For the moment, my situation and time for tinkering is very very limited. I found myself in the situation that the Atom 330 was the only computer I had that worked. (I borrowed out all my other machines to friends in need - yeah, I'm crazy like that) On top of that my wife's been in the hospital for the last 2 month, which greatly reduces my computing-tinkering-time.

Long story short: No, I didn't try Debian Lenny on it yet and won't for the moment.

The replacement dumpster diven Athlon XP 2600+ does the job. However, I am severely disappointed in the Atom. Unless that board is defective, I can't see how it could be hardware related. (And then, how do you prove that the board is defective, if it runs... just hellishly slow?)

Lest you still wet behind the ears 20-somethings have forgotten that today's Netbook is just as powerful as a several year old desktop (or laptop!)

I'm 33 and I've been into computers since my early teenage years. I actually own an Atom 330 desktop and the thing is sluggish as hell. For web browsing. Yes, typing in a facebook status is letter-by-letter-appearing-on-screen. Forget Flash Based Games alltogether. The thing replaced a 6 year old P-IV 2.6GHz with Hyperthreading. I'm sorry, but Atom CPU's are in not even in the same league as six year old desktops.

Performance, I think, would be on par with a P-III 800MHz. I happen to have had a P-III 800MHz desktop back in the day (now it's my parents server, running OpenBSD). If I recall correctly that machine was bought in 2001. We're talking 8 year old desktop by now.

I wonder if it's the operating system (I used Ubuntu 8.04). Up until January 2007, I used a P-III 600MHz with 512Meg RAM laptop running Windows XP and that wonderfully responsive. Alas, I have no spare WinXP license for the Atom 330. Yes, I could go the "Arrrr" route, but I've outgrown that by now.

That's not going to change the overall sluggishness of the operating system on the Atom. I will give it a try, but for now the Atom 330 is retired in favour of an old Athlon XP 2600+ with 1GB RAM and WinXP Home (Sticker on the case, FTW!)

Netbooks are stepping up in performance, as this four-threaded model [reghardware.co.uk] shows, and will soon be able to do many more things.

Ehm, I think you are grossly overestimating the Atom 330 with an ION chipset. Oh, don't worry... So did I, I saw that it was 64-bit, dual-core + hyperthreaded and the chipset is capable of doing high definition.

Well, I have one. Not the netbook form, but as desktop. It was originally meant as a toy for me, but my wifes desktop died (caps blown) and I decided to replace her P-IV 2.6GHz with Hyperthreading with my shiny new toy.

To make a long story short: even for casual surfing the Atom 330 couldn't handle. Typing on facebook is pretty much a wait-for-the-next-letter scenario. Don't get me started on using Adobe Flash games: utterly impossible.

Sure, this might be due to the fact that I used Ubuntu 8.04 on it and had to install the proprietary NVidia drivers manually. Would Windows XP fare better? No idea, I have no spare license.

Also, a thing that was highly annoying, but may be due to the chipset. I bought 4Gig RAM for that board and I can only use 3.3Gig. About 256Meg (I think) are used for the framebuffer. So where is that 0.5Gig? Well apparently that ION chipset has the old limitation of days yonder and doesn't do memory remapping. So even with a 64-bit OS, your max is 3.5Gig - framebuffer. Very disappointing.

No, I don't work for them. Getting an original Asus power supply: next to impossible. eBay seemed to be all croocks, as they wanted to trade outside eBay.

When I started the upgrade, it dawned to me that I should have uninstalled those and then do the upgrade, but it was too late. After the upgrade: flickering, etc... I simply booted in recovery mode, started a shell, reinstalled the NVidia binary drivers manually rebooted and everything was fixed.

Now granted, I would rather use the Ubuntu provided binary drivers, but if they don't work I just do it the above way. I still think this problem is caused by the fact that I already did install the drivers manually and Ubuntu upgrade was confused. For kicks, I should just reinstall 9.10 from scratch to see what happens.
