Funny, my 30-day old MacBook Pro included official Apple instructions for upgrading both the memory and the hard drive.
I think the difference though is that where Apple often makes choices (like no upgradable phone memory) they provide built-in capacities that satisfy the average consumer. Sony's choices, like memory stick, don't tend to satisfy the average consumer (any more).

Exactly. Anti-competitive behavior would be Apple telling App submitters that in order to be approved you must agree not to write apps for other mobile platforms.
While it's true that open class USPSA (IPSC) shooters use "space" guns there are plenty of very good USPSA shooters who shoot something that closely resembles stock guns (production, revolver). Jerry, for instance, shoots double action revolver. As just an average USPSA shooter I can draw and hit six separate steel targets, one shot each, in under 4 seconds. Equipment helps, but the top USPSA shooters have more going for them than just equipment.
The research is interesting, but if I had to draw against the guys I regularly shoot with I would not want to be the second guy clearing leather (well kydex actually).
Well Apple does influence the the sell price, but through a technique known as Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) - which is legal, as opposed to price-fixing, which is not legal.
While you could use Macs to gauge when a new technology has "made it", Apple actually inflates the price of the hardware they sell and has a history of price-fixing.
So you're saying Apple conspired with itself to not undercut itself on price?
Given that I posted at almost the same time as the post right before this and before most of the others I fail to see how this is redundant, except maybe to a chronologically challenged moderator.
Quality control / reliability is the issue. How they handle it is at best damage control. The most they can hope for is people thinking "They really screwed the pooch there, but at least they agreed to adopt the puppies." As for stepping up with the warranty did they really step up or is this a preemptive step to avoid a large (and expensive) class action lawsuit.
It would appear from the size of this charge to earnings ($1billion+) that the XBox reliability is considerably worse than average. Microsoft even called it "an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles," marketing-speak for "Houston, we have a problem."
Couldn't be more wrong - the Zune is all about DRM. Microsoft wants to be the DRM vendor of choice (think lock-in), if DRM ceases to be important Microsoft has little reason to stay in the MP3 market.

Apple's gross margin is 41%, the average for their industry segment is 37.9% - nothing very startling (or monopolistic) there at all. http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/invsub/results/compare.asp?Page=ProfitMargins&symbol=AAPL

It seems possible that shrinking immigration quotas are has affected America's tax and knowledge base.
Looks like the base of workers knowledgeable in English was one of the first to go.

I don't hear any complaints about what they are hiding, and I also don't see any slashdot articles on it.
Perhaps if the the national archives story was somehow related to technology, let's say...oh...it involved email, you would see it here on Slashdot.

Remember, nobody was going to spend $300 on an MP3 player named the iPod...
Well, with "No wireless" and "Less space than a nomad" why would they?
Bah, call me when you have it working in production animals...
There are lots of places that will do the conversion for you.
I believe the US Government wants us to refer to it as dunking instead of waterboarding now.
Probably would help to create a better shameless plug if you proofread the login page before you invited the world...
So, by that reasoning, shouldn't slashdot users approach an unknown circuit palm first?
eight is something the desktop market does not need
So is he the only person on the planet who has not tried the Vista beta?
I don't believe that is even remotely true, or wise for that matter.
It's not obvious why this is a choice at all.
So they can verify that there are drivers available for your hardware choices.
Perhaps you mean obolus?
Hacking into peoples' computers and using them to send spam, that is computer fraud.
More like computer trespass actually
This article seems to indicate that my comment above really may have been a lot more "Insightful" than "Offtopic."
Offtopic? I could see Funny, or Overrated, or maybe even Insightful (what MS mobile appliance couldn't use a bigger battery), but Offtopic? Sheesh!
