub evening is chancelled again.

Note that this is European (in fact German) technology at work.
Logo
But you must admit that Schindler's List would be more interesting if it was 3D.
With 3D displays coming why should they produce 2D animation which doesn't use the full oppotunities of modern technology ?
the FBI.
No more filesharing for y0u !
the solar cells weight the same as batteries and their production uses up more energy than they provide in their entire lifetime.

I always thought that code based on GPLed code falls under the GPL anyway and must be published.

It would be outdated 3 months after it was published.
The only reason for buying is to get rid of the damned trees which lurk around everywhere.
