If you had a weapon that could take out such ICBM's and Space faring missles, would you waist exposing its existance on a test? Some of the most effective rules of combat is to take them by supprise, and ALWAYS keep your arsenal a secret. Now im not confirming such a system exists, but ponder it for a second.
Getting everyone to perform this action would be the real feat. I keep in mind a few security risks when i associate my ip with a specific location, Even if it is a Zipcode only test which would be useless due to the lack of granularity. Zipcodes are too broad and may easily fall out of the range of a CO without notice therefore street addresses would have to be used and im not willing to give out my street address coupled with an IP.
As for getting broadband in rural or gap areas, there is are solutions for you, either satellite or another form of wireless communication. Though satellite is latent prone, it is still high speed. With the Invention of 3G for cellular (comming to a tower near you!), I forsee these ground based companies to loose money in the future anyway, I love the idea of being able to take my highspeed on the road. And I saw no mention of the Power line Internet project which will also assist in covering areas as well with existing lines.
I admit, Companies will withold this information from the public not for the sake of loosing business, because they already forsee that, but for the sake of taking the time to compile the data, gather the maps, will cost money, Money they are not willing to just hand over for no reason that doesnt benefit them.
Businesses are in the business of making money, not wasting it. I would have to agree with the business on this standpoint. BTW, i live in a rural area and the only HSI avail to me is Cellular.
If I am not mistaken, geographically 50 seconds ago The test will not be in exactly the same position due to earth rotation and change in orbit around the sun, Although miniscule are they compensating for this actual position change? Maybe they are succeeding yet only the broom closet or china knows?
hmmm
As a network security engineer of many years, i've learned to LEARN from each experience. If the corporate execs say to keep it under wraps, then you should probably do so, But doing quite a bit of forensic work to find out what was stolen whould be in your best interest. Even though it was windows 98 you should still look for some trail.
To prevent this in the future you can implement some inline monitoring systems like an IDS such as SNORT or on system third party firewalls such as Zone Alarm. Never put outdated Operating systems directly online, try to use an Authentication system for external browsing, most firewalls have this capablilty but are rarely used for load and complication purposes. Asking for someone to use a password when connecting to internet should not be viewed as an inconvience, but a security measure to possibly prevent partialy what you have experienced here.
If the data was worth any kind of money at all you should have no problem convincing your higher ups to invest into a company wide enterprise monitoring software. They can monitor spyware, viruses, network utilization, patches, and much more across multiple machines enabling you to react quicker. Also I am a big FIRM believer in the PANIC BUTTON when it comes to corporate security. You should be able to enter a command quickly to disable network access until a threat is contained, or you could simply pull a plug if your close enough;). These measures will save your network, a headache, lots of money and possibly your data at some point in time. But when someone complains that the internet is down and they cant work on their lovelife or get their email at work, you can smile and tell them your under attack so back off they usually go crying to the higher ups and ill bet you get their attention then!
However, if it makes you feel any better, I've found that less than 1% of the corporate entitys (that I have contracted or worked for) in the US actually use reliable monitoring capabilities. Mostly the Military have their act together when it comes to network security but at a price to convience to their employees (its well worth it). The rest just a simple firewall, router and basic patch management with little or no monitoring and are prone to attacks such as yours or even worse.
Good luck, Rember that you control the network, dont let it control you and welcome to the war that hardly no one talks about because they think it will go away with a new firewall....

You know, I really didnt know that Office 2007 was going to be released at all (this is how much i pay attention to updated microsoft products)
Wouldnt it be interesting to ponder if these delays are a FREE marketing ploy? Think about it, What better way than to tell the media that the largest Software company has delayed its latest greatest creation is to get it published into every newspaper, blog, and reach every single technical geek out there? Isn't it remotely possible that they arent even ready to release it and intentionally causing this disturbance for anticipation reasons?
The video game market has been doing this for quite sometime by postponing release dates be it either due to other popular titles of the same genre being released and they dont want to compete, or creating more hype of anticipation for the game, but there is a threashold as to how long you can wait before something comes out to replace or exceed the hype.
Think about the impact, traffic, free advertising that posting this to slashdot has already created, and its the perfect market for free advertising to geeks everywhere, its enough to make a company postpone their product releases on purpose, i know i would.
There is a thin line between "enormous effective mass advertising through delays" and "im sick of hearing about it, and when it does come out i want nothing to do with it" or how about the "I've already got something better, why would i need it?".
Bennie, Let me put my 2cents in by saying I have the exact same scenerio that you have, and how I accomplish this task. As for the decision on to use it, well, thats up to you.
I have a Treo 650 from Cingular that I just purchased about a month ago, for $250, now they go for $200. I also purchased the unlimited GPRS (140kps) internet option for an additional $40 bux which my company kindly picks up the tab for.
While on a trip to the western desert regions of Colorado, in the middle of the desert, my company had an emergency that required my immediate assistance with. I whipped out my treo and typed for about 2 hours to get the problem fixed. The keyboard was not great to type alot on but it got the job done.
I also keep tabs on my network performance using it. Its great.
btw, when i returned off vacation i bought a wireless foldable palm keyboard $70 which is also worth its money and helps with the typing cramp!
For a small company such as ours where we have just 1 techie on staff like ourselves, this will definately do the trick.

Hey, why not put all the wire to work for your heat disipation? It may actually decrease your cpu temp.
Why doesn't microsoft sue every homeowner or construction worker for that matter. For putting "Windows" on homes?
its a crazy world we live in.
Btw you can't sneeze without a license because I patented it. j/k
I know that most people arent going to admit this but if your family is poor you have a better chance of going to college. Being on welfare, (no matter your race), you get a nice break on scholarships through the U.S. government. If your family is say (well off) your screwed for this route.
Try your social services office. They will point you toward low income scholarships, even some banks can help you with this.
I wish i had gone to college while still living with my parents on welfare. I wouldn't be paying out the nose now, now that I'm on my own and making a sub medium wage. (btw, the military isnt a bad choice either)
I wonder, is microsoft using their autoupdate site to spike or sabotage their updates on old products to force the users to purchase newer upgrades?
I am an avid (and registered) user of windows 98 2nd ED for 2 of my machines. The others run BSD, RH Linux, and Solaris, it seems like the more i update from the original install the worse it operates, on both machines, new and old.
I figured it was my own machine until i reinstalled the entire os and performed an internet upgrade. Now the explorer locks up after upgrading a clean install but not before. The entire pc gets unstable after upgrading and I am concerned that they are sabotaging the upgrades to create instability to force me to buy their new XP. I WILL NOT BUY OR UPGRADE TO XP!
This is insane, I wouldn't run Windows at all if all the darn games that I play worked on other OS's.
Just my 2 cents.
Hey, and let me know if they are sabotaging their upgrades or its just me.

Now the only thing the enemy needs to be impervious is to wear suits that have quite a few mirrors on them to keep from getting killed. LOL
