  1. Sucky company with a good product on ReplayTV Price Drop Bait-and-Switch · · Score: 1
After getting to play with a Tivo for a week I decided I was in the market for one and was waiting for an after Christmas sale to pick one up. I had vaguely heard of Replay TV but knew it was like a Tivo. So, when I happen to come across a Replay unit for only $150 and all the signs and stickers said that it came with service I decided to buy one.

I took it home and set it up right away and I like it much better than the Tivo. It has a lot of extra features that would cost more in a Tivo like built in ethernet and sharing among units ($99 fee on a Tivo). After playing with it for about an hour, I liked it so much I went back and bought another one to give as a present.

So now I hear that my unit which has been working fine will continue to work but the one that has been sitting under the tree will not unless I fork over some more money. Sure they can give a refund but it still makes me look bad that my gift needs to be returned.

I'm going to sit on it until the last day to do returns because Replay still has time to do the right thing.

I do like my Replay but I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth over this.

  4. How to return TurboTax on TurboTax Activation Fiasco · · Score: 1
I took a look on the Intuit web and found this link on how to return TurboTax within the 60 day limit.

    Returns & Guarantees

Intuit offers a 60-day money back guarantee, with the exception of QuickBooks Point of Sale. This product offers a 30-day money back guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with your Intuit products, please return them for a full refund (excludes shipping and handling.) To return your product, simply fill out the back of the invoice with information about the return including name, address, phone number, reason for returning and (if an exchange) your desired replacement product. Then send the product to:

    Intuit, Inc.
    Attention: Returns Department
    6060 Nancy Ridge Drive
    Suite 100
    San Diego, CA 92121-3290

Your return will be processed, and you will receive your refund in four to six weeks.

While I think complaining about the program may do a little bit of good, I'd think that returning it for a refund along with the reason why would do a lot more good. (Of course after you used it and printed your taxes.)

I wonder if Intuit will take longer than 60 days to process my refund (then they will have paid me $20 to use their software).

My boss gets lots of complaints because we pass the 3% credit card charge on directly. Like somehow people who pay with cash or check should subsidize the credit industry.

Most (if not all) credit card companies have policies against charging extra for credit card transactions.
    http://usa.visa.com/personal/about_visa/contact_us .html?it=ss_/index.html#d

    From Visa's web site:

Can merchants set a minimum purchase or charge me a fee for accepting my Visa card?

Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items. They also are not permitted to charge you a fee when you want to use your Visa card.

If you run into a problem like this with a merchant, please notify the financial institution that issued you your Visa card. These institutions have access to the appropriate Visa rules and regulations and can help you document and file your complaint. You'll find their address and/or telephone number on your Visa statement. Their telephone number may also appear on the back of the card itself.

Back before the Web when I was a hardware designer, books were a kind of currency that engineering salespeople used to entice you to meet with them. Each chip manufacturer printed stacks and stacks of data books covering their various product lines. They'd give these to the sales reps who would cart them in on dollies to hand out to the engineers who showed up to hear their latest pitch.

When I was an engineering student and had to make a microprocessor based design, the only company that showed up with data books for our class was Motorola. As you would expect, most of our class used a Motorola 68000 in our designs. Only one design used an Intel chip.

I guess Motorola needed the business and Intel figured they didn't.

Why go through all the effort (measuring, color matching, painting and so on) in creating an exact duplicate of a "I-5" sign?

There are plenty of "I-5" signs along the side of the highway. They have them every few miles.

Why not just swipe one of those? It's not like someone would miss it and if they did, they would just replace it.

After "borrowing" a real sign, he could install that one in a more useful location.

He could have done this whole operation in an afternoon and been done with it.

Or you could just order a reciever from X10 for $49. Maybe he was buying the 6 camera pack with eagle eye motion sensors and the auto vcr kit for the $250.

If you order from X10, what ever you do, make sure you give them a disposable e-mail address because they will send you so much spam, you will long for the days when all you received was viagra and porn e-mails.
