I've always been able to "coast" on my intelligence, I had a horrible GPA in high school, but I was able to go the collage I wanted (Iowa State) on the strength of my ACT scores. (bottom 10%, top 7% respectively).
Here, I was able to get through the system with a 2.0+ GPA, enough to graduate. I really wish I had considered a 3.0+ to be the 'minimum' because at this point I'd really like to go to grad school. Alas, I didn't.
That said, he might not have to end up doing something he doesn't want to do, as long as he's willing to work hard then he'll be able to accomplish something. You'll never get anywhere if you aren't willing to work hard. I mean, if you're smart you could (for example) do MIS programming and hate it (Worked for Iowa Student Loan part time as a coder while in school, and it sucked).
If you're willing to take the imitative and work your ass off (The kind of work that gets good grades in school) then you can be successful. Obviously it's possible, especially if you're intelligent.
But yeah, being smart won't get you shit on it's own.
Am I missing something, Why is an Evolutionary Anthropology center named after Max Plank? Did Plank do some anthropology on the side, or was someone just smoking some crack?
People never used to forget this, but now I see it all the time... People just assume that the background color on a web page will be white, and design with that in mind.
Well, I've got my browsers set to show gray backgrounds by default, JUST THE WAY GOD INTENDED! None of this white background heresy!
Btw, slashdot apperantly dosn't allow >body bgcolor="white"> as a subject, even thought they convert "<>" to "<>" automaticaly. Lame.
Just because something wasn't designed by apple doesn't make it ugly. I'd say that system is pretty average for what it is. Nothing brilliant, and way to detailed.
But honestly people, apple is hardly the god of design that some people seem to think. The old iMacs for example where pretty divisive on appearance. I also found the g5 towers pretty ugly myself. Bold, but ugly none the less.
What the author misses is that after you come back out of the uncanny valley, you'll get characters that really look human. That sort of thing should be possible soon.
As far as the animation goes, it just sounds like they didn't do a good job with synching up the lips, etc. Not that it's imposible, just that they failed.
Did the terms of the EV1 license change, or were there kickbacks, or what? The EV1 deal was made to seem like a huge deal, and people accused the CEO of giving them "millions" of dolars, which he didn't deny.

In mine, the js error only shows up as an icon in the system tray. I'll fix it through.
Actually, being able to render a scene in open GL and send it to a client over the web would be very useful, not for real time animation, but it could certainly be cool for doing custom 3d graphics for a website. Imagine something like a web based Myst rendered in real time on the server.
In this case, though, they are using PHP GTK for client side apps written in PHP.
I agree. Since I don't need to edit DNS records very often, it's not something I can do on Unix off the top of my head. Previously, I had to spend hours reading documentation before I could figure out how to do it. Setting up zones in 2k3 was extremely simple.
Yeah. I go insane when Windows starts freaking out after a month, and I think I need to do a re-install. It wouldn't bother me at all that Windows breaks so quickly if the place I work wasn't an ASP / VB shop. As it is, when Windows freaks, and I need to re-install, I have to install tons of apps. Work keeps me on Windows, and is a frequent reminder why I stay off Windows at home.
What are you doing to it, installing spyware? My main win2k install was actualy done in 2000. None of my other machines have ever been reinstalled, and they've been running fine.
2. No freakin' idea what all these services and things are doing
Actually, win3k server is really nice in that respect. It's basically XP with everything unnecessary stripped out and turned off. The services thing also has an explanation of every service.
Tasks that are trivial under Unix, have thus far eluded me. I still don't know how to set up DNS under Win2K.
Are you using Win2k server or desktop? The desktop version has a DNS server. In fact I'm not sure if even the 'normal' server version has a built in DNS server.
Setting up a DNS server in win2k3 enterprise server (which I got for free as a CS student, I'd never pay for a server OS) was very simple for me, much less of a pain then manually editing bind config files.
The only real difficulty is that most of the standard barer OSS servers need to be downloaded and installed separately, while they come preinstalled on Linux. It can be annoying to find, download, and install Apache, MySQL, Postfix, etc.
Honestly I find windows easier to administer, just because I'm more used to it. I prefer intuitive GUIs to text files for which you need to read gobs of documentation to figure out. The DNS server in windows is actually a good example of that. I was able to figure out how to configure everything I needed to do using just a few GUI screens. In contrast, I spent a few hours reading how to configure BIND when I used that.
Personally, if I was looking for a sys-admn I wouldn't hire someone who wasn't familiar with Windows and Linux, at least. But then again, I'm not.
In order for you to switch to something it has to be cool or compelling in some way. And for most individuals, I don't think windows is. Maybe a couple years ago it might have seemed "cool" to switch from old UNIX stuff to windows, but I don't think many people perceive it that way anymore. And for home users, windows is probably what they've always used.
And Mac users probably wont switch to windows because they hate it.
Heh. Actually this post is story is kind of funny, I mean. It's just a chance to bash the hell out of Microsoft without being off topic.
For the owner of those frequencies, it's a valuable asset. It'd be like owning property on Wall Street, and opening a peep show theater. I could make a whole lot more money selling the space as executive office space.
You might think so, but porn is very popular. A single strip club on wallstreat would be a cash cow, I'm sure.
But good luck buying one. City governments have a lot of control over what gets built. Just look at the porn shops in times square. They got shut down and replaced with Disney shit by Gulliani.
The FCC is like the city government of the airwaves.
That said, treating the airwaves like property is a bad idea. Why? Because it's a very limited resource. People like clear channel could buy up every radio frequency, and then turn them silent, to save money in a certain market. Or a radio business could fail and keep their frequency for years for the hell of it, or whatever.
Yeah, well. Without the FCC, there's nothing stopping me from buying a 80 megawatt radio and television transmitter, and broadcasting porn on every channel.
I mean, how are people going to choose what's 'decent' and what's not when anyone with a lot of electricity can broadcast anything on any channel whenever they feel like it? Most likely, they won't get anything at all.
Ah, so Apple didn't just make a huge contribution to OpenAL?
What diffrence does it make what happens to OpenAL when there's audiere?>
Anyway, Konquerer is GPL'd so it's not like apple really had a choice. It was either continue to be beholden to Microsoft and IE:mac, write their own web browser from scratch which would make no money, or pay for some improvements in a already existing browser which would make them no money.
Apple is adding this to OSS project that help them much more then they help the community. There's nothing wrong with that, it's fine. But it's not like their some "Champion" of OSS, like IBM with Eclipse or SUN with Open Office.
The OSX core that's OSS'd isn't really that important, or had that much of an impact on the OSS world as a whole. There are a few decent Kernels out there that people are free to use, and work fine. I mean we're not seeing RedHat/Darwin or anything like that yet.
When Apple Opens Aqua, or iTunes/iMove/etc. Then you might be able to claim they've embraced it. Until then, they're just using OSS as a tool, same as many other companies. Microsoft on the other hand is trying as hard as they can, and coming off rather insane (just listen to their GPL == teh eval rants).
----
Anyway, the premise of this story is rather laughable. What sane company would "innovate" their way out of the products that actually make them the most money. It would be suicidal, and the stockholders would kick your ass to the curb (or sue you if they couldn't). Also, those products allow Microsoft to peruse innovation in other areas, which they wouldn't be able to if they didn't have the cash.
But you will not be less agressive in general then you would be if you had not done those things. If you really want to lower your agression level, you could play a non violent game or do something to take your mind off your troubles.
Dear god man, what facist state do you live in!?

1. Bad that people steal code.
Right, because good people never get arrested.
3. A possible sign that Valve should hire more people so they can release it sooner.
It don't work that way, son.
