Those values are things such as liberty and justice.
You forgot to mention that liberty and justice come with the standard suspected terrorist excemption clause which also includes anyone who happens not to be white.
You also forgot to mention the other values that the stars and stripes stands for, namely greed, paranoia and blind patriotism.
Freedom of speach is overrated. I am not allowed to say, for example, that I believe that it is the duty of every true Englishman to go out and kill one niger per day. I would be arrested for inciting racial hatred, and rightly so.
If freedom of speach means that people have the right to preach hatred and violence, then I for one am against it.
The other thing they do is rely heavily on synthetic benchmarks like PCMark. A little while ago the inquirer ran a story that pointed out that a heavily overclocked p4 running at over 4 GHz got impossible low scores on some synthetic benchmarks. This turned out to be because the windows internal clockspeed counter was just 32bits and there was an integer wraparound. What they failed to notice was that this meant that these so called benchmarks were baseing their scores on the reported clockspeed of the processor, and therefore must have favoured intel.
That is the worst argument I've ever heard. One or two celebrated cases does nothing to change the balance. I don't know the figures, but I would not be the least bit surprised if 90% of crime was carried out by the poorest 25%. Higher if you limit it to violent or drug related crime.
If you have a free moment go to the nearest prison and do a head count of the number of inmates that have a college degree. I can guarantee would won't need a degree in math to count them.
Did you know that the average income of a black american is 61% less than the average white american? That is the same difference as there was in 1880!! We know that the prision population is overwhelmingly black, but that's not really surprising when you consider the differences in wealth and education.
Actually the VAST majority of crime is commited by poor people, so the best way to solve crime is to send all the poor people to a poor country and then they'll be relatively rich. Of course that would mean that there would be no-one to clean the streets or serve you in McDonalds, but there'd be no crime, because everyone would have starved to death.
Alternatively, if everyone had enough to eat, somewhere to live and enough money to live a resonably comfortable life there'd be no crime either, but then, if you're not pissing on someone its unamerican right?
the bad thing about open source is that every former windows user who has installed debian from a knoppix cd will never get a little pop-up to ask them if they want to download and run a patch to protect them.
Why the hell should red hat, IBM, SuSE etc make money from selling software (OK support) but the people who actually produced it get nothing?
Don't you feel guilty for making money modifying software where the original author probably got nothing? I know I would.
Should books be free? Should music be free? art? I would say no to all the above because people should be able to make a living from whatever skills they posess. So why should software be free?
Microsoft talks about the cost of developing Longhorn being more than the cost of putting Neil Armstrong on the moon. How could they justify that cost if they had to accept that they would only sell one copy and all the rest would be distributed free, or worse, support was provided by Apple?
If the money is made from support then what is the motivation to provide easy to use, bug free software?
Free software is like a pyramid selling scam. It works while there are people outside who support those inside, but once all software is free the pyramid will collapse, and the only people making money will be those at the top.
If we were talking about rugs, coffee, chocolate, or tea, or one of a number of products which are produced by people who are either slaves or paid a pittence there would be uproar. But somehow the free software movement has pursuaded people to work for nothing and in doing so has decimated the market for programmers who actually want to get paid for their time.
While I agree that code snippets, small general purpose classes etc can and perhaps should be freely available, the demand that large portions of any code can be lifted verbatum seems unreasonable. When I've worked on one off projects before we have supplied the product in source code format in addition to binaries. After all the customer paid for them. They can pay for modification but they can not distribute the source code or software free or otherwise.
Did you read the licence file? It grants you "a fully paid, royalty-free, non-exclusive, worldwide license under Microsoft's Necessary Claims to make, use, sell, offer to sell, import, and otherwise distribute Licensed Implementations"
that is, it's free, so long as you grant a reciprocal licence to microsoft for your implementation.
millions of itaniums? I think not. Intel has sold less than 200,000 itanium chips since its launch a few years ago and many of them have been freebies or subsidised for 3rd party software developers.
This is not the first time that A. Russell Jones has made controversial claims about Linux on DevX. At the end of august last year this story was run here on/. where he claimed that there should be a standard desktop for Linux.
There was an article in new scientist magazine about this guy a few months ago. He was saying then that was selling the small gemstone like diamonds from his machines at a high price so that he could buy more machines and increase his capacity, and also creating larger machines for making semiconductor quality diamond. He also said then that the yellow diamonds were the easiest and quickest for him to make and got a better ROI than making white or blue diamonds.
Well Firefox for windows is just under 6.2Mb, and installs with no reboot in just a few seconds. I'd say that's within most people ability to download.
We cheat at ID'ing cheaters. Every game is recorded on the server so the replay can be reviewed as many times as required to say for sure. Then we just pull the IP from the log and ban it, and post the replay so people can review it for themselves.
All this has lead to Wolfgrowls being one of the most respected servers for Ghost Recon on the net, and one where cheating will not be tolerated.
Ghost recon is great. I play it way too much, bu I have to disagree with you about playing in n00b rooms. Go and play with the big boys, and when you are out watch through the eyes of the really good players.
Get teamspeak. At Wolfgrowls.com we always like to have people, even guests and visitors, on teamspeak and it doesn't matter how bad you are because we are just there to have fun.
But I was running firebird 0.7, ran the nice new MSI installer and it kept the old 0.7 settings including all my bookmarks and layout customisation, and even copied over one of my browser extensions. I was very happy.
On the other hand I can't download the ever useful open in IE for those, oh so rare, broken sites that don't work properly in firefox, because the new extension site is down.
Clearly you don't know what deterministic means. Deterministic means that if you knew all the factors which could possible affect the operation of a computer then the result would be predictable. Just having random input doesn't make the system non-deterministic. Of course, having random input makes programming for all eventualities difficult, but the fundamental rule of programming is that all problems are solvable.

Maybe we didn't invent the internet, but Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web, so maybe thats not for you Americans.

There's only one Zathrus I know, and he's always drunk.

troll? Troll??! It's funny goddamn it.

supercomputing department huh?
Anyway, look on the bright side. It's all good publicity.
FYI google bombing is normally the act of a large group of people linking to a site to make it the number 1 search for a particular phrase.
For example "Weapons of mass destruction", "tallentless hack", "miserable failure"
The question is, what happens when google links to /. on its front page? Will /. go down under the torrent?
I don't know about a trademark, but perhaps /. could patent it as a business method?
Howard Stern as Zaphod!!!! Yes!!!
Mod parent up!!! Please!!! I know it's an ac but it's FUNNY gaddamnit
That reminds me of a joke from when BSE was the "Big Thing" here in the UK.
Cow 1: Hey, what do you think about this mad cow disease?
Cow 2: It doesn't bother me, I'm a helocopter!!
