  1. Re:$22/month for dialup!!?? on Earthlink Sponsors Cheap Linux PCs · · Score: 2, Insightful
The deal part about this is that you're paying $200 over the course of a year, with no financing or interest charges.

So you pay $70 for the desktop (plus shipping) and $21 per month for the dial-up service.

I can imagine a lot of people wanting a cheap server or another pc in the home hopping on this, even if they already have broadband.

Hell, if I needed another machine, I'd do it in a heatbeat. And I'd never log into the Earthlink account, and would cancel after a year.

Try Sigalert.com. I had an account with them about 18 months ago when it was a free service, and now there's a nominal fee... $2.95 per month.

When you create your account, you can configure your route on the freeways, and the times in which you travel. Sigalert will send an email to you during your specified travel times advising you of hazards along your route. They also claim to be WAP friendly so you can check with a wireless device (not having a WAP-enabled phone, I can't verify). I don't pay for the service, but I check their free real-time maps before leaving for my commute to work or to home.

Last I checked, there was only a 3 hour difference between San Diego and NY.

Right now, you're stuck with the local service area.

I know it's offtopic, but it would be nice for this to eventually evolve into something like VOIP. I have Vonage, which allows me to take my number with me wherever I go. If I move to another state, I keep the same number. For $5 per month (each), I can get a local number as an alias to my main line. So my family can continue to call me and not pay for LD charges (they make a local call) and I still get a local number in the new city/state.

Hell, I can even carry the bridge (and a phone) with me and plug it in anywhere I can find a network drop/hotspot--plug in and make/receive phone calls. (I did this on a recent business trip, where I was lucky enough to get high-speed access in room. I plugged in the phone bridge and a cheap phone I brought with me, and was able to make calls without having to pay for roaming on my cellphone, or pay the charges to use the hotel phone.)

I found this site about a year ago, and actually called them for their prices. Think of this in the range of "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" -- the Echo, the low-end model, started off at $1500, and ran as high as $3500 for the Aura. Damn good looking workstations, though

I run an 802.11b network at the house so that my roommate, myself, and any hardware equipped guests can share the 'net. Of course, I don't tell AT&T this because I don't want them scrutinizing my account, looking for reasons to drop me for EULA violations. But what I find interesting is that AT&T has partnered with Linksys and is pimping the wired and wireless products on their home networking page. While this is not in direct violation of the EULA, which does allow for a home network to be created, it only allows for a network that is accessed the the account holder, and residents of the immediate household (family, roommates, that Guy on the Couch). I just hope that AT&T realizes that Wi-Fi radiates, and that the range will surpass the walls of most of the houses that it is installed in.

Just wait until 802.11g is commercially available. It will be backward compatible with a and b, and will provide the throughput and distance of a, with a cost more akin to b.

Plus you have the benefit of building a credit history as your corporation, thus negating any bad personal credit history. Great for former dot-comers who have credit problems after the high-paying job dries up.
