I admit, I am a star wars freak bigger than Jabba the Hutt, and grooming my 3 year old son to be my sith apprentice, but Lucas can't write dialogue for shit, and his directing leaves something to be desired.

Empire could be my all-time favorite movie, but the two prequels so far have been lacking in compelling story (excellent effects, great baddies [Maul needed at least one line in the fight scene], cool ships and weapons, etc.), because he didn't show us what was happening, he used awfully written, awfully acted lines to show huge plot points.

Believe me, my son has made me watch EpI at least 150 times, and EpII at least 50 times. I have created a brand new eager customer for Darth George to spew more of his logo emblazened widgets and trinkets on....

So I should limit myself to design in the areas that are supported by all of those browsers only? Or should I design using the latest standards, and screw users of older software?

That leaves me with bold, color, line-through, left and right text align, and text indent; while not one of the positioning style directives work in all browsers, so I am still going to have to use tables for layout.

I don't know how many users you talk through procedures on the phone, but "scroll-bar" is not in their vocabulary. I'd say that fully half of those casual mom-and-pop run-of-the-mill NON-geek (and some self-proclaimed geek) users on the internet miss half of every web-page they visit because they don't know that scroll-bars exist in web-browsers.

How many times have you upgraded your browser? Did you know that most users don't even know that there is such a thing as a browser? Let alone that you could upgrade it.

I didn't say that it was impossible, I said that it wasn't easy...

I believe that if you bug them enough they will give you access to the source, but it isn't Free as in speech.

Developing class content for online presentation seems to me to be the stickier problem. To do it well, you either have to have been trained to be able to produce with a good tool like dreamweaver or authorware, or have access to a code-monkey to do it for you.

Well, buddy, I can see the whole picture, and it is grim. Teachers and the technology staff that support them are woefully undertrained and underfunded. The plain truth is that there is very little in the way of current training for educators when it comes to technology. In the backwater where I serve as lead web whipping boy, the state instituted (by legislative proclamation) that all (did you read that, all, all as in the coaches and the little old ladies doing Home-Ec) teachers must be proficient in the use of technology by either this year or next...

Except that there is a problem..
The legislature neglected to require a minimum standard of proficiency, and also neglected to fund this requirement (that's right, no new money to train teachers to meet this unknown requirement).
Also, each school district can determine on their own what the requirement is, and only has to supply a one page notification on their level of compliance...

In other words, they paid it lip-service. There are a lot of other areas where they have done a good job on enabling the schools with technology, like connecting every school to the internet, and making sure we have a god-awful number of computers in each school, but on this one, they dropped the ball.

In short, what you are looking for, past powerpoint classes and "How to use frontpage and excel to post grades to the web!", doesn't exist.

This friend of my Mom, he hands me this dog-earred paper-back book with a black cover and a little green sphere man sticking his tongue out at me... the guy, Dennis, tells me "Hey read this, you WILL like it." I was like, "sure, whatever".. I read the first few pages, and I couldn't stop reading.. I can honestly say I have about 4 copies of almost every other DA book, mostly first edition hardcovers. Big deal, everyone does? The thing was, this guy who gave me the book, pretty much the same day said to me that I should go to school more often, and I should really (in his words) "do something with your life." Maybe it was the book, maybe it was DA, maybe it was nothing, but certainly, it tied together and I started to go to school... I saw all of the HGTTG episodes on local PBS here in the states, and they are hilarious... I highly suggest them. They gave me a great cast to play out the rest of the books in my head with.. uh.. anyway.. I like them.. ALOT.

I sometimes get bewildered that people try to equate the star wars movies or storyline with anything resembling great cinema.... George Lucas and Co. are intent on creating.. err.. recreating mythology and plotlines that are universal.. when you hear that word.. universal, you should run.. the stories and character development take a back seat to effects and gimmicks.

Was I the only one who thought that Episode 4 (IV) sucked? At the time, it was amazing effects and a well thought out story, but the acting was sub-par at best, and the directing and cinematography were atrocious... Carrie Fisher (Remember Princess Leia??? - She wrote an Oscar winning film, Postcards from the edge, it got some sort of Oscar) - Her take on Lucas's Directing Skills - his range of direction was from "Faster!" to "More!".

Of course I am a fan, of course I had all the action figures, I was 8 years old. But that doesn't mean it was good... It was a good attempt.

When I hear people talking about the SW movies as a "franchise" or with some sort of reverence, I laugh out loud.. it was trash, and Episode one was trash. My wife bought me the DVD for Episode one, and I can't sit through it again, I either fall asleep because everyone has a stick up their butt and they are saying their lines as if they were reading them from cue-cards, or I get so disgusted with the shitty plot and the contrived gimmicks (R2-D2 owned by Anakin, C3PO built by Anakin? give me an EFFFING break!) and the inconsistancies with the original ethos... If you are going to make up the laws of a made-up universe, don't change them because it fits with the story... Don't even get me started about the Gungans.. Jar-Jar actually wasn't that bad, but can anyone explain to me why the Jedi didn't just go to the city first? what was with the 20 minute ride through the planet core?

Send in the Clowns is going to suck too, but I will buy my ticket like a good fan boy and sit and cheer when he gets the girl, and when the bad guys die, and when he becomes darth vader...
