LOL! It's like the scientist version of naming your kid "OrangeJello." I can just see the guy, "We're calling it 'multipartite entanglement!'" And his colleagues going, "Is that a technical term?"
I love it when they come up with these totally original and ambiguous names like "mutlipartite entanglement." Why!? What EVER could that mean? Oh brother...
I think John misses a point. The fact that people aren't moving in droves to OS X is not a failure of the switch campaign. I contend they simply went covert. iPods are making FAR more converts than the switch campaign. People are switching and it's happening at a decent clip, just not in droves. As someone has already said, Apple dropping their OS in favor of Windows would make Apple simply an iPod company. Their computer business would be gone. No one would have a reason to buy it. I think the revenue they're getting from iPods and iTunes is augmenting their computer business and creating a huge opportunity for them. The possibility that someone could dual-boot Windows is also going to provide a catalyst for a niche few to move over too. The bottom line is, why should they? They're making money now. LOTS of money.
I'm not sure what the "army of drones" is. I work for a major communications company. We have one TAM from Microsoft. OTOH, I've had to go directly to MS for help on only 2 critical problems in my entire career (excluding TechNet, where I have searched error messages and such). One was phone support and the other was our TAM. I think only once did I ever get asked, "Did you call Microsoft?" For the record, I've worked for 4 major corporations. I think for most MS companies, the need to have MS support for servers just isn't there. Maybe for small companies, but there are just too many techs out there who can support MS, but I digress. What you're saying is true and underscores my point in that it's all perception, not reality and that, again, cuts the thunder out of these "new, savvy CIO's."
As already pointed out, MS will do very little. This is a myth that people just assume because you "bought" it. The idea is, you buy car and if it does something horribly outside it's designed function you can goto GM, Ford, Chrysler, whoever and they will be held accountable. Therefore, Microsoft will too. It simply is a myth and this presumption is something the MS likes to play with in their FUD. This whole idea that CIO's are "savvy" and "a new breed" is completely garbage if they still believe MS will ever come back and say, "Yeah, our software had a huge coding bug that cost you $12million. Here's a check to cover your loses and a patch to make sure it doesn't happen again." And yet, they like to leave that impression when they say, "If you load Debian, whose accountable?"
Which is odd. On the one hand they like to say you're buying a license to enjoy that copy on the other they're saying you have to repurchase as if it were property. "Look, I keep eating the cake but there's never a bite taken from it!"
Did KDE ever fix their menu editor? This was always my problem with KDE. It just didn't work for almost everything I needed. That and most distro's tendency to do half-assed QA on their KDE builds really hurt KDE. I like KDE, certainly over Gnome, but when companies like Novell leave menuitems that do nothing on the default install it leaves much to be desired.
I see no problem here. Our government has been replaced repeatedly since many of these incidents. I would hardly lump the Patriot Act in there, because I frankly stand behind it. If you can't see the difference between China and the U.S., then go live there. Please.
Actually, they'd probably uphold it. The court can hardly confirm or deny a company's rights outside this country. Congress, however, can. We should have never gotten into bed with China. Everyone wants to lament how "big" they're getting but when you talk about limiting trade, "Oh no! You can't do that!" What is the difference between China and the old U.S.S.R? It was a mistake. Now the cats out and what do we do? The world had it's big chance during Tiananmen Square and let it slip by. Boycotts and sanctions should have flowed like wine back then.
I believe this whole response is orchestrated. These cartoons were originally published in September of '05. Yet, to watch the news you'd think this happened last week and that this is all spontaneous. Someone is able to disseminate propaganda very quickly through the Muslim world.
My take? If RMS dislikes it there must be something: pleasurable, refreshing, useful, or downright RIGHT about it. Outside his loathing for closed source monopolies, most of what he says is left-field....two fields over.
The more I use Linux and OS X the more I wish my whole family were on one of them. The amount of time it takes to cleanse a machine of viruses is just silly these days. I realize people are going to respond about how they've had a Windows system up for 3 years with no viruses and no AV running blah blah blah. Listen, you sistem and mother are simply going to get viruses on their PC. And if you want to keep cleaning them up, keep them on Windows. Linux and OS X simply don't have these issues. I could qualify that with a "Yet" but that's just cliche'. It simply isn't happening on Linux and OS X. Until it does, Windows users have no ammo on this point.
That doesn't stop Slashdot from turning into a diatribe on Bush and God anytime a bug post, political post...okay ANY post is posted these days. That and an ID vs. Evolution battle. So much for technology. First of all if evolution is the final word there's nothing "technological" about it. Same with ID. It just seems that so many evolutionists on Slashdot are so the same way they're liberal: basically they a) want to be with the crowd and b) they afraid someone somewhere is wiretapping their phones or videotaping their every move to find out if they masterbate.
All this.Net talk sounds like the old MCSE days. "Well, rather than tell you what I think I'm worth why don't you have a look at my MCSE. I think that should give you some idea." True story. They didn't get the job and my friend delited in letting them know why.
"Since a lot of people using Mono might be coming from a traditional.NET environment"
Because most of the Linux community considers Mono a waste of resources and cohorting with Satan...
Agreed. We started by calling behavioral problems "diseases." Now we're finding "viruses" that cause obesity. Notice there is not study of what percentage of the population that are obese actually have this virus. If you think people are comfortable chalking this up to poor habits, how much more comfortable are overweight going to be with the claim of being infected with a virus? This kind of assertion is harmful. If you find a virus that has this trait then fine but to sound the alarm that Jo-Jo Twinky Eater is fat for any other reason than the fact he eats 4 burgers and 3 large fries at a time and doesn't exersize then you're giving him an excuse to continue.

This doesn't bode well for that Vodka company that extracts its water from icebergs.
Let's see. IE 7 will be more like Firefox and Vista will be more like OS X and Linux. So much for original thinking.
I can assure you, nothing will come of this. Enjoy the ruling while you can.

Okay, if you modded this a "Troll" you are truly an idiot. You should wear a sign.

Sounds good to me. We need to do this to more companies. Sorry, but especially after Tiananmen Square China holds nothing but contempt from me.

Let's not forget that Africans are STILL enslaving Africans. I wonder how Bush managed that!?

Shouldn't this article have opened with: "Follow Adam Curry's lead..."
