Yeah, but the cool part of momNpop ISP's is that if they have a news server, you can do all the 'interesting' stuff like create, move, remove groups. It'll take a day for the net.gods to notice.
On usenet, there's too many propigation problems anyways. Many of us miss posts done by ISP's within 10-15 class A netblocks. Multiple pulls on multiple servers can help, but there's always that fighting to find the new news server.
I used to pull from alt.control and alt.test and pull news server that looked like a FQDN and then ping tested them. Then it tried to connect and do a test. I then used them as my 'private news server'. Still, you wanna be careful doing this... cause the net.gods live in control groups. Piss them off, and you already have UDP.
BTW, what's with all these slashdot server errors?????
---You can tolerate using mplayer for dvds? A brave man you are. And tolerant.
I just created a stupid 'lil app for common switches for mplayer. Makes running a movie (on amy medium) simple for me.
---And what were you referring to about an american dvd? The coming one (that'll be released N months from now)?
NO. I already have a rip of the CB: movie.
I was reffering to slight points that 'just dont add up' in the american DVD episodes if you dont watch the movie. If you watch the episodes (in american voices), all seems normal. Watch them in japanese/eng subtitle, and there's "holes" (for lack of a better name).
Lets take what's on Trolltech's site now.... ___________________
IBM Pervasive Chooses Trolltech's Qt/Embedded and Qtopia for its New Embedded Linux Reference Platform
IBM's Pervasive Computing Group is using Trolltech software technology for IBM's recently announced embedded Linux reference platform. "IBM's choice of the embedded Linux/Qtopia platform is a milestone for us and for embedded Linux," says Haavard Nord, Trolltech's CEO. "It sends a powerful message to the market: This platform is so good that IBM, a Fortune 50 IT powerhouse, has made it a part of its mobile computing strategy." Look out, world ___________________
What I dont understand is how Canopy group can allow conflicts of interest like this. You have SCO suing for "Unix Ownership". I'm assuming 1 gigabuck is a sizable business decision, in that you'd ask permission of your 'owners'.
Yet QT is stuck on the other end, and dealing with IBM. I dont much in terms of economics, but wouldnt this be a major Conflict of Interest on part of Canopy Group? In other words, something IBM could have this suit just dismissed (is it under summary judgement?).
YOu dont seem to get it. After doing the interpeter stuff for Apple, Microsoft created an 8086 Unix clone called Xenix. They decided to split IP into 2 seperate companies. Xenix mangaers went to create Santa Cruz Operations (SCO). SCO WAS a part of MS, and for a while, they owned 11% of the company. They might even now..
Sorry.. Alang and slang is mplayer dvd audio and subtitling commandline options. I was doing commandline options to mencoder and comments/commandline crossed;-)
Alang = Audio Language. Audio to Japanese Slang = Subtitle language. Subtitling to English
I got a fansubbed version of it on a CD Xvid compressed fullscreen. I'll say this.... If it comes out in theaters here, I'm watching it, and I'll buy the DVD.
In terms of quality, the animation is beautiful. The storyline, I believe, is the movie between EP 24 and 25 of the Cowboy Bebop series. This explains some weird 'sayings' in the alang=ja,slang=en of the American dvd.
Too Too true. If anything, I carry around with me a Linuxcare bootable business card for computer fixing and (cough) other things;-) Usually I'll do a Debian install of stable 3.0r1 and then decide to 'move on up' to testing if it's a desktop machine.
If I was running a Linux desktop lab, I'd use debian and netboot the whole thing and DD a ftpmount'ed image across the hard drive (Assuming the hardware is standardized. All the packages and cd's would be local. And if I had all that archive, I'd also open it to local traffic to school downloads (by dual-homing of course).
I totally agree with you that downloading 2 gigs per month every month of ISO's is bonkers. But you shouldnt have insulted "Deity Michael". He's a bonehead with infinte mod points. Still, anybody on my friends list is given +6 and anybody who's given FofF is +3. I still see the people who matter, no matter how deep in the karma ground they are. (wink)
---Sometimes I turn the images back on for slashdot.org. But there's never any actual information there, so I turn them back off.
That's what I've determined. I prefer to read slashdot in "advant/LYNX" style where everythiong is just plain text (with exception of ads and friendship meter). I'm also passively ignoring images due to disabling the showing them.
If I'm porn/schematics/image surfing, images go on with filters. If not, Poof! they're not displayed.
If you look at kuro5hin's model, they use text messgaes. They also allow you to post stuff in the "ad space posting". Very cool. You even end up with word-to-word advertising (Which CmdrTaco, you should already know that's the best advertising bar none...).
I can tell you, I'd abaondon my account by putting my login/passwd on a high ranking post I make if you disable the use of "plain text site". Altavista did that for a while and I just didnt use them. I ended up using Dogshit for full metasearching until Google came around. I heard of Google from my friends/usenet community.
I smoked it but didnt inhale. No shit, I use debian.
---what orfice are you pulling that crap out of?
The same one as you do..
---YUO=TROLL, you cocksucking fag!!1!
You know, that really was a pathetic troll. If anything, you want to choose a "real name" and pisspeople off by being on the 'other' side of a heavily contraversial issue. Like all those VI vs Emacs bitchNmoans, you loudly scream PICO or nano and devoutly yell that that rock for these reasons..bla bla reason bla bla..
The idea is to insult everybody while sounding intelligent.
Take a look here for one of my better trolls or here for claiming my own post under guise of Anony-coward. I took about 1/3 of all the posts in that WHOLE article in my thread.
Now that's a troll. Not this puny crapette of one. If you'd like to learn, I'll help ya dumbass.
---An excellent idea. While we're at it make the violations under the GPL so that the violations will quickly spread around the world.
That actually was my (unstated) idea. There's a minefield of patents in video/audio. Let's start squashing them by making simple tools that do what they need to do. For example, like XINE. Why in the hell do that need the DVD CSS algorythims quite hard to install, exept under some systems. All you need to do in Windows to play a DVD is to install the disc that came with your DVD drive (you usually get players with them). Works out-of-box. The XINE group's a bunch of pussies.
Better yet, if you have the bandwidth, make a Debian/Redhat archive that has RPM's/ DEB's of all major packages that have been neutered by the maintainers. Then add all the "good" packages in.
---That would play hell with any attempts to squash the violators. I agree, the USPTO is doing nothing about its responsibility to make sure that patents (of whatever type) are non-intuitive, etc. Seems like all they're interested in collecting the fees for the filings.
According to the statements made by other slashdotters, the patent officals are paid by the patent. True or not, I dont know or care. I dont support very corrupt bodies of anyhing. The UPSTO falls under that category.
Still, it seems that other slashdotters dont understand if I "hate" software patents. Silly, that they see "hate all patents".
Well, when you want a system to run exactly the way you want it, Debian's not the answer. Slack is. You set it up with minimalist stuff, set up the server(s) and log out. Log in ONLY for bug patches.
It'll run for months on end, or until you need to upgrade it. Really, it's best for 1 solid server. Web, mail, SMB, NFS. you name it, but I'd have each box with its own server (unless you're really cutting corners).
Yep, that about says it all. Still, I'm wanting to put together a Knoppix-like distro but focused on media. Have all the fun tools/players in it, along with a XINE DVD plugin, MPlayer, and OGLE.
Yeah, but the cool part of momNpop ISP's is that if they have a news server, you can do all the 'interesting' stuff like create, move, remove groups. It'll take a day for the net.gods to notice.
How about an E-mail Death Penalty for Bigpond?
Amen to that!

Bringing pitchforks and torches and burn/stab the idiots out of ICANN HQ and take over the servers??? Or how about the Fiber-seeking-backhoe?
Cool. I got FP. Now I'm l33t as every anony-coward. Read it and weep, kidz.
