Great, any step which takes us further away from an oil economy can only be a good thing for world stability, the environment and the economy

A couple of ignorant questions here: What percent of our electricity is produced by oil or gas or coal burning plants? Won't the increase in demand for cheap electricity drive up the pollution created by these plants?

if MS was censoring articles on Slate, you would never see mention of PS, who right now is MS's biggest competitor in the gaming console wars.
No one is claiming M$ is censoring Slate, just using it in a sneaky, underhanded marketing ploy. Besides, censorship is generaly done by governments. M$ is not the government. Yet.

  6. Be Careful! on Laser Vision Surgery for Developers? · · Score: 1

I had been considering lasik for awhile after an optometrist had said I was an ideal candidate for the surgery. My wife said no way in hell I should let anyone do that until I consulted with her opthalmologist. When I went to see him, he found a problem with my retina no one had seen before. Instead of having lasik for vision correction, I had laser surgery to prevent retinal detachment.

Lasik is great for some. One brother and a brother-in-law have had it and they both love it, but I've given up on my dream of having perfect 20/20 vision until I can buy new eyeballs.

Of course its necessary, otherwise how would we know our lawmakers are being productive. Heaven knows I would never vote for anyone who failed to at least try to put a new law or two on the books.

Let's say your typical advanced civilization (using radio waves) can last 1000 years before nuking itself into oblivion

That's quite an assumption. Why must we conclude a civilisation has to eventually destroy itself? one civilisation or culture could just as easily merge into another, or just fade away. in anycase, 1000 years seems a little pessimistic.
