I was able to rip it to iTunes on my iBook, no problems whatsoever. You are referring to the European version. Seems to be lots more copy protection going on over there first...

  2. Re:You mean iPhoto? on iPod 1.1 Updater Out · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's very possible that iPod's will have to use this software to work with 10.2. And Software Update can get the software out to more users than just an announcement.

For example, my Mom has a Powerbook 550. She *never* checks for updates on versiontracker, while I do it every day. However, she does have Software Update set to check automatically. So she would have missed the original announcement, but gotten the update from Software Update.

However, this should have been done with the software was released, not two months later.

No, the story was for the iPod software update. What the story left out was that the update is about two months old, but that Apple just put the update into "Software Update." I do not have an iPod (yet), but my iBook still wants me to install the update. Freaky...

  4. Re:but Apples ARE expensive! on Slashback: Rebuttal, Satellite, Patents · · Score: 1

Oh ok, so the low-end iBooks are slow with OS X? I assume you have one then? Because I do. I bought one last year when they first came out (A 500MHz DVD model). It is not slow at all in X. It actually runs it quite well.

The one thing I WILL say that Apple is overpriced in is RAM. NEVER buy RAM from Apple. It is always cheaper to buy from Crucial or the like. But this is the same as EVERY computer manufacturer. How much does Dell charge for RAM?

One problem when people compare prices is that they compare an Apple to a machine they build. They aren't even close to being the same. A good comparison would be against someone like Dell, because both companies warranty what they sell. If one of your Athlon XP2000's breaks down, who do you call?

  5. Solutions... on AOL vs. Trillian · · Score: 1

First of all, I think Trillian looks like crap. The app may be useful, but it is damned ugly. Anyway, back to the topic...

Ok, I think AOL is right in what they are doing. It is their network, their protocol, and they don't have to let anyone use it if they don't want to.

However, I think the reason all these apps are out is because AOL's program doesn't provide what people want. If AOL would listen to people and provide updates other than "send IM greetings" maybe people wouldn't be flocking over to other programs.

I think this is an even bigger issue on a Mac. In OS X, the AIM client sucks. It's bloated and slow. It just recently got features added such as file transfer and IM images, but they aren't always stable. Because of this, I use Adium, which is smaller and much faster. I'm also able to keep everything in a single window, which eliminates screen clutter from all the open IM windows (to see what I'm talking about, go here).

Also, Adium's service has never been cut off by AOL. I think this is because they use TOC. If AOL can't shut off clients using TOC, why not move Trillian over to that protocol. I know that a lot of the extra features will disappear, but at least you'll be able to talk to your AIM friends.

Well in the Mac world you can find software everywhere that takes advantage of dual processors. If you're running OS X, EVERY program does. Even Photoshop (of course, only if you're running the beta). :o)

First, Apple has had top of the line graphics before. If you remember, they were the first to ship GeForce 3's (in the PowerMac models). So what if it was only a few days, they still had 'em first. :o)

And you can go to the Apple store right now and pick up one of these snazzy machines with a GeForce4 inside. I suggest you go check it out.

I don't think any of your analagies have been valid so far. 8-tracks and Beta tapes were both replaced by newer hardware. However, I will (or at least should) be able to load the newest version of Winblows on my computer. My hardware will not change at all, however it might render the playing of these so called CD's impossible.

It would be like updating the firmware on your VCR (if there is such a thing) and having it render all older VHS tapes unplayable.

You're smoking crack. :) The best FF ever was 6, 7 was just mediocre. I'm almost done with 10 now, and it is great. Much better than 8 and 9. The only console rpg that I've enjoyed since FF3 has been Skies of Arcadia. :)

Umm...no. XoloX was a gnutella client, NOT a fast track client. The reason it still works is because it didn't have to login to a central server to work, it just checked to see if there were updated versions available. Team XoloX were able to make the program shut down through this check. Therefore, if you keep your client from reaching the site, it doesn't check and it lets you access the gnutella network freely. In fact, it's still my favorite file sharing app.

Ok, I work at Best Buy, and I can tell you that the person you talked to was full of shit. We are NEVER told when a shipment of ANYTHING is coming in. In fact, there's no real way of knowing what is on a truck until it has arrived. Only then do we know what we have gotten in. And since the Gamecubes are more than likely coming directly from Nintendo instead of from one of the warehouses, there's no way of us to check whether or not we'll be getting any in.

She probably told you that just to have a little fun. Best Buy employee's like to make up stories for customers.

The only problem with this argument is that no matter how many XBox's MS sells, it will NEVER make any money unless it sells games. If everyone had an xbox just to use it as an X11 server, MS would have to leave the console business. MS's problem isn't selling the consoles; they need the games. The console that has the best games will win this "war." The consoles don't sell the games, the games sell the consoles. How many people bought PS2 because of GT3? Or bought it because MGS2 was coming out for it? How many excellent games does the xbox have for it right now? I know it's just the launch titles...but MS has a lot of catching up to do.
