Does every wrong need to be met with another wrong?
Or can we draw a line, and say "enough - time to fix the problems and reclaim the American Dream for our children and ourselves"?
I love how people keep saying that we all deserve this "American Dream" like there is some rule saying that everyone is entitled or going to have it. Has anyone seen the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness".
Christopher Gardner: It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?
There is nothing guaranteed in this country. But you are given a chance to try and achieve it. It will not be handed to you on a silver platter and you are not entitled to other peoples money, you need to get off your fat ass and earn it for yourself.
If he approached them in a friendly manner, instead of lawyering up like some suggest, and pointed out that they no longer use this software and that it might be good publicity for them to release it as OS they would probably would say yes.
are you asking people from Slashdot. Why don't you approach your company and ask them what they think? I have a friend that did just that with a app he developed, the company let him take it Open Source. If they own what you create then you need to make sure that they are going to release it.
at my current company for this reason. I work for a p0rn company and they have a policy against using the internet for non-work related stuff. I got a warning for reading cnn.com.
sure there is. if you're abusing the network at school they have every right to terminate your access. read your school's policy. I've got some friends that are the sr network admins for large university's around me and they've cut people off all the time. Like I said, school provided internet is a privledge not a right. It's just like your drivers license, you can lose it any time.
Their problem is they are spoiled brats who believe that they deserve everything for free. The school is not obligated to provide them anything except an education, room and board. The internet access they provide is a privledge, which can be taken away if people abuse the privledge. Read your college or university's AUP.
Also, wait till they get in the real world where their employment will be terminated for abusing the "free" internet at work. I've personally seen people terminated on the spot and escorted out of the building by security for abusing the internet at work.
should be lucky they get internet access in their rooms. When I went to college, which wasn't that long ago, we had to go to the library or settle for dialup in our rooms
growing up, getting a job, buying your own place. Then if you've done everything right you can buy whatever service you want because you have the job to pay for it.
You're right, it's a lot of peoples problem. But this problem affects a lot of Americans. So I do take offense to anyone outside the US taking jobs away from Americans. And my feelings are not just for the IT industry, it's all industries. And you're right corporate America and politicians are to partially to blame, the other part of the blame falls on all the Americans that let this crap happen by doing nothing. Instead they would prefer to shop at Walmart and save 5 cents. They would prefer jobs outsourced so they can save a little on their cars, or just buy foreign cars. This stupid problem has been going on for a long time, and nobody seems to care that there will come a time when there won't be any jobs. All because people didn't care or the only thing they cared about was saving a couple pennies. So of course I'm pissed and I do take it personally when some indian takes "my" job.
I bet that his company is also doing work for American companies. And if not his company there are lots of other indian companies that are, so why help them out when they are stealing our jobs. Sorry, but he gets no love from me. He wants us to help him, his company, his country, yet they take our jobs. Maybe he should be outsourcing to us to solve his problems.
you've come to the Slashdot community which is mostly Americans to ask us to help you out. Someone who is taking our jobs away from us. I don't think so.
with what you said was "since they offered the best speed for the price". If saving money is more important that your internet connection, then stop complaining because you were too cheap to get a reliable service.
If your company relies on the internet then cough up the dough and get a reliable connection. If you can't afford to be offline, then spend the money on hardware/software/service providers that will provide redundancy. Otherwise, stop complaining.
See, that's the problem. People think they can do things good enough, then it becomes something they rely on, and guarunteed cheap products like Access will break. Then they're screwed. Access is NOT a tool that should be used, except for mockup databases.
Level Headed,

than Novell should have the right to revoke SCO's licenses, then start taking revenue and assets of SCO.
Correction, it's 3/10ths of a second. If you tried to buy a domain 30 seconds after it was deleted you'd be too late.
what anyone else would do, and post the name of the company on Slashdot.
should have at least a couple of the O'Reilly Perl books.

they're not random. They are specifically targeted at people who meet certain criteria. They just tell you it's random so you don't think about it.
