    There is a difference here. OCR software, at least my OCR software, is better than 99.9% accurate for good text, and better than 95% accurate for really dodgy, faded text. It has to be, or nobody would use it. I have successfully OCRed text faxed from Chile on a fax machine from the middle ages - text that I could not read with my eyes.

    Spammers don't need to get it right every time. Even if the the software can detect the letters in a C/R system 1% of the time, it would rake in the cash.

    Didn't Telus buy Fido just a few years ago?

    Telus bought Clearnet a few years ago. Fido ran into bankruptcy problems a while back and many expected them to be bought out, but they seem to be recovering.

    Yeah okay, I'll concede that it is possible there was a mistake made. But we do not know what happened between the engineers and management on the other 100 or so successful flights. Is this a concern they voice on every flight to cover their asses in case something breaks?

    I would fully support that if it wasn't me that was going to have ot pay for your long term care in the future. You voluntarily excuse yourself from the health insurance / public assistance system, and sure, you do what you like.

    Where do you get that from? You are right that mobile companies are trying to move away from handset subsidies, but that comment is far from accurate.

    Actually, he went to a conference there in late 2002/early 2003. Please, get your facts straight.

    I searched for quite some time before posting, and could find nothing. After another few searches I found this. I stand corrected, but the 2 visits he has made have been to conferences held in Canada, and were not "state visits" to discuss issues one on one with the Prime Minister, and he has never been to our capital. That's a pretty poor effort.

    Invade Canada? He'd have to FIND Canada first. As far as I know he has never crossed the border, after 3 years of being president. Some neighbour...

    Seriously, hasn't anyone noticed that the spam is comming mostly from countries that have a technology infrastruction combined with lots of really poor people (China, India, etc.)?

    Do you think that a bunch of poor people in China are all of a sudden picking up laptops and peddling viagra? It's not the Chinese, it's the same people who have always sent spam. They are just buying their hosting/bandwidth from companies overseas, where regulations are non-existant.

    I personally wouldn't call it "stealing". You pretty much agreed to run Java. Yes, you could be a clueless noob and knot *know* that your browser has it enabled... but, nobody is *making* you run java applets.

    I don't shove it down your pipe... you ask for it.

    OK, come on. Leaving Java enabled is a very poor definition of "asking for it". What percentage of internet users know the difference between Java and JavaScript, and can determine which one if any should be turned off or on? I would say less than 1-2%. Taking advantage of the rest is just not cool.

    Actually, massive lawsuits resulted from SUV rollovers as well, to the extent that manufacturers actually budgeted for them.

    Doctors budget for malpractice too. That doesn't mean they are tring to hurt patients. The SUV manufacturers are budgeting for these lawsuits because in America, in particular, when someone dies or gets hurt, someone "HAS TO PAY". SUVs will rollover when you scream around a corner on dry pavement. They are trucks, have high centers of gravity, and must be driven as such.

    While FOX is definately the worst of the big US media outlets, ABC, CBS, NBC, and I'll throw in CNN, were certainly not the best sources of information. Having a 24 hour a day camera on Baghdad, or ground zero is not information. It's sensationalism. To me, the job of news media is to ask tough questions of the people directly involved, and to call bullsh*t if the answer isn't good enough.

    Having "the features of Office 97 at best" is also how I would describe office 2003.

    Do others think that MS Office has added many new core features since then (and I'm not talking about getting clipart from the web)? My mother has been using MS Word exclusively for 8 hours a day since version 3.0. She knows and uses all of the shortcuts (she does not even use a mouse), and all of the features. I recently upgraded her from 97 to 2002. She has read the manuals, and can't find anything new that she would use.

    But in Canada, being bilingual is normal. French and English speakers are common. And $17-$19 CAD is far above minimum wage.

    Although French-English bilingualism is common in the eastern provinces, it is rare in the west. Less than 7% in BC and Alberta. I would say this percentage is even smaller within the techie demographic.

    I'm wondering how artists can manage to make so much money and at the same time taxpayers of major cities are more than eager to fork over their own money as well as their neighbors to have an art gallery built for art that quite blunty sucks, and then still have no problem paying $10 for a post card in the gift shop once it opens.

    Some athletes get millions of dollars. Some artists get millions of dollars. Probably similar percentages too. Sports stadiums, however, bring in a heck of a lot more money and can double as convention centers and concert venues.

    I won't argue that some pro athletes in the top sports are overpaid, so lets not get into that discussion, but...

    You're calling me a mindless sheep, mearly because I enjoy sports, and dare to discuss a good game with a friend? Who's the primadonna now? Involvement in sport is a fantastic way to improve your overall physical and mental health, and build valuable social skills. Having athletes to mentor, whether it's a pro or the kid up the street, helps to get people involved, and that's a good thing.

    Good luck finding anyone willing to visit each and every strip club and bar in town, write down their addresses, and get paid while you're doing it.

    If only there were some sort of database that listed businesses and their addresses. Maybe we could even get phone numbers in there and put everything in a book ... a yellow book.

    So it's wrong to block the "banner ads" but it seems it's alright to block "popups". Just askin

    I see your point, but I think there is a difference here. In my opinion popups are a blatent hi-jacking of a computer system, by abusing a browser function that should not be there in the first place. Banner ads are part of the composition of the page you are viewing, and the author of the page should have the right to put them there.

    That said, I feel I should have the right to interpret the HTML generated any way I choose. I should be able to view any, some, or all images, as I'm the one who has to download them.

    Name alone goes a very very long way for the large majority of internet users. Do you know how many people still think that Yahoo is still the "Internet Home Page", simply because it was the first page they learned about 5 years ago? Do you think that AOL is the biggest ISP because of value?

    if a logo "needs colour" it wasn't designed well. If you're making a logo for something, first design it in b&w, make sure it look good, then add your colour. That way, the logo will still be effective when photocopied, faxed, or viewed by those with less than perfect colour perception.

    The same reason that a mobile phone needs to contain a built in camera.
