>Clearly there is no such thing as limitless bandwidth; Shannon's theory tells us there is maximum amount of information that can be transmitted over any one channel, and simple physics tells us that there are a limited number of channels, no matter how you slice it.
Explain to us then why physics limits channels? As to what I casually see, AM radio takes about 10 KHz to broadcast. I have a fairly sensitive receiver that can tune on the KHz individually.
What if the transmitters/receivers had only 2.5 KHz of buffer zone between channels. Then, couldnt we pack 2 times as much channels?
I think what this "nut job" is saying it's a problem with equipment not being sensitive enough. Increase the sensitivity, increase the virtual bandwidth.
>Yes, one can imagine a different technology such as directional antennae or spead-spectrum, but how much more complex do your receivers have to be?
I've seen 1950's radios that still work yet today. Tell me, oh great Ph.D'ed one, why a $1.00 upgrade on componentry wont give more bandwidth...
>On could also say that A knife could be built that can cut a loaf of bread into infinite pieces, if we could design it to cut sub-elementary particles.
You dont know the difference between large finite and infinite. That statement really shows it. The number of grains of sand that would fit in the known universe is still large finite.

---Government is the disease. Competitive capitalism is the cure.
I'm a libertarian/conservative mix and I dont see what the big deal for working for the government is. No matter how reasonably small they get, they'll need computers. And they'll need people knoledgable enough to use/fix/network them.
IT will always be in demand. Spouting crap like this is just dumb.
If anything, you oughtta be saying to make a federal flat tax, and in effect, dissolve the IRS. Yes it would kill tons of jobs of tax prep, but it would make understanding how the taxing system works. You would know X percent would be going to federal. Hopefully, if the federal govt. takes this up, the states would too. And for you trolls out there, I'm not against taxes, but am for fair rules and payment on taxes.
>First, the whole "my religion doesn't allow me to look at porn" argument is just nuts. If you truly believe this, you won't need your big brother (or whomever) to watch you.

She wouldnt understand it.

I got suckered by the same thing. I grabbed the newest kernel from kernel.org. Turns out ol' linus packaged it with his own configs. He turned off Virtual terminal.
Just go back and turn (in char devices) on Virtual Terminal , and support for it. If text editing's your thing, the Anonymous Coward to this post is right.
And whuile we're on it, how "stable" is/dev fs? I've been using it for a while, and it's quite nice with auto-creation/destruction of/dev/ nodes. Is there a plan to integrate this permanently to the kernel (and drop the old/dev crap)?
---Linux developers really need to stabalize driver interfaces. I should be able to go to kernel.org and download the latest kernel *binary*, then install a binary driver from the CD-ROM that came from my NVIDIA card.
Module Versioning Support (added in 2.5.63) provides a basic way to determine what kernel its for and try to interface with it. It's cool that they're listening. Hell, even Win9x drivers wont work on Win2k. This might even loead to having 2.4 modules on 2.6/3.0.
---USB and Firewire buses should be exposed by kernel as network interfaces, accessible to user programs through socket API. In this way, USB drivers will be both easier to write/debug AND will not contribute to Oops. For the ultimate of cool, Wine should support Windows USB drivers (my Virtual PC does!) and I should be able to just install Palm and Zaurus desktops and use them rather trying to feed ttyUSBNN to kpilot.
First, its a basic bus, and they have it use SCSI as a transfer.. I'd rather have it dump in scsi and be done with it.
---Having a stable system that doesn't have to be rebooted to Windows to use some unsupported USB device is far more important than raw performance. I wish any system's developers - Linux, *BSD, Darwin, BeOS, etc - would concentrate on this goal before going back to play with cool toys.
Basic Unix Tenant: Next ****'s hardware will be faster. Aim for portability and stability.
Yeah, I do. Try looking through some of the software patents. There's a software design patent just recently filed by Apple (why, doesnt copyright already have precidence?), or how about "An innovative way to sell stuff over the internet".
We're ending up with patents on software utilities that normally exist. Companies/people are just applying normal principles to the internet and then slapping a patent on them.
And dont get me wrong. Many of the hardware patents are quite neat and damn near most of them deserve to stay in there. There's a few suckers like "innovative way to swing on swingset", but those are disregarded by judges who can see past that crap.
