I think it really depends on the individual.. I have seen students (mostly women hah) that are super organized using a simple planner and pencil, and others using a pda etc.
Myself, half scribled notes on pieces of paper and a wifi laptop do the job...
I think your missing the point. I think what he is asking is does banner advertisment work? Could he maybe pay for the bandwidth that he is giving out for free?
Doubt it! Not using conventional banner ads. But maybe if you got the local businesses in on it, hit them up to have their name shown to the users of the network, that might bring in a little income.
bets are also on for how long before that same person sues the makers for not including a warning label stating
"device may cause wearer not to hear oncoming train while walking on tracks"
and win..

With this kind of coverage we can scan networks from the comforts of our own homes.. :)

With just a little fine tuning.. the words "Honey, are you listening to me?" take on a whole new meaning..
I'm using charter too, still on @home however. They plan on switching us to pipeline at the end of this month (yeagads thats mear days)
So far it has been nice to have @home becuase their network is so owned right now you can get away with anything..
But its useful to have a few screens transparent and on top while I read email! No excuse not to keep an eye on stats now.. doh
