Effectively even if there is a 20% false positive rate, that means 80% of the time somebody not you trying to use your gun will fail. Better than the current 0% failure 100% sucess today. Bad guys would find the gun less interresting to steal, if they can't get their hand on the reprogramming tech or it is too expansive (and it would still be easier to steal a classical one not needing reprogramming).

In my home city they painted graffiti over, then tried some paint which was washable. To no avail and great cost.
Then they came to a very simple idea : ask a few artist and grafiti maker to make a painting , real art, with a subject.
