I was for moving the UN out of the US until i thought about this statement. The US would eventually view the UN as a forien threat and the whole thing would fall appart.

  4. this photo is depressing! on NASA BlueMarble: Next Generation · · Score: 1

I was about to say this:

The northern hemisphere is obviously deep in the winter as the snow line during summer is about 500-1000 miles more north of where it shows in this picture in North America anyway. It would be great if they could use another year to capture the whole thing in summer.

    When i realized this:

Such a thing is impossible! I'm sure the sad fact is that during summer North America is covered in a thick vale of pollution. Blue earth my ass.

  5. mysql is on its way out....? on MySQL 5.0 Candidate Released · · Score: 1

well, i think ultimately mysql is on its way out unless they do something with their restrictive license... Recently i've been likening it to evil. Because of the license our software department unceremoniously ordered a switch to PostgreSQL. We are told to even port existing applications where possible. I was a supporter for many years but recently my opinion of PostgreSQL has trumped mySQL. as a final nail in the coffin for mySQL in my mind is the fact its hypersensitive to corruption in cases of a power outage. I've restored backups of databases no less then 3 times this year because the system was abruptly reset... this is side by side of other postgreSQL installations that came out fine. so if you're considering MySQL, you better figure in a good UPS in your Total Cost of Ownership calculations.

  6. Re:MSN hates shopping on Digging Holes in Google · · Score: 1

Obviously you would come up with stuff about Apple Computer if you typed in "apple." The vast, vast majority of people with the query "apple" would be searching for Apple Computers as opposed to Granny Smiths. Again, if the search engine is used correctly, you can find relevant results just fine. Try "apple fruit -macintosh -mac"

More to the point, MSN's reasoning is flawed. When i want to buy a pair of shoes, i don't search for "shoe". Most of the results for shoe are are completely unrelated from "pairs of" shoes, probably because i didn't actually search for shoes.

Likewise, you don't say "i'm going to the store to buy some apple." The vast majority of people would assume you are buying a computer.

I dare you all to type "APPLES" in Google and see the interesting difference.

I should hope not! I could only imagine what would happen if a large empty cardboard box blew infront of you on the highway. You'd surely die when the grig following you barrles into you at 110km/h.

The warning system is a good idea however.

There is more evidence that he is only a var acting on behalf of microsoft by looking at his name in those emails signed "Saha Krsmanovic (ManPower)." ManPower is a Canadian federally subsided employment agency. They offer a job posting board and training seminars to those looking for employment. He is probably just acting as a Var for Microsoft, though he works at ManPower. I'd say the cost of this handout software was covered many times over because this program is probably somehow federally subsidized (Therefor i paid for, that CD is free on beahlf of my tax dollars?). It would also explain his cluelessness if he was a federal employee.
