Actually I found what I was thinking of, it's not an option of perl it's the perlcc command it it appears to create compilable C code from any perl code I have tried so far.
perlcc -c test.pl (creates test.c)
which I can compile as an executable, of course the source code went from 1K to 750K so this is not exactly efficient. Just for interest I tested the performance of the pre-compiled version of my program vs. a normal interpreted run using Perl and it came out exactly the same.
So maybe the only useful reason for this is security... nobody could casually modify your scripts anyway, good for cgi's perhaps.
Spy satellites are not in geosync, at least not the ones that spy on other countries, they have orbits that are well known but it would be difficult to aim a laser at one.
The other Hubble telescope of course does stay right over the US at all times:)
Yes, have you ever looked at Perl converted to C? (there is a cmd line option in perl to do this... I have forgotten what it is) It is not really possible for the average programmer to understand it, but it is techncially correct C that compiles. Just because you can conver to another language doesn't mean you should.
I post replies to slashdot like this one:) I just surveyed several people in my office and none of them see a problem with the unobtrusive backlight of a phone held in your lap. Anyway, I'm not just chatting away wasting my time and missing the movie, it's usually a problem with a router or server and I am just being notified. I can issue commands to reboot the router remotely and continue watching the movie instead of having to leave.
I'm not holding it up in your face! Depending on the phone the backlighting can be bright I guess, but I don't feel it is very intrusive if I keep it in your lap. I'm sure the exit signs are brighter. If someone checks their indiglo wristwatch are you going to cut off their hand now?!
I respect your right to pour cola on my property... as long as you respect my right to plant my fist in your face after doing so. We can have brawl in the movie... much less of a distruption than a small light.
While I agree that talking on the phone is bad manners during the show, reading and sending short messages is fine provided your phone doesn't beep or ring. How many phones don't have vibrate mode these days? (This goes for WAP as well)
So when they talk about installing signal jammers in the theatre it makes me angry! I enjoy my SMS access during the show, and I'm not bothering anyone! Why must I be punished? I didn't do anything wrong.
So... if your theatre trys to block your signal, complain, and go somewhere else until they remove it!
...the predictive text input would pop up "Windows" everytime you started to write L-i-n-u...
But seriously, the maker of the software could influence the way we communicate by suggesting some words over others, and once everyone is using the software they could insert new words once in a while... how about advertisers paying for their brand name to pop-up in the middle of your sentence!
I almost always buy my CD's and then make legal copies in MP3 format... now if I can't do that I will be forced to download music for free and universal will lose the sale... I guess they want me to save money. Thanks!
Yes, we actually called it "Gun Tape" in the military and it was green not silver/grey.

...and for those who this has arrived too late, furniture rage therapy is available. Step away from the desk.... put down the sledge hammer.

Someone did a few years ago... it's been running ever since and nobody noticed. i just goes to show the quality of their work couldn't get any worse.
